The Circular Economy Action Plan is the main building block of the European Green Deal, Europe's new agenda for sustainable growth. Businesses need new technologies, new methods and new industrial organization either to create new businesses or to transform their products, processes and business models. They also need new talents to innovate, create businesses and new jobs, and transform society into a more sustainable one. Circular economy has grown significantly in recent years as a topic taught in engineering curricula. The purpose of this paper is to present the design, implementation and evaluation of a summer school program dedicated to the development, transformation and implementation of circular economy systems and new business models in manufacturing. The program was designed in collaboration with three university partners during a European project and relied on contributions from industrial companies, including start-ups and innovative companies. At the end, some lessons are drawn in order to show the main added value based on the evaluation of this summer school and to identify recommendations for the design and implementation of similar summer schools. © 2024 The Author(s).

Millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communication protocols employ extensive antenna arrays to ensure reliable signal reception. However, aligning these narrow beams incurs a significant cost in beam training, which increases proportionally with the number of antennas. While beam prediction methods based on semantics from the RGB images demonstrate initial feasibility, they are still low on accuracy. Motivated by the fact that the recently introduced Segment Anything Model (SAM) can generate very accurate masks, which can be considered semantic information in this domain, this study proposes a beam prediction solution based on the masks of SAM. The SAM can extract more accurate semantic data from visual sources. Then instead of using the RGB images directly, the semantics images have been used to predict the beamforming vector using a lightweight LeNet5 model. The experimental results show that the SAM-based proposed method can perform significantly better than the two state-of-the-art deep learning models. The proposed solution method can achieve near 100% in top-5 beam prediction accuracy in real-world communication scenarios. Copyright 2023 KICS.

The objective of Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attacks is to exploit Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) in combination with the Industrial Internet of Things (I-IoT) by using fast attack methods. Machine learning (ML) techniques have shown potential in identifying APT attacks in autonomous and malware detection systems. However, detecting hidden APT attacks in the I-IoT-enabled CPS domain and achieving real-time accuracy in detection present significant challenges for these techniques. To overcome these issues, a new approach is suggested that is based on the Graph Attention Network (GAN), a multi-dimensional algorithm that captures behavioral features along with the relevant information that other methods do not deliver. This approach utilizes masked self-attentional layers to address the limitations of prior Deep Learning (DL) methods that rely on convolutions. Two datasets, the DAPT2020 malware, and Edge I-IoT datasets are used to evaluate the approach, and it attains the highest detection accuracy of 96.97% and 95.97%, with prediction time of 20.56 seconds and 21.65 seconds, respectively. The GAN approach is compared to conventional ML algorithms, and simulation results demonstrate a significant performance improvement over these algorithms in the I-IoT-enabled CPS realm. © 2013 IEEE.

We study a temporal step size control of explicit Runge-Kutta(RK)methods for com-pressible computational fluid dynamics(CFD),including the Navier-Stokes equations and hyperbolic systems of conservation laws such as the Euler *** demonstrate that error-based approaches are convenient in a wide range of applications and compare them to more classical step size control based on a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy(CFL)*** numerical examples show that the error-based step size control is easy to use,robust,and efficient,e.g.,for(initial)transient periods,complex geometries,nonlinear shock captur-ing approaches,and schemes that use nonlinear entropy *** demonstrate these properties for problems ranging from well-understood academic test cases to industrially relevant large-scale computations with two disjoint code bases,the open source Julia pack-ages *** with *** and the C/Fortran code SSDC based on PETSc.

Floquet engineering of dressed surface plasmon polariton modes in plasmonic waveguides

We present a comprehensive study surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation on planar metallic waveguides under a dressing field. We perform a set of analytical calculations of the periodic time-dependent Schrödinger equation to study the interaction of an intense electromagnetic field with a metallic system. We model the strong light coupling to the metallic system using a nonperturbative procedure. In this paper, we show that, by introducing Floquet theory into the dressed metal, the behavior of the Floquet states are similar to the phase-modulated signals in the communication system. This will reveal a new perspective on the underlying science in an intricate, dressed quantum system. Furthermore, we examine the impurity scattering effects on charge transport in disordered plasmonic metals using the generalized Floquet-Fermi golden rule and provide a novel approach to diminish the losses in plasmonic materials using the dressing field. To gauge the effectiveness of our results, we introduce a figure of merit to compare the performance of plasmonic metals, subjective to a dressing field. The calculated dressed SPP characteristics suggest that high-efficiency SPP propagation can be achieved in practice. Our findings open up new directions for state-of-the-art nanoplasmonic devices.

Generalized model for the charge transport properties of dressed quantum Hall systems

We present a generalized mathematical model for predicting the transport properties of a quantum system exposed to a stationary magnetic field and a high-intensity electromagnetic field. The new formulation, which applies to two-dimensional (2D) dressed quantum Hall systems, is based on Landau quantization theory and the Floquet-Drude conductivity approach. We model our system as a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) that interacts with two external fields. To analyze the strong light coupling with the 2DEG, we employ the Floquet theory as a nonperturbative procedure. Moreover, the Floquet-Fermi golden rule is adopted to explore the impurity scattering effects on charge transport in disordered quantum Hall systems. We derive fully analytical expressions to describe longitudinal components in the conductivity tensor in dressed quantum Hall systems. Subsequently, we demonstrate that the conductivity characteristics of quantum Hall systems can be manipulated using strong external light. Our results align with well-established and experimentally verified theoretical descriptions for undressed systems while providing a more generalized analysis of the conductivity characteristics in quantum Hall systems. Thus our model can be applied to accurately interpret the usage of strong external radiation as a tool in nanoscale quantum devices.

For spacecraft attitude control affected by environmental disturbance, parameter uncertainty and actuator fault, a novel composite active fault-tolerant scheme, combining a strong tracking Cubature Kalman filter (STCKF) with adaptive prescribed performance control (APPC), is investigated in this paper. The proposed STCKF is capable of estimating lumped fault rapidly but accurately, and it is robust to model uncertainty. An adaptive finite-time prescribed performance function (APPF) whose boundaries can be flexibly adjusted in the case of actuator faults is proposed. Then an active fault tolerant controller is designed using nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (NTSMC) in conjunction with APPF. simulation experiments and comparisons show that the proposed strategy exhibits better fault tolerance, lower conservatism and better steady-state performance.

The labour market constitutes a pivotal element of the national economy, exerting a profound influence on the health and stability of the broader economic system. In recent years, the role of media journalism in the dissemination of information has increased significantly, with a notable impact on supply-demand and price fluctuations in the labour market. By analysing the impact of media news, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of, and insight into, the dynamics of the labour market. This study employs a combination of machine learning techniques and a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model (DMP model) to assess the influence of media news on labour market efficiency. The use of machine learning algorithms enables the processing and analysis of substantial quantities of media news data, facilitating the extraction of sentiment and topic changes. The DMP model is employed to simulate the matching process in the labour market and evaluate the impact of news on the efficiency of matching job seekers and job openings. The study demonstrates, through experimental analysis, the disparate impacts of media news on the labour market across different economic cycles, and validates the efficacy and practicality of the model.

Internet of Things(IoT) terminals are characterized by large number, wide distribution, complex hierarchical structure, etc., and are often in complex environments, which are more susceptible to attacks than traditional Internet terminal devices, and their security management faces greater challenges. Because blockchain technology has the advantages of being distributed, decentralized, and not easily tampered with, it is very suitable for solving the current security problems faced by the Internet of Things. In this paper, the research on the security aspects of IoT based on blockchain technology in recent years is sorted out, discussing the application of blockchain technology in the field of IoT security from three aspects of privacy protection, identity authentication, and access control, analyzing the technical characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of different technical solutions, and looking forward to the future development of these fields.

Linking network- and neuron-level correlations by renormalized field theory

It is frequently hypothesized that cortical networks operate close to a critical point. Advantages of criticality include rich dynamics well suited for computation and critical slowing down, which may offer a mechanism for dynamic memory. However, mean-field approximations, while versatile and popular, inherently neglect the fluctuations responsible for such critical dynamics. Thus, a renormalized theory is necessary. We consider the Sompolinsky-Crisanti-Sommers model which displays a well studied chaotic as well as a magnetic transition. Based on the analog of a quantum effective action, we derive self-consistency equations for the first two renormalized Greens functions. Their self-consistent solution reveals a coupling between the population level activity and single neuron heterogeneity. The quantitative theory explains the population autocorrelation function, the single-unit autocorrelation function with its multiple temporal scales, and cross correlations.
