A DEVS-based Endomorphic Agent employs models of the environment and itself to achieve autonomy in various way. In this paper, we present a framework for an agent able to flexibly reprogram itself under changing objectives or constraints such as might be provided in a flexible manufacturing environment. We show how the agent is able to employ its DEVS-models to develop control schemes for given objectives and constraints. The schemes can then be revised as required when a change in the desired objectives or constraints occurrs. The systems model knowledge representation thus gives the agent greater flexibility and autonomy than is possible with purely rective planners or supervisory controllers. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

This paper defines a new approach and investigates a fundamental problem in route planners. This capability is important for robotic vehicles(Martian Rovers, etc.) and for planning off-road military maneuvers. The emphasis throughout this paper will be on the design and analysis and hieiaichical implementation of our route planner. This work was motivated by anticipation of the need to search a grid of a trillion points for optimum routes. This cannot be done simply by scaling upward from the algorithms used to search a grid of 10,000 points. Algorithms sufficient for the small grid are totally inadequate for the large grid. Soon, the challenge will be to compute off-road routes more than 100 km long and with a one or two-meter grid. Previous efforts are reviewed and the data structures, decomposition methods and search algorithms are analyzed and limitations are discussed. A detailed discussion of a hieraichical implementation is provided and the experimental results are analyzed.

Terrain databases contain data of a terrain which may be uniformly or non-uniformly sampled. In the case of non-uniformly sampled terrains, the resulting structure is a TIN (triangulated irregular network). Since a typical terrain database may contain a large number of triangles, it is often difficult to visualize and organize them. We propose the usage of wavelets in terrain databases to construct hierarchical representations of the terrain skin. It is observed that the resulting structure enables easy construction of multiple LODs (level of details) automatically and also has various other uses like polyhedral compression.

This contribution describes a modular concept by which simulation results can be post-run interpreted under different aspects (multifunctional interpretation). The extension of classic simulation models for materials flow systems and manufacturing systems by economic, ecological and environmental aspects as well as the advantages and limits of this approach are discussed in this paper. A gear manufacturing was chosen as an example to demonstrate the application of a multifunctional interpretation.

It is a generally accepted concept that multiple views are needed in object-oriented analysis or domain analysis techniques. Three commonly adopted models for requirements analysis include object model, functional model and dynamic model. This paper introduces and incorporates the concept of relational modeling into the analysis techniques. Relational modeling mainly deals with two tasks: classification of semantic relations and identification of higher-order system causal relations. Classification of semantic relations supports comparison and evaluation of various relations, which in turn can be used to select suitable methods to process the relations. A higher-order relation depicts the relations between different relations as opposed to the relations between objects often discussed in object modeling. A network of higher-order relations reveals the cause-effect dependency relationships and can facilitate understanding and reasoning of application systems. Furthermore, incorporation of relational modeling techniques can support software reuse in an application domain or across domains.

This paper proposes the application of the unbalanced fundamental power as a merit figure to establish a prediction method of the voltage unbalance emission levels produced by the connection of unbalanced loads. The total apparent power, as criterion for optimal compensation, is discussed when it is applied to lends which are sensitive to voltage unbalances such as generators and motors. The analysis of these aspects is made according to recommendations for voltage unbalances.

Estimating the horizontal gradient in heterogeneous, unconfined aquifers: Comparison of three-point schemes

Cole received his Ph.D. from the Department of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame IN 46556) in 1996 and is currently teaching at Walla Walla College Walla Walla Washington. He earned B.S.E. and M.S.C.E. degrees from Walla Walla College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst respectively. His Ph.D. work used computer simulation to determine how uncertainty in aquifer hydraulics affects time-related capture zones for wellhead protection or remediation procedures. Stephen E. Silliman is an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame IN 46556). He earned a B.S.E. from Princeton University in 1979 and received both an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona (1981 and 1986 respectively). Dr. Silliman worked for the U.S. Geological Survey from 1981 to 1982 and joined Notre Dame following completion of his Ph.D. Current research activities revolve around examination of field sampling practices and the determination of how sampling strategies influence the information gained in the field. Over the past 10 years this interest has been focused on flow/transport in heterogeneous media and transport in fractured rock.

At least two approaches may be used to estimate observation points. First, the gradient may he estimated by passing a plane through the measured heads (h-method). Second, if the elevation of the base of the aquifer is known to be spatially constant, an estimate of the gradient may be obtained using the squares of the measured heads (h(2)-method). In the present study. these methods are examined in application to a heterogeneous system, Using Monte Carlo analysis, we demonstrate that the magnitude of the gradient estimated via the h-method involved significant bias, which increased when the distance separating the walls increased. in contrast, bias in the estimated magnitude of the gradient based on the h(2)-method decreased with increasing separation among the wells. Estimation variances for both the magnitude and orientation of the gradient also decreased with separation distance. Tftr: variance in the orientation was observed to remain relatively high, however, even at relatively large separations among the wells (e.g., 10 integral scales). These results an interpreted as implying that the best estimate of the gradient for steady flow in an unconfined aquifer is derived from the h(2)-method with the wells separated by significant distances. These results also demonstrate the uncertainty inherent in estimating the gradient based on limited field data.

In 1979 he became an Associate Professor at Hokkaido University where he was promoted to Professor in 1987. He has been engaged in research on optical and wave electronics. In 1987 he received a Best Paper Award. He is the author ofFundamentals of Finite Element Method of Optics and Waves(Morigkata Publ.)Optical Waveguide Analysis(Asakura Publ.)Optical Waveguide Analysis(McGraw-Hill Book Co.) andOptical Waveguide Theory by the Finite Element Method(KTK Scientific Publishing/Kulwer Academic Publishers). He is also co-author of one book and has written chapters in six other books. He is a member of the Institute of Television Engineers of Japan the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan the Japan Society for Simulation Technology the Japan Society for Computational Methods in Engineering and the Japan Society of Applied Magnetics and Mechanics. He is also an IEEE Senior Member. Graduated in 1991 from me Department of Electronic Engineering Hokkaido University where he received his M.S. degree in 1993. He is currently in the doctoral program. He has been engaged in research on quantum wave phenomena and computer-aided design of optical and quantum effect devices.

To evaluate nonreciprocal mode conversion characteristics in a magnetooptic channel waveguide, a finite element analysis based on the scalar wave approximation is formulated for the first time. A simple iterative calculation method is conceived for solution of the nonlinear eigenvalue equations finally obtained in which the two polarizations are coupled. Specifically, the maximum isolation ratio in the mode-conversion-type magnetooptic rib guide was evaluated and the validity of the method is confirmed by comparison with published experimental results.

With the goal of direct electromagnetic (EM) optimization the authors present results relevant to crosstalk analysis of VLSI interconnects. They employ EM simulators to extract the LC matrices of coupled interconnects to be used in a circuit level simulator. The results are used to validate a set of empirical formulas. The breakthrough concept of space mapping optimization linking EM simulations with empirical formulas is outlined.

This paper presents a discrete event modeling and simulation framework for analyzing the traffic flow. The proposed framework can provide a convenient means for evaluating signal control strategies at the operation level of advanced traffic management systems and for generating the simulation-based forecasting information for advanced traveler information systems. To do this, the authors have employed the system entity structure/model base (SES/MB) framework which integrates the dynamic-based formalism of simulation with the symbolic formalism of AI. Several simulation tests demonstrate the techniques.
