In order to understand complex vortical flows in large data sets, we must be able to detect and visualize vortices in an automated fashion. Additionally, an informative vortex visualization should provide more information that just the location of the vortex core. In this paper, we describe a multistage vortex visualization algorithm that attempts to exploit the availability of additional information to convey vortex characteristics such as core position, extent, strength, etc. The results produced by a traditional vortex detection algorithm are enhanced using a set of postprocessing tools. The multistage visualization method can use the results of any field-based vortex detection technique in which the scalar field has an extrema in the vortex core or can use the results of any method which produces a continuous vortex core line. This flexibility allows the user to select a vortex detection algorithm appropriate for the problem at hand. Our method works on unstructured meshes as well as structured grids and avoids the use of the computationally expensive and potentially nonsmooth gradient during core line extraction and characterization. Its ability to discern both weak and strong vortices as well as vortices in close spatial proximity to each other is another advantage which comes from the use of the local extrema method. Further, our method obtains subcell resolution of the vortex core line through the use of function fitting. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by applying it to several test cases. These test cases highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the method. We describe how the algorithm can be improved and draw conclusions based on the results presented herein.

The discrete event systems specification (DEVS) framework is based on systems engineering principles and is used for modeling and simulation in many application domains. This framework supports a number of important features such as component based hierarchical simulation model development, scalability, reusability and distributed simulation. This paper demonstrates the application of the DEVS framework for construction simulation through a simple, but representative real world application. The application focuses on analyzing the work flow between various trade contractors in production home building. The software tool 'DEVSJAVA' is used for modeling and simulation of the construction application. DEVSJAVA is object oriented; it implements the DEVS framework using Java programming language. This paper consists of three main components: an overview of the state-of-the-art in construction simulation methods and tools, an introduction to the DEVS framework, and a detailed construction example to highlight the application of DEVS framework

The goal of this research is to explore the effects of social interactions between individual autonomous vehicles (AVs) in various problem scenarios. We take a look at one way to construct the social relationships and generate data from computersimulations to compare the behaviors of each. A difference can be noticed when synthetic social structures (SSS) are used to control the interactions between neighboring AVs. Our experiments show that SSSs can be used to improve team performance on a problem in which a team of AVs must maneuver through a narrow corridor to reach a goal

Accurate simulation of power electronic converters requires time steps which are too small to be implemented in real-time with conventional processors. This paper describes the use of FPGA hardware for the real-time simulation of power electronic converters. An FPGA computation core implements nodal algorithms to simulate in real time a multiple switch system with a small time step. A dual time step simulation method is also presented and illustrated with a sample three-phase test network. The FPGA computation core simulates a PWM inverter with a 5 mus time step while the non switching part of the system is simulated on a conventional processor operating at 50 mus. The simulated system's dynamic is acceptable and this method yields high precision of the power electronics switching and the modulation scheme

In the paper, a general topology of continuous-time Active-RC filter is presented. The model includes all possible Active-RC filter structures as particular cases and allows us to analyze them using a unified algebraic formalism. This makes it suitable for use in computer-aided analysis and design of Active-RC filters. By its construction, the model takes into account the finite DC gain and the finite bandwidth as well as non-zero output resistance of operational amplifiers. Filters with ideal OPAMPs can be treated as particular cases. Sensitivity and noise analysis of Active-RC filters is also performed in the proposed general setting. The correctness of the model is verified by comparison with SPICE simulation.
