Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. An efficient HCCA scheduler for video streaming with QoS support

The 802.11e Task Group has established to enhance Quality of Service (QoS) provision for time-bounded services in the current IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. The QoS is introduced throughout Hybrid Coordination Function Controlled Channel Access (HCCA) for the rigorous QoS provision. In HCCA, the station is allocated a fixed Transmission Opportunity (TXOP) based on its TSPEC parameters so that it is efficient for Constant Bit Rate streams. However, as the profile of Variable Bit Rate (VBR) traffics is inconstant, they are liable to experience a higher delay especially in bursty traffic case. In this paper, we propose an integrated solution called Adaptive Feedback-based HCCA (AF-HCCA) for supporting video stream that shows the variability on both packet size and generation interval. The AF-HCCA improves both polling and TXOP assignment mechanisms which efficiently schedules the TS based on their actual need. Simulation experiments have been conducted to show that the proposed scheduler not only enhances the packet delay, but also improves the channel utilization by mitigating the over-pollling issue.

In this paper, a novel framework for dynamic event monitoring in smart grid with synchrophasor data is proposed. The fundamental principle is that the nonstationary signatures of any dynamic event in the system will be captured by the data set collected from the phase measurement units (PMUs). The framework is performed in three steps: 1) Energy function components construction by using PMU data. Each of the component in the energy function, such as the load, transmission line, and generation, are formulated explicitly;2) Unsupervised feature learning and fusion by using the energy function components. In the feature learning stage, stacked autoencoders (SAE) is used to learn representative features from each component. Then in the feature fusion stage, a shared representation between modalities is further learned;and 3) Supervised classifier training and online application. Classifier, such as a simple neural network, is trained for monitoring the system dynamics to detect and classify events. Compared with purely data-driven methods, the proposed framework utilizes the physical basis to understand and correlate the features with different events. Meanwhile, because of learning features automatically and adaptively, the proposed method reduces the need of human labor and can be more easy to process big data in smart grid. Simulation is carried out on IEEE 39-bus system, and the results show promising effectiveness on dynamic event detection and classification.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological revolution that represents the future of connectivity and reachability. In the IoT, things refer to any object on the face of the Earth, whether it is a communicating device or a noncommunicating "dumb" object. From a smart device to a leaf of a tree or a beverage bottle, anything can be part of the Internet. The objects become communicating nodes over the Internet through data communication means, primarily through radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. The IoT includes smart objects as well. Smart objects are digital, physical entities, which perform some tasks for humans and/or the environment. Optical sensing performance of tapered fiber coated with Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) towards lard with different concentrations is investigated. Gold nanoparticle (Au-NPs) is applied to further enhance the sensitivity of the sensor. GQDs and Au-NPs were coated onto a multimode tapered optical fiber by drop-casting technique. The developed sensor was exposed to different concentrations of lard (10% to 100%), the sensor intensity inversely proportionally in the present of Au-NPs. Fluorescence quantum yield of Au-NPs achieved was as high as 20%. © 2017 OSA - The Optical Society. All rights reserved.

Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. In this work, a Storm-based query language System(SQLS) is proposed for real-time data stream analysis. The system is compatible with Continuous query language(CQL) specification. It supports both continuous queries and one-time queries over streaming data, and meets the requirements of user experience(traditional SQL queries) and Qo S(such as real-time and throughput). In order to better meet the requirement of throughput and enhance the processing efficiency, the load shedding algorithm and cache optimization are employed during the implementation of SQL-like operators. Finally, performance testing of the proposed SQLS has been conducted on standalone Storm platform and Storm clusters. Experimental results show that our system can not only meet the needs of users, but also extend the function of real-time streaming queries processing.

BACKGROUND:Copy number variants (CNVs) increase risk for neurodevelopmental conditions. The neurobiological mechanisms linking these high-risk genetic variants to clinical phenotypes are largely unknown. An important question is whether brain abnormalities in individuals carrying CNVs are associated with their degree of penetrance. METHODS:We investigated if increased CNV-penetrance for schizophrenia and other developmental disorders was associated with variations in cortical and subcortical morphology. We pooled T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging and genetic data from 22 cohorts from the ENIGMA-CNV consortium. In the main analyses, we included 9,268 individuals (aged 7 to 90 years, 54% females), from which we identified 398 carriers of 36 neurodevelopmental CNVs at 20 distinct loci. A secondary analysis was performed including additional neuroimaging data from the ENIGMA-22q consortium, including 274 carriers of the 22q11.2 deletion and 291 non-carriers. CNV-penetrance was estimated through penetrance scores that were previously generated from large cohorts of patients and controls. These scores represent the probability risk to develop either schizophrenia or other developmental disorders (including developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder and congenital malformations). RESULTS:For both schizophrenia and developmental disorders, increased penetrance scores were associated with lower surface area in the cerebral cortex and lower intracranial volume. For both conditions, associations between CNV-penetrance scores and cortical surface area were strongest in regions of the occipital lobes, specifically in the cuneus and lingual gyrus. CONCLUSIONS:Our findings link global and regional cortical morphometric features with CNV-penetrance, providing new insights into neurobiological mechanisms of genetic risk for schizophrenia and other developmental disorders.
