Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are an important paradigm of intelligent transportation systems. Cooperative perception (CP) and vehicular edge computing (VEC) enhance CAVs' perception capacity of the region of interest (RoI) while alleviating the pressure of intensive computation on onboard resources. However, existing CP and computation schemes are based on inefficient broadcast communications and still face challenges such as highly dynamic communication link channel conditions caused by vehicle mobility, and limited computing resources in VEC environments. Considering the delay sensitivity of CAVs' perception tasks and the need for enhanced perception, we propose a unicast-based cooperative perception and computation scheme to achieve more efficient resource utilization and perception task execution in VEC scenarios. Our goal is to maximize CP gain and minimize task execution delay by optimizing the decision of each ego CAVs. To solve the sequential decision-making problem of multi-objective optimization, we propose a solution based on improved multi-agent proximal policy optimization deep reinforcement learning, where CAVs agents make adaptive decisions distributed based on partial observations. Simulation results show that compared with the baseline algorithm, our proposed scheme effectively reduces the execution delay of ego CAVs perception tasks and ensures a high perception gain. © 2025 IEEE.

Federated Learning (FL) allows healthcare organizations to train models using diverse datasets while maintaining patient confidentiality collaboratively. While promising, FL faces challenges in optimizing model accuracy and communication efficiency. To address these, we propose an algorithm that combines feature selection with synthetic data generation, specifically targeting medical datasets. Our method eliminates irrelevant local features, identifies globally relevant ones, and uses synthetic data to initialize model parameters, improving convergence. It also employs a zero-trust model, ensuring that data remain on local devices and only learned weights are shared with the central server, enhancing security. The algorithm improves accuracy and computational efficiency, achieving communication efficiency gains of 4 to 14 through backward elimination and threshold variation techniques. Tested on a federated diabetic dataset, the approach demonstrates significant improvements in the performance and trustworthiness of FL systems for medical applications. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

Various distributed learning approaches emerge for enabling ubiquitous intelligence in Internet of Things (IoT) without sacrificing data privacy. To improve communication efficiency in frequent knowledge exchange over resource-constrained IoT, different techniques for client selection have been proposed. However, the intractable scalability issues remain to be addressed in massive IoT, since highly-coupled co-channel interference adds exponential complexity to combinatorial client selection. In this work, we develop a client selection framework highly-scalable to large-scale networks with thousands of devices, which exploits the inherent graph structure derived from knowledge exchange and co-channel interference. Specifically, we first model a client selection problem for jointly optimizing learning performance and system cost under volatile network conditions. The formulated problem is encoded into a node classification problem by a directed graph. Subsequently, a general yet simple solver is designed based on graph neural networks, which selects clients by classifying node status with recursive neighborhood aggregation of node representations. Finally, extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can perform on par with state-of-the-art methods, while scaling to networks whose size is orders of magnitude larger than they can handle.

Wi-SFDAGR: WiFi-Based Cross-Domain Gesture Recognition via Source-Free Domain Adaptation

WiFi Channel State Information (CSI)-based gesture recognition offers unique advantages, including cost-effectiveness and enhanced privacy protection, and has garnered significant attention in recent years. However, existing WiFi-based gesture recognition solutions exhibit poor generalization ability when deployed in new environment, orientation, or location. Although some methods combine labeled source domain and unlabeled target domain to learn domain-independent features, factors such as data privacy protection hinder access to source data during practical environment adaptation. Consequently, we consider realistic scenario where source data is unavailable during adaptation of unlabeled test data, and instead, a trained source domain model is used. In this paper, we propose Wi-SFDAGR, a WiFi-based Source-free Domain Adaptation Gesture Recognition framework. Specifically, we treat cross-domain as an unsupervised clustering problem, aiming to ensure that features within local neighborhoods exhibit similar prediction results while those farther apart display different prediction outcomes in the feature space. We theoretically analyze the effect of enhanced prediction consistency between neighbor points extracted from gestures on generalization error. Furthermore, we employ an attraction-dispersion network to strengthen prediction consistency among closely located features in the feature space while reducing it for distantly located features. To mitigate noise introduced during nearest neighbor sample selection in the feature space (where predictions may not align with the input sample’s prediction), we progressively improve nearby sample feature aggregation by estimating uncertainty to reweight local neighborhood predictions. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on the Widar 3.0 and XRF55 datasets and the results show our proposed framework outperforms most cross-domain methods. © 2014 IEEE.

Deploying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as aerial base stations enhances the coverage and performance of communication networks in Vehicular Edge Computing (VEC) scenarios. However, due to the limited communication range and energy capacity of UAVs, they cannot continuously cover entire areas or sustain long flights. Therefore, achieving full communication coverage of a target area with a minimal number of UAVs and efficient task offloading remains a significant challenge. To address this problem, the UAV-assisted Two-stage Intelligent Collaboration (UTIC) method is proposed in this paper to tackle the joint position optimization and task scheduling issue. Firstly, a UAV-assisted Two-stage Task Scheduling (UTTS) system model is designed to optimize the allocation process. Secondly, an Enhanced Particle Swarm Optimization (E-PSO) algorithm is designed to determine the optimal positions of UAVs, ensuring complete coverage of all mobile vehicles (MVs) with the minimum number of UAVs. Thirdly, Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) method is employed to find the optimal scheduling decisions for MVs, considering energy consumption, delay, and task priorities. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed UTIC method can achieve nearly 20% reduction in UAV deployment and outperform three other classical reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms in terms of reducing system cost. © 2025 IEEE.

network topology planning is an essential multi-phase process to build and jointly optimize the multi-layer network topologies in wide-area networks (WANs). Most existing practices target single-phase/layer planning, and are incapable of satisfying all rigorous topological structure constraints (e.g., dual-homing rings) defined by network standards and operators, especially in large-scale networks. These significantly limit their usability and performance in production networks. We consider a general topology planning problem with typical structure constraints over three essential phases (greenfield, reconfiguration, and site expansion) and topological layers (optical, IP, and routing topologies). We present, T3Planner, a novel practical solver to this problem in production. Specifically, we develop a structure-driven encoder based on graph neural network (GNN) for concise structure encoding, and design a new learning framework with optical-centric layer compression/reconstruction and rule-aided reinforcement learning (RL) for fast convergence and high performance. Extensive experiments on nine real topologies demonstrate that T3Planner scales to large optical networks with hundreds of sites, saves 46.6% cost, and supports $3.12\times $ more demand when compared to related existing approaches.

A Multi-Scale Feature Extraction and Fusion Deep Learning Method for Classification of Wheat Diseases

Wheat is an important source of dietary fiber and protein that is negatively impacted by a number of risks to its growth. The difficulty of identifying and classifying wheat diseases is discussed with an emphasis on wheat loose smut, leaf rust, and crown and root rot. Addressing conditions like crown and root rot, this study introduces an innovative approach that integrates multi-scale feature extraction with advanced image segmentation techniques to enhance classification accuracy. The proposed method uses neural network models Xception, Inception V3, and ResNet 50 to train on a large wheat disease classification dataset 2020 in conjunction with an ensemble of machine vision classifiers, including voting and stacking. The study shows that the suggested methodology has a superior accuracy of 99.75% in the classification of wheat diseases when compared to current state-of-the-art approaches. ANNS: An Intelligent Advanced Non-Convex Non-Smooth Scheme for IRS-Aided Next Generation Mobile Communication networks

Enhancing the communication rate and quality has become the primary goal for the development of next-generation mobile communication networks, and traditional techniques such as MIMO and increasing the transmit power of the base station (BS) have not achieved a leapfrog effect. The emergence of Intelligent Reflective Surfaces (IRS) provides more reliable technical support for providing high-energy and high-rate communications. However, IRS-aided joint optimization with communication rate and quality of service constraints is a non-convex non-smooth optimization problem, and the optimal global solution cannot be obtained due to its computational complexity. In this paper, we propose an intelligent Advanced Non-convex Non-smooth Scheme (ANNS) in IRS-aided Next Generation Mobile Communication networks for making the transmission rate of mission communication and communication quality effective. To ensure that the inequality constraints in the joint optimization problem are not violated and the equation constraints are satisfied, a hybrid deep reinforcement learning and data-experience-driven constraint security layer network is proposed, which maps the constraint violations into the safe feasible domain by mapping the constraint variables into the constraint variables mapping method, and the convergence of the algorithm is theoretically demonstrated. Experimental results show that the proposed ANNS performs superior optimization compared to SAC, DDPG, and A2C for solving non-convex non-smooth problems. The proposed ANNS has the potential to be generalized to other mobile computing applications with non-convex non-smooth characteristics. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Bidirectionally Guided Large Language Models for Consumer-Centric Personalized Recommendation

With the increasing abundance of consumer electronics, consumers are facing the challenge of information overload, making personalized recommendation systems (RSs) crucial for enhancing consumer experience and promoting sales. Recently, LLM-driven RSs have attracted widespread attention. Nevertheless, the application of LLMs in recommendation still encounters challenges: how to effectively integrate user/item content (CT) and collaborative filtering (CF) information;how to effectively process heterogeneous token sequences;and how to efficiently generate recommendations. Therefore, we propose BGLLM4Rec, a bidirectionally guided LLM for recommendation. Specifically, a bidirectionally guided pre-training strategy is proposed to extend user/item ID tokens into the vocabulary of the pre-trained LLM, and leverage both CF LLM and CT LLM to learn their embedding representations. Meanwhile, a heterogeneous-homogeneous (Het-Hom) prompting strategy is proposed to decompose the input sequence into heterogeneous prompt and homogeneous main text parts, performing language modeling solely on the latter to enhance modeling effectiveness and stability. Finally, a recommendation-specific masked prompting fine-tuning strategy is employed to further refine the pre-trained CF LLM, enabling the efficient generation of multiple recommended items without hallucinations. Extensive experiments conducted on three public datasets have demonstrated that BGLLM4Rec exhibits exceptional performance in recommendation tasks. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Natural language processing methods for assessing social determinants of health in the electronic health records: A narrative review

Over the years, social determinants of health have increasingly been discovered to have a significant impact on an extensive range of mental and physical health outcomes. The wide adoption of electronic health records has made it possible for the development of automated techniques to conduct studies on the effects of such factors on health. With the recent advancements in machine learning, it has become the key technology for extracting patient-level social and behavioral factors from electronic health records. However, the current state-of-the-art machine learning techniques used to extract social and behavioral factors have yet to be deciphered and compared. This narrative review aimed at evaluating advancements in machine learning technology used in the literature over the past decade for the extraction of social determinants of health factors from electronic health records data to gain a better understanding of how and when to leverage them. This was conducted by analyzing the social determinants of health categories, evaluating the relationship between these characteristics and patient health outcomes, reviewing documentation practices of the characteristics in electronic health records, summarizing and comparing current machine learning techniques in the field as well as assessing their limitation, and suggesting some future directions of study. Leveraging machine learning can overcome challenges faced with parsing unstructured clinical data, ease the extraction of relevant concepts in medical text, and aid in studying the health risks caused by social behavior. Despite current knowledge of the significant impact of social and behavioral factors on health, they are rarely documented and investigated in healthcare systems.
