Successful exchange of cooperative awareness messages(CAMs) among vehicles is essential in improving transportation safety for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). This paper presents performance enhancements of C-V2X CAM delivery with i) overlapped virtual cells with orthogonal sub-channel allocations, ii) extended MIB (master info.mation block) with resource usage bitmap, and iii) smart roaming across overlapped virtual cells. In the proposed scheme, virtual cells are configured with 3 ∼ 4 orthogonal sub-channels for up to 400 vehicles. The virtual cell manager (VCM) continuously monitors the usages of resources (sub-channels and sub-frames) for CAM broadcasting by vehicles, configures an extended MIB with resource usage bitmap, and periodically broadcasts the extended MIB with a bitmap. By checking the extended MIB with the resource usage bitmap, each vehicle can easily avoid collisions by selecting unused resource. The smart roaming among overlapped virtual cells guarantees seamless CAM deliveries even in the boundaries of virtual cells. The performance of the proposed scheme has been analyzed with NS-3 simulation, and measured results of CAM delivery rates are more than 99 percent in highly congested metropolitan areas. Free space optical (FSO) comm.nication requires a line of sight (LOS) between the transmitter and receiver. An established FSO link can get misaligned due to various atmospheric effects. We present an alignment system which finds a lost FSO link by fine scanning. The scanning is done using tip/tilt stage at the transmitter, which works on the feedback sent by the receiver via an RF link. The receiver uses lock-in amplifier's output voltage to detect the FSO link. Tests have been done both indoors and outdoors at distances of up to 80 m and 150 m respectively. An FSO link with LOS is purposely misaligned, simulating beam displacement, and then realigned using the alignment system. High-speed 2.5 Gbps data is transmitted and received over the free space, using Wavelength Division Multiplexers (WDMs), to validate the presence of FSO link after re-alignment. © 2023 IEEE.

As the demand for global connectivity increases, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), particularly satellite-based systems, have gained significant attention in comm.nication network standardization. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has been at the forefront of developing standards that incorporate satellite comm.nications into the broader terrestrial network framework. This paper reviews the progression of NTN standardization, focusing on three key stages: (1) the use of satellites as relays or the next generation NodeBs (gNBs), (2) the integration of user plane functions (UPF) within satellites, and (3) the inclusion of control plane network functions (NFs) within satellites. These developments in standardizations reflect a shift from basic relay functions to fully integrated satellite networks. © 2025 IEEE.

VR can be used for creating situated learning environment, so most of research focused on applying VR on teaching and learning. Nevertheless, learning new info.mation technology, including VR, is the educational target in senior high school. To engage the learners in learning info.mation technology is an important educational task. Therefore, this study developed a systematic learning modular for VR technology based on learning by doing strategy, conducted a one-semester learning experiment in a senior high school, and investigated the learners' perception towards VR technology learning. The results revealed that the learners showed high motivation and perception towards VR technology learning. However, some of learning dilemmas should be reduced in the future. © 2023 IEEE.

Seamless exchange of cooperative awareness messages (CAMs) and prompt wide-area propagation of emergency warnings among neighbor vehicles are essential to improve safety of vehicles in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). This paper proposes enhanced C-V2X mode-3 operations with i) efficient multiple overlapped cells with orthogonal RF resource managements, ii) smart handover across overlapped cells to minimize the signaling overhead, and iii) prompt wide-area propagation of emergency warnings across multiple cells with collaborations of eNodeBs(eNBs). In the proposed scheme, scalable overlapped cells are configured with 3 ∼ 4 orthogonal sub-channels for up to 400 vehicles per eNodeB. The eNB continuously monitors the CAM broadcasting by vehicles and assigns resources to the vehicles with balanced RF channel usages to mitigate half-duplex problem. The smart handover across overlapped cells guarantees seamless CAM deliveries even at the boundaries of cells and reduces delay by avoiding the re-registration process of vehicles at boundary of each cell. It also provides prompt propagation of wide-area emergency warnings based on collaborations of eNBs. The operations of the proposed scheme have been implemented and analyzed with NS-3 simulation, and measured results of CAM delivery rates are more than 99.4 percent in highly congested metropolitan areas. Also, the prompt propagation of emergency warnings across multiple cells are provided within 200 msec.

The 5G LAN-type service refers to a service that supports comm.nication between users within a group through the 5G system. It provides functions similar to those of traditional Local Area Networks (LAN) or Virtual Private Networks (VPN), but it gains attention across various services due to the enhanced performance of 5G such as high throughput, low latency, mobility management, and security. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) introduced the 5G LAN-type service in Release 16 and defined the architecture, protocols, and requirements to support the 5G LAN-type service. In this paper, we briefly examine the architecture and components of the 5G network based on the 3GPP standard and introduce the structure and protocols for supporting 5G LAN-type services in a 5G network. © 2024 IEEE.

To support XR services, the 3GPP standards intro-duce a protocol data unit (PDU) set, which is the minimum group of packets needed to carry a video frame, and also define the relative importance of different PDU sets. This allows the network operator to handle network traffic based on the importance of PDU sets. 3GPP standards define two options for PDU set-based traffic handling in the user plane: 1) gNB-based and 2) UPF-based. This paper introduces a basic concept of PDU set and specifies two procedures for PDU set-based traffic handling in the user plane. © 2024 IEEE.

Demographic Variability in Face Image Quality Measures

Face image quality assessment (FIQA) algorithms are being integrated into online identity management applications. These applications allow users to upload a face image as part of their document issuance process, where the image is then run through a quality assessment process to make sure it meets the quality and compliance requirements. Concerns about demographic bias have been raised about biometric systems, given the societal implications this may cause. It is therefore important that demographic variability in FIQA algorithms is assessed such that mitigation measures can be created. In this work, we study the demographic variability of all face image quality measures included in the ISO/IEC 29794-5 international standard across three demographic variables: age, gender, and skin tone. The results are rather promising and show no clear bias toward any specific demographic group for most measures. Only two quality measures are found to have considerable variations in their outcomes for different groups on the skin tone variable. © 2025, CC BY.

Due to the character of low cost and easily to implemented, the cooperative comm.nication is the future tendency. Three fundamental mode, Amplify-and-Forward (AF) mode, Decode-and-Forward (DF) mode and Compress and Forward (CF) mode are employed to the system. In the cooperative system, relays function to transmit the delivered signal to the destination. Each node in the system could play as the source station, the relay and the destination station. Currently, the issue of privacy and security are seriously requested in the comm.nication. There could be the eavesdroppers pre-tend as the relay to steal the message. Hence, the secrecy protection becomes important. In the higher layer, the encryption scheme is applied to protect the message. However, it is difficult for those devices with low computing resources, the example of IoT (Internet of Things). With Shannon Theory, a secure comm.nication could be supported with a positive secrecy rate. Hence, secure cooperative comm.nication could be possible if there exist a positive secrecy rate between the two ends in the transmissions. Base on the secrecy rate analysis, the maximum secrecy rate is the initial step toward a secure comm.nication. In the cooperative system, the delivered signal could be transmitted via relays. Hence, the path from the source to the destination could be a huge combination. With the exhaustive method to find the optimal secrecy rate could be realized. Hence, in this work, the numerical experiment, the AF and DF mode cooperative mode is adopted. © 2023 IEEE.
