This survey aims to deliver an extensive and well-constructed overview of using machine learning for the problem of detecting anomalies in streaming datasets. The objective is to provide the effectiveness of using Hoeffding Trees as a machine learning algorithm solution for the problem of detecting anomalies in streaming cyber datasets. In this survey we categorize the existing research works of Hoeffding Trees which can be feasible for this type of study into the following: surveying distributed Hoeffding Trees, surveying ensembles of Hoeffding Trees and surveying existing techniques using Hoeffding Trees for anomaly detection. These categories are referred to as compositions within this paper and were selected based on their relation to streaming data and the flexibility of their techniques for use within different domains of streaming data. We discuss the relevance of how combining the techniques of the proposed research works within these compositions can be used to address the anomaly detection problem in streaming cyber datasets. The goal is to show how a combination of techniques from different compositions can solve a prominent problem, anomaly detection.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is increasingly used to study blood flows in patient-specific arteries for understanding certain cardiovascular diseases. The techniques work quite well for relatively simple problems, but need improvements when the problems become harder in the case when (1) the geometry becomes complex (from a few branches to a full pulmonary artery), (2) the model becomes more complex (from fluid-only calculation to coupled fluid-structure interaction calculation), (3) both the fluid and wall models become highly nonlinear, and (4) the computer on which we run the simulation is a supercomputer with tens of thousands of processor cores. To push the limit of CFD in all four fronts, in this paper, we develop and study a highly parallel algorithm for solving a monolithically coupled fluid-structure system for the modeling of the interaction of the blood flow and the arterial wall. As a case study, we consider a patient-specific, full size pulmonary artery obtained from CT (Computed Tomography) images, with an artificially added layer of wall with a fixed thickness. The fluid is modeled with a system of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the wall is modeled by a geometrically nonlinear elasticity equation. As far as we know this is the first time the unsteady blood flow in a full pulmonary artery is simulated without assuming a rigid wall. The proposed numerical algorithm and software scale well beyond 10,000 processor cores on a supercomputer for solving the fluid-structure interaction problem discretized with a stabilized finite element method in space and an implicit scheme in time involving hundreds of millions of unknowns. Sanitation approach toward resource recovery in rural and semi-urban centers: Insight from South South Nigeria

Recent sanitation situations in Nigeria present public health problems, especially in rural and semi-urban centers. Local and national government bodies in the country have defined policies to provide adequate sanitation for the populations under their control as stated in relevant decrees and policies. However, those who work as health providers in Nigeria regard conditions in many parts of the country as unhygienic and unhealthy due to a lack of adequate sanitation and because the sanitation facilities that are in place are often ineffective. Interviews with householders in rural and semi-urban centers showed that more than 72% of the people in rural communities lack access to adequate sanitation and toilet systems, especially in public institutions. While in semi-urban centers about 91% of the residents use septic tanks without treatment facility, the remaining 8% use toilet systems such as community toilets, wet pit latrines, and open defecation. Both rural and semi-urban centers do not use urine-diverting dry toilets or septic tanks with treatment facilities. Given the present sanitation situation, this study proposes a modern toilet system in rural communities that will enhance the recovery of biogas and nutrients as fertilizer for soil amendment through appropriate implementation, use, and maintenance. The results could be useful as a support for decisions on policies and strategies for adequate and improved sanitation facilities in rural and semi-urban centers in South South Nigeria. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Cyber-threat landscape has become highly complex, due to which isolated attempts to understand, detect, and resolve cybersecurity issues are not feasible in making a time constrained decisions. Introduction of cyber-threat information (CTI) sharing has potential to handle this issue to some extent, where knowledge about security incidents is gathered, exchanged across organizations for deriving useful information regarding the threat actors and vulnerabilities. Although, sharing security information could allow organizations to make informed decision, it may not completely eliminate the risks. Therefore, organizations are also inclined toward considering cyber-insurance for transferring risks to the insurers. Also, in networked environment, adversaries may exploit the information sharing to successfully breach the participating organizations. In this paper, we consider these players, i.e. organizations, adversary, and insure, to model a three layer game, where players play sequentially to find out their optimal strategies. Organizations determine their optimal self-defense investment to make while participating in CTI sharing and cyber-insurance. The adversary looks for an optimal attack rate while the insurer targets to maximize its profit by offering suitable coverage level to the organizations. Using backward induction approach, we conduct subgame perfect equilibrium analysis to find optimal strategies for the involved players. We observe that when cyber-insurance is not considered, attacker prefers to increase its rate of attack. This motivates the organizations to consider cyber-insurance option for transferring the risks on their critical assets. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

We consider linearly coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations with gain and loss terms and with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The system models a parity-time (PT)-symmetric coupler composed by a chain of dimers. We study uniform states and site-centered and bond-centered spatially localized solutions and present that each solution has a symmetric and antisymmetric configuration between the arms. The symmetric solutions can become unstable due to bifurcations of asymmetric ones, that are called ghost states, because they exist only when an otherwise real propagation constant is taken to be complex valued. When a parameter is varied, the resulting bifurcation diagrams for the existence of standing localized solutions have a snaking behavior. The critical gain and loss coefficient above which the PT symmetry is broken corresponds to the condition when bifurcation diagrams of symmetric and antisymmetric states merge. Past the symmetry breaking, the system no longer has time-independent states. Nevertheless, equilibrium solutions can be analytically continued by defining a dual equation that leads to ghost states associated with growth or decay, that are also identified and examined here. We show that ghost localized states also exhibit snaking bifurcation diagrams. We analyze the width of the snaking region and provide asymptotic approximations in the limit of strong and weak coupling where good agreement is obtained.

Effect of process parameters on deformation behavior of AA 5052 sheets in stretch flanging process

Aluminum alloys are widely used in manufacturing of aircrafts and in automotive industry. In this paper aluminum alloy 5052 of 0.5 mm thickness was utilized to investigate deformation behavior in stretch flanging process. The effect of process parameters such as initial flange length, punch-die clearance and blank-holding force were investigated using FE simulation and experimentation. The results show that the circumferential strain and radial strain increases with increase in initial flange length and blank-holding force and decreases with increase in punch-die clearance. Experimental investigations were also carried out to validate FE simulation results. A very good agreement was obtained between FE simulation results and experimental in terms of punch load and edge crack location and propagation.

This paper presents YouPower, an open source platform designed to make people more aware of their energy consumption and encourage sustainable consumption with local communities. The platform is designed iteratively in collaboration with users in the Swedish and Italian test sites of the project to improve the design and increase active user participation. The community-oriented design is composed of parts that link energy data to energy actions, provide comparisons at different levels, generate dynamic time-of-use signals, offer energy conservation suggestions, and support social sharing. The goal is to bridge people's attitude-behavior gap in energy consumption and to facilitate the behavior change process towards sustainable energy consumption that is implementable in people's daily life. Preliminary results show that community-oriented energy intervention has the potential to improve user engagement significantly.

The adoption of cloud computing has increased over the years due to its pay-as-you-go model. The other important feature that cloud provides is scalability achieved through virtualization. The dynamic burst of users is served through virtual machines. The cloud data center comprises of pool of commodity hardware systems used to provide computing capacity on request. The use of commodity hardware increases the failure rate. Therefore, the execution of Parallel Discrete Event simulation (PDES) over fragile cloud environment can lead to erroneous simulation results. Moreover, simply replacing faulty VMs is not the possible solution for PDES. In this paper, we exploit the execution of PDES codes over cloud environment and propose a fault resilient framework that dynamically handles the VM failure without restarting the entire simulation. Our benchmarking results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed protocol, compared with the widely used and traditional PDES protocol i.e. Time Warp.

A science department on the campus of the University of Illinois has received numerous national awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The secret to their success? For nearly two decades, they have collaboratively used evidence-based instructional practices (EBIP) in their introductory level courses. Despite these successes and efforts to spread their EBIP, no other departments followed this department's lead. Then, suddenly six years ago, many instructors from other departments began adopting EBIP in their classrooms. This article asks what was the catalyst for this change? Why had previous attempts at institutional change failed? The authors answer these questions by analyzing their efforts to transform the teaching practices in large-enrollment science and engineering introductory courses on their campus.
