Getting access to labelled datasets in certain sensitive application domains can be challenging. Hence, one often resorts to transfer learning to transfer knowledge learned from a source domain with sufficient labelled data to a target domain with limited labelled data. However, most existing transfer learning techniques only focus on one-way transfer which brings no benefit to the source domain. In addition, there is the risk of a covert adversary corrupting a number of domains, which can consequently result in inaccurate prediction or privacy leakage. In this paper we construct a secure and Verifiable collaborative Transfer Learning scheme, VerifyTL, to support two-way transfer learning over potentially untrusted datasets by improving knowledge transfer from a target domain to a source domain. Further, we equip VerifyTL with a cross transfer unit and a weave transfer unit employing SPDZ computation to provide privacy guarantee and verification in the two-domain setting and the multi-domain setting, respectively. Thus, VerifyTL is secure against covert adversary that can compromise up to n − 1 out of n data domains. We analyze the security of VerifyTL and evaluate its performance over two real-world datasets. Combinatorial optimization is anticipated to be one of the primary use cases for quantum computation in the coming years. The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) and Quantum Annealing (QA) can potentially demonstrate significant run-time performance benefits over current state-of-the-art solutions. Inspired by existing methods to characterize classical optimization algorithms, we analyze the solution quality obtained by solving Max-Cut problems using gate-model quantum devices and a quantum annealing device. This is used to guide the development of an advanced benchmarking framework for quantum computers designed to evaluate the trade-off between run-time execution performance and the solution quality for iterative hybrid quantum-classical applications. The framework generates performance profiles through compelling visualizations that show performance progression as a function of time for various problem sizes and illustrates algorithm limitations uncovered by the benchmarking approach. As an illustration, we explore the factors that influence quantum computing system throughput, using results obtained through execution on various quantum simulators and quantum hardware systems. Validation metrics are key for tracking scientific progress and bridging the current chasm between artificial intelligence (AI) research and its translation into practice. However, increasing evidence shows that particularly in image analysis, metrics are often chosen inadequately. While taking into account the individual strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of validation metrics is a critical prerequisite to making educated choices, the relevant knowledge is currently scattered and poorly accessible to individual researchers. Based on a multi-stage Delphi process conducted by a multidisciplinary expert consortium as well as extensive community feedback, the present work provides the first reliable and comprehensive common point of access to information on pitfalls related to validation metrics in image analysis. While focused on biomedical image analysis, the addressed pitfalls generalize across application domains and are categorized according to a newly created, domain-agnostic taxonomy. A Synthetic network Generator for Covert network Analytics

We study social networks and focus on covert (also known as hidden) networks, such as terrorist or criminal networks. Their structures, memberships and activities are illegal. Thus, data about covert networks is often incomplete and partially incorrect, making interpreting structures and activities of such networks challenging. For legal reasons, real data about active covert networks is inaccessible to researchers. To address these challenges, we introduce here a network generator for synthetic networks that are statistically similar to a real network but void of personal information about its members. The generator uses statistical data about a real or imagined covert organization network. It generates randomized instances of the Stochastic Block model of the network groups but preserves this network organizational structure. The direct use of such anonymized networks is for training on them the research and analytical tools for finding structure and dynamics of covert networks. Since these synthetic networks differ in their sets of edges and communities, they can be used as a new source for network analytics. First, they provide alternative interpretations of the data about the original network. The distribution of probabilities for these alternative interpretations enables new network analytics. The analysts can ﬁnd community structures which are frequent, therefore stable under perturbations. They may also analyze how the stability changes with the strength of perturbation. For covert networks, the analysts can quantify statistically expected outcomes of interdiction. Patient-Generated Data Analytics of Health Behaviors of People Living with Type 2 Diabetes: Scoping Review

Background: Complications due to type 2 diabetes (T2D) can be mitigated through proper self-management that can positively change health behaviors. Technological tools are available to help people living with, or at risk of developing, T2D to manage their condition, and such tools provide a large repository of patient-generated health data (PGHD). Analytics can provide insights into the health behaviors of people living with T2D. Objective: The aim of this review is to investigate what can be learned about the health behaviors of those living with, or at risk of developing, T2D through analytics from PGHD. Methods: A scoping review using the Arksey and O’Malley framework was conducted in which a comprehensive search of the literature was conducted by 2 reviewers. In all, 3 electronic databases (PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library) were searched using keywords associated with diabetes, behaviors, and analytics. Several rounds of screening using predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria were conducted, after which studies were selected. Critical examination took place through a descriptive-analytical narrative method, and data extracted from the studies were classified into thematic categories. These categories reflect the findings of this study as per our objective. Results: We identified 43 studies that met the inclusion criteria for this review. Although 70% (30/43) of the studies examined PGHD independently, 30% (13/43) combined PGHD with other data sources. Most of these studies used machine learning algorithms to perform their analysis. The themes identified through this review include predicting diabetes or obesity, deriving factors that contribute to diabetes or obesity, obtaining insights from social media or web-based forums, predicting glycemia, improving adherence and outcomes, analyzing sedentary behaviors, deriving behavior patterns, discovering clinical correlations from behaviors, and developing design principles. Left ventricle contouring in cardiac images based on deep reinforcement learning

Assessment of the left ventricle segmentation in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is of crucial importance for cardiac disease diagnosis. However, conventional manual segmentation is a tedious task that requires excessive human effort, which makes automated segmentation highly desirable in practice to facilitate the process of clinical diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel reinforcement-learning-based framework for left ventricle contouring, which mimics how a cardiologist outlines the left ventricle in a cardiac image. Since such a contour drawing process is simply moving a paintbrush along a specific trajectory, it is thus analogized to a path finding problem. Following the algorithm of proximal policy optimization (PPO), we train a policy network, which makes a stochastic decision on the agent’s movement according to its local observation such that the generated trajectory matches the true contour of the left ventricle as much as possible. Moreover, we design a deep learning model with a customized loss function to generate the agent’s landing spot (or coordinate of its initial position on a cardiac image). The experiment results show that the coordinate of the generated landing spot is sufficiently close to the true contour and the proposed reinforcement-learning-based approach outperforms the existing U-net model even with limited training set. © 2021, CC BY.

Background: Diarrhoeal diseases claim more than 1 million lives annually and are a leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years. Comprehensive global estimates of the diarrhoeal disease burden for specific age groups of children younger than 5 years are scarce, and the burden in children older than 5 years and in adults is also understudied. We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to assess the burden of, and trends in, diarrhoeal diseases overall and attributable to 13 pathogens, as well as the contributions of associated risk factors, in children and adults in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. Methods: We used the Cause of Death Ensemble modelling strategy to analyse vital registration data, verbal autopsy data, mortality surveillance data, and minimally invasive tissue sampling data. We used DisMod-MR (version 2.1), a Bayesian meta-regression tool, to analyse incidence and prevalence data identified via systematic reviews, population-based surveys, and claims and inpatient data. We calculated diarrhoeal disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) as the sum of years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs) for each location, year, and age–sex group. For aetiology estimation, we used a counterfactual approach to quantify population-attributable fractions (PAFs). Additionally, we estimated the diarrhoeal disease burden attributable to the independent effects of risk factors using the comparative risk assessment framework. Findings: In 2021, diarrhoeal diseases caused an estimated 1·17 million (95% uncertainty interval 0·793–1·62) deaths globally, representing a 60·3% (50·6–69·0) decrease since 1990 (2·93 million [2·31–3·73] deaths). The most pronounced decline was in children younger than 5 years, with a 79·2% (72·4–84·6) decrease in diarrhoeal deaths. Background: Despite major advances in artificial intelligence (AI) research for healthcare, the deployment and adoption of AI technologies remain limited in clinical practice. In recent years, concerns have been raised about the clinical, technical, ethical and legal risks associated with healthcare AI. To increase adoption in the real world, it is essential that AI technologies are trusted and accepted by patients, clinicians, health organisations and authorities. This paper describes the FUTURE-AI framework as the first international consensus guideline for trustworthy AI in healthcare. Methods: The FUTURE-AI consortium was founded in 2021 and now comprises 117 interdisciplinary experts from 50 countries representing all continents, including AI scientists, clinical researchers, biomedical ethicists, and social scientists. Over a two-year period, the consortium established guiding principles and best practices for trustworthy and deployable AI through an iterative process comprising an in-depth literature review, a modified Delphi survey, and online consensus meetings. Findings: The FUTURE-AI framework was established based on six guiding principles for trustworthy AI in healthcare, i.e. Fairness, Universality, Traceability, Usability, Robustness and Explainability. Through consensus, a set of 30 best practices were defined, addressing technical, clinical, socio-ethical and legal dimensions of trustworthy AI. The recommendations cover the entire lifecycle of healthcare AI, from design, development and validation to regulation, deployment, and monitoring. Interpretation: FUTURE-AI is a structured, risk-informed framework which provides guidance for constructing healthcare AI tools that will be trusted, deployed and adopted in real-world clinical practice. Researchers are encouraged to take the recommendations into account in proof-of-concept stages to facilitate future translation towards clinical practice of healthcare AI. Country distancing increase reveals the effectiveness of travel restrictions in stopping COVID-19 transmission

Non-pharmaceutical interventions are the current central strategy to stop transmitting the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) globally. Despite remarkably successful approaches in predicting the ongoing pandemic’s spatiotemporal patterns, we lack an intrinsic understanding of the travel restrictions’ efficiency and effectiveness. We fill this gap by examining the countries’ closeness based on disease spread using country distancing that is analogical to the effective resistance in series and parallel circuits and captures the propagation backbone tree from the outbreak locations globally. Our method estimates that 53.6% of travel restrictions as of June 1, 2020, are ineffective. Our analytical results unveil that the optimal and coordinated travel restrictions postpone per geographical area by 22.56 [95% credible interval (CI), 18.57 to 26.59] days of the disease’s arrival time and protect the world by reducing 1,872,295 (95% CI, 216,029 to 23,606,312) infected cases till June 1, 2020, which are significantly better than the existing travel restrictions achieving 12.87 (95% CI, 10.59 to 15.17) days of arrival time delay and 861,867 (95% CI, 238,250 to 3,879,638) infected cases reduction. Federated learning has become prevalent in medical diagnosis due to its effectiveness in training a federated model among multiple health institutions (i.e., Data Islands (DIs)). However, increasingly massive DI-level poisoning attacks have shed light on a vulnerability in federated learning, which inject poisoned data into certain DIs to corrupt the availability of the federated model. Previous works on federated learning have been inadequate in ensuring the privacy of DIs and the availability of the final federated model. In this paper, we design a secure federated learning mechanism with multiple keys to prevent DI-level poisoning attacks for medical diagnosis, called SFPA. Concretely, SFPA provides privacy-preserving random forest-based federated learning by using the multi-key secure computation, which guarantees the confidentiality of DI-related information. Meanwhile, a secure defense strategy over encrypted locally-submitted models is proposed to defense DI-level poisoning attacks. Finally, our formal security analysis and empirical tests on a public cloud platform demonstrate the security and efficiency of SFPA as well as its capability of resisting DI-level poisoning attacks.
