A computational framework for pharmaco-mechanical interactions in arterial walls using parallel monolithic domain decomposition methods

A computational framework is presented to numerically simulate the effects of antihypertensive drugs, in particular calcium channel blockers, on the mechanical response of arterial walls. A stretch-dependent smooth muscle model by Uhlmann and Balzani is modified to describe the interaction of pharmacological drugs and the inhibition of smooth muscle activation. The coupled deformation-diffusion problem is then solved using the finite element software FEDDLib and overlapping Schwarz preconditioners from the Trilinos package FROSch. These preconditioners include highly scalable parallel GDSW (generalized Dryja–Smith–Widlund) and RGDSW (reduced GDSW) preconditioners. simulation results show the expected increase in the lumen diameter of an idealized artery due to the drug-induced reduction of smooth muscle contraction, as well as a decrease in the rate of arterial contraction in the presence of calcium channel blockers. Amorphous multi-element materials offer unprecedented tunability in composition and properties, yet their rational design remains challenging due to the lack of predictive structure-property relationships and the vast configurational space. Traditional modeling struggles to capture the intricate short-range order that dictates their stability and functionality. We here introduce ApolloX, a pioneering predictive framework for amorphous multi-element materials, establishing a new paradigm by integrating physics-informed generative modeling with particle swarm optimization, using chemical short-range order as an explicit constraint. By systematically navigating the disordered energy landscape, ApolloX enables the targeted design of thermodynamically stable amorphous configurations. It accurately predicts atomic-scale arrangements, including composition-driven metal clustering and amorphization trends, which are well-validated by experiments, while also guiding synthesis by leveraging sluggish diffusion to control elemental distribution and disorder. The resulting structural evolution, governed by composition, directly impacts catalytic performance, leading to improved activity and stability with increasing amorphization. This predictive-experimental synergy transforms the discovery of amorphous materials, unlocking new frontiers in catalysis, energy storage, and functional disordered systems. The feature extraction of EEG signals of motor imaging is a very important step in the brain-computer interface system. We usually use the event-related synchronization/desynchronization (ERS/ERD) phenomenon of EEG signals, and use common motor imagination EEG signal's feature extraction processing algorithms, including Common Spatial Pattern (CSP), Power Spectral Density (PSD), Autoregressive model (AR), Discrete Wavelet Transform DWT) method and other methods to extract features of EEG signals. This paper expounds the basic principle of the algorithm, and finally uses the support vector machine (SVM) to classify the left-hand and right-hand motor imagery patterns after processing the four methods. Comparative experiments show that the feature extraction method of multi-feature fusion better represents EEG features, and a better classification effect can be achieved by using SUM classification. This study can meet the requirements of BCI for high recognition rate. © 2020 IEEE.

Universality of Winning Tickets: A Renormalization Group Perspective

Foundational work on the Lottery Ticket Hypothesis has suggested an exciting corollary: winning tickets found in the context of one task can be transferred to similar tasks, possibly even across different architectures. This has generated broad interest, but methods to study this universality are lacking. We make use of renormalization group theory, a powerful tool from theoretical physics, to address this need. We find that iterative magnitude pruning, the principal algorithm used for discovering winning tickets, is a renormalization group scheme, and can be viewed as inducing a flow in parameter space. We demonstrate that ResNet-50 models with transferable winning tickets have flows with common properties, as would be expected from the theory. Similar observations are made for BERT models, with evidence that their flows are near fixed points. Additionally, we leverage our framework to study winning tickets transferred across ResNet architectures, observing that smaller models have flows with more uniform properties than larger models, complicating transfer between them. © 2021, CC BY.

FPGAs have shown great potential in accelerating the execution of a wide variety of workloads, including simulations of physical and electrical systems. However, many users do not possess sufficient expertise in modern digital design techniques to achieve the greatest benefit from FPGA technology and limitations in current commercial tools do not support the simulation of arbitrary models in FPGAs. Toward that end, we present the challenges to implementing Simulink models via high-level synthesis design techniques, the potential benefits of using this approach, and a preliminary tool that demonstrates one key step toward the automated simulation of arbitrary models. Such a tool would enable transparent, automated model translation from a graphical user interface to an FPGA for users without expertise in FPGA-based digital design. © 2019 IEEE.

By sintering porous Si/Ge films, researchers were able to create high-quality germanium (Ge) epilayers on silicon (Si) with low threading dislocation density. The experimental procedure involves dislocation-selective electrochemical etching of Si/Ge films to create porous Ge nanostructures. Moreover, the voids layer then traps dislocations and blocks them from spreading to the Ge thin-film surface. Furthermore, a microstructure-based multiple slip crystal plasticity model is used in conjunction with finite element analysis to simulate a representative volume element of the Ge thin-film produced on Si (001) surface, which closely resembles the experimental technique. The evolution of mobile and immobile dislocation density is calculated, and the findings demonstrate a drop in overall dislocation density within the voids spacing region, as well as a reduction in stresses due to dislocation pinning and subsequent annihilation at the voids free surface. Thus, the numerical simulations predict the termination of threading dislocations propagation at the embedded voids layer which agree with the transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations. Threading dislocation density reduction in Ge epitaxial thin-film will subsequently increase carrier’s mobility and life time in semiconductor’s active layer, thus increasing the device efficiency. Fast Monte Carlo simulation of Dynamic Power Systems under Continuous Random Disturbances

—Continuous-time random disturbances from the renewable generation pose a significant impact on power system dynamic behavior. In evaluating this impact, the disturbances must be considered as continuous-time random processes instead of random variables that do not vary with time to ensure accuracy. Monte Carlo simulation (MCs) is a nonintrusive method to evaluate such impact that can be performed on commercial power system simulation software and is easy for power utilities to use, but is computationally cumbersome. Fast samplings methods such as Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) have been introduced to speed up sampling random variables, but yet cannot be applied to sample continuous disturbances. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a fast MCs method that enables the LHS to speed up sampling continuous disturbances, which is based on the Itô process model of the disturbances and the approximation of the Itô process by functions of independent normal random variables. A case study of the IEEE 39-Bus System shows that the proposed method is 47.6 and 6.7 times faster to converge compared to the traditional MCs in evaluating the expectation and variance of the system dynamic response.
