The following model of network function computation in directed acyclic networks is considered: A sink node desires to compute correctly a target function with all possible inputs of the function generated at multiple source nodes. The network links have limited capacity and are error-free. The intermediate network nodes perform network coding without any computation bound. The computing rate is measured by the average number of times that the target function can be computed for one use of the network. Guang, Yang and Li recently proposed a general upper bound on the computing capacity that is tight for all the instances of the problem with known computing capacity in literature. In this paper, we show that their upper bound is not tight in general by explicitly characterizing the computing capacity of an example. Our technique can be extended to characterize upper bounds on the computing capacity of a general instance of the network function computing problem.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have gained tremendous popularity in the last few years. Thanks to MOOCs, millions of learners from all over the world have taken thousands of high-quality courses for free. Artificial intelligence (AI) has played an important role in making MOOCs what they are today. By exploiting the vast amount of data generated by learners engaging in MOOCs, AI techniques have been proposed to improve our understanding of MOOC participants and enable MOOC practitioners to deliver better courses. These approaches have also greatly improved student experience and learning outcomes through constructing intelligent and personalized learning trajectories. In this paper, we first review the state-of-the-art AI research making an impact on MOOCs education, emphasizing on works which aim to enhance our understanding of student learning behaviours, improve student engagement, and improve learning outcomes. We then offer an overview of important future research to carry out in sub-fields of AI to enable MOOCs to reach their full potential.

Reconstructing network connectivity from the collective dynamics of a system typically requires access to its complete continuous-time evolution, although these are often experimentally inaccessible. Here we propose a theory for revealing physical connectivity of networked systems only from the event time series their intrinsic collective dynamics generate. Representing the patterns of event timings in an event space spanned by interevent and cross-event intervals, we reveal which other units directly influence the interevent times of any given unit. For illustration, we linearize an event-space mapping constructed from the spiking patterns in model neural circuits to reveal the presence or absence of synapses between any pair of neurons, as well as whether the coupling acts in an inhibiting or activating (excitatory) manner. The proposed model-independent reconstruction theory is scalable to larger networks and may thus play an important role in the reconstruction of networks from biology to social science and engineering.

Increased deployment of wind generation, with the characteristics of randomness and intermittent, has adverse effects on inter-connected power system frequency stability. By considering wind power deviation, this paper improves the area control error (ACE) model to address the frequency fluctuation caused by wind disturbances. Specifically, new control variables are introduced into the ACE model, therefore to provide much more informative inputs for the automatic generation control (AGC) system. Based on this ACE model, two intelligent control methods are proposed and compared. The first method is fuzzy logic based PI controller, in which the parameters are updated according to the range of frequency offset. The other method is fuzzy logic based goal representation heuristic dynamic programming (Fuzzy-GrHDP), in which adaptive supplementary control signals are generated in an online manner. Simulation study is carried out on a two-area benchmark system with wind power penetration. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods for frequency oscillation damping under different system operating conditions.

In this paper, we develop a novel angle-domain adaptive filtering (ADAF)-based frequency synchronization method for the uplink of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiuser network, which is applicable for users with either separate or overlapped angle-of-arrival (AoA) regions. For each user, we first introduce the angle-constraining matrix (ACM), which consists of a set of selected match-filter (MF) beamformers pointing to the AoAs of the interested user. Then, the adaptive beamformer can be acquired by appropriately designing the ADAF vectors. Such beamformer can achieve two-stage adaptive multiuser interference (MUI) suppression, i.e., inherently suppressing the MUI from non-overlapping users by ACM in the first stage and substantially mitigating the MUI from adjacent overlapping users by ADAF vector in the second stage. For both separate and mutually overlapping users, the carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation and subsequent data detection can be performed independently for each user, which significantly reduces computational complexity. Moreover, ADAF is rather robust to imperfect AoA knowledge and side cluster of scatterers, making itself promising for multiuser uplink transmission. We also analyze the performance of CFO estimation and obtain an approximated closed-form expression of mean-squared error (MSE). Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. In this paper, coordinated sliding mode control (SMC) and adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) strategy is proposed for near-space aerospace vehicle (NSASV) adaptive attitude tracking control. In this design, the NSASV attitude angle control is implemented as classical cascade control scheme with two control loops in the model. The outer one is a slow control loop for the attitude angle tracking, and the inner one is a fast control loop for the attitude angular rate tracking. Both of these two control loops are designed by using SMC, which can provide exact control performance near the operating point. To improve the control performance and robustness under parameter variations and external disturbances, ADP based supplementary control is introduced and incorporated into the inner fast control loop to provide adaptive compensation for the reference signal. Simulation study is carried out in Matlab/Simulink environment, and the results demonstrate that the proposed cooperative control could provide quite satisfied tracking performance in terms of overshoot and oscillation.

Persistent slip band （PSB） is an important and typical microstructure generated during fatigue crack initiation. Intensive work has been done to investigate the mechanisms of the formation of persistent slip bands since the 1950s when Wadsworth[1] observed the fatigue fracture in copper. Simulations have indicated that PSBs formation during fatigue crack initiation is related to the dislocation driving force and interaction. In this paper, a molecular dynamics （MD） simulation associated with embedded atom model （EAM） is applied to the PSBs formation in nickel-base superalloys with different microstructure and temperature under tensile- tensile loadings. Five MD models with different microstructure （pure 5/ phase and γ/γ＇ phase）, grain orientation （[1 0 0][0 1 0][0 0 1] and [1 1 1][1 0 1][1 2 1]） and simulation temperature （300 K, 600 K, 900 K） were built up in these simulations. Our results indicated that within the γ phase by massive dislocations, pile-up and propagation which can penetrate the grain. Also, it is found that the temperature will affect the material fatigue performance and blur PSBs appearance. The simulation results are in strong agreement with published experimental test result. This simulation is based on the work[2]. The highlights of the article include： 1） investigation of the PSB formation via molecular dynamics simulation with three different parameters, 2） conduct of a new deformation and velocity combination controlled simulation for the PSB formation, 3） high-performance computing of PSB formation, and 4） systematic analysis of the PSB formation at the atomic scale in which the dislocation plays a critical role.

Non-orthogonal multiple access schemes with higher spectral efficiency and the capability of accessing more users than orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme is preferred for the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks. In this work, a non-orthogonal transmission scheme called pattern division multiple access (PDMA) is proposed for the 5G wireless communication systems. Two pattern matrices are proposed for 150% and 200% overloaded PDMA systems. Then, a low complexity symbol-wise belief propagation iterative detection and decoding (BPIDD) algorithm for multiple user detection is proposed. Numerical results and analysis provided by utilizing extrinsic information transfer chart show that the proposed scheme outperforms the traditional OMA systems significantly, and the performance of the proposed scheme is better than that of the existing schemes up to 1 dB. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed scheme is superior to the existing schemes and the proposed BPIDD algorithm is better than that of the BP algorithm over 0.5 dB.
