Sufficient computing resources available at future generation routers in the access/aggregation networks can be pooled to form a cloud at edge, which we call Access/Aggregation network Cloud (or ANC). An ANC can be used to handle some of the information processing conventionally done inside the enterprise networks. ANC computing can also result in a much less delay and more flexibility than if such information processing is done centrally in a data center in the core. In this paper, we formulate two representative optimization problems related to Flow Inspection Router Assignment (FIRA) in ANCs. Their objectives are to minimize the (weighted) number of flows that still need to be inspected inside the enterprise network when only some flows can be assigned to the ANC due to the additional flow inspection delay in the ANC, and when all the flows can be assigned to the ANC, to minimize the additional flow inspection delay, respectively. We prove the NP-hardness of these two new problems, study their performance bounds and propose efficient heuristics. We further extend the formulation and solution to support multicast flows. Simulation shows that our heuristic algorithms can perform close to their performance bounds, implying their near optimality and the tightness of the bounds. In addition, simulation also demonstrates how inspection computing resources can be reduced for multicast flows. © 2012 IEEE.

Despite its popularity, the conventional Vivaldi antenna has long suffered from some design problems, such as tilted beam, low or inconsistent directivity and gain, complicated design and fabrication methods, and limited size reduction. These setbacks make its progress lag on the fast track of technological demand. Thus, the antenna overall performance is anticipated to improve by incorporating negative index metamaterial (NIM) into the design method, plus, it is also tunable. In this study, the design uses linearly-tapered shape-loading structure, as its projected performance crucially depends on the space in between the antenna arms, a prerequisite to further boost its performance when combined with NIM technology. A unique slitting approach synchronizes the integration between the Vivaldi antenna and NIM where a single layer NIM piece is simply snugged into the slit perpendicular to the middle antenna substrate. The major improvement in the spotlight is the capability of NIM to focus the entire beam so that it can radiate to the targeted direction. The measurement results are similar to the simulations in terms of high gain, where the gain and directivity of the antenna are increased up to 4 dB. The contrast of overall performance between the plain modified Vivaldi antenna and the ones with NIM evidently asserts the expected contribution of snug and boost method applied and attests its significant potentials for a broad range of ultra-wideband applications.

A low-complexity/low-cost Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) resonator coupled to a dielectric waveguide, working in sub-millimeter wave range of frequency, is proposed. The structure is implemented on a Silicon-On-Glass (SOG) technology for the first time. Using different type of experiments, the validity of design and functionality of system are verified. Excitation of four pure WGE modes in the range of 145-205 GHz for two types of resonators, the ring and the disc resonator, are experimentally demonstrated for the first time.

In this paper, we adopt the two quasi-sliding mode control for a class of multivariable discrete time bilinear systems. By applying the proposed control strategies, the system states would move into a boundary layer of the sliding surface and remain in the boundary layer in finite time. Thus, the stability of the overall system could be guaranteed. Finally, the computer simulation is applied to illustrate the control performance of the proposed control strategies.

This paper considers cases where a specific number of nodes in an ad hoc network broadcast video and audio streams over the entire network. For the purpose, we have proposed Load and Battery Charge oriented Flooding (LBF), which reduces degradation in delivery quality, and energy consumption, and prevents nodes from being interrupted due to the complete discharge of their batteries. This paper describes an evaluation of the proposed method through network simulation. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method can prolong network running time without degradation of delivery quality.

Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI) networks are often deployed under challenging and unreliable conditions. One of the issues for the transmission of data packet in these unreliable networks is the routing of packets, because routing paths may behave differently from the time when the route is discovered to the time when a data packet is forwarded. In addition, control packets may get lost and give routers an inconsistent view of the network. While previous research has focused on designing the control-plane of routing protocols to deal with the AMI network conditions, there is comparatively a smaller amount of research on the advantages of new data forwarding mechanisms designed for unreliable networks. This paper introduces a set of data forwarding mechanisms inspired by distributed depth-first search algorithms, and designed for the challenging conditions of large-scale unreliable networks envisioned by smart-grid deployments. These forwarding mechanisms use data packets to detect loops, update routing tables, and perform rerouting of data packets through alternate paths, recovering thus, packets that would have been normally dropped due to failures at the link layer. We perform simulations based on a real field AMI deployment to evaluate the performance of the proposed mechanisms. We also provide the evaluation results for the data forwarding mechanisms that have been implemented in a real AMI network.

Voice-over-IP systems are quite frequently attacked with the intent of service theft. While VoIP security has been intensively researched in the past, devised solutions often demand significant changes to the VoIP systems. In addition, several solutions propose the filtering of telephone calls, but these solutions only have a limited focus on the privacy rights of the call participants. We propose a method for analyzing communication records with the primary purpose to prevent VoIP attacks. Moreover, our approach integrates with little effort into common VoIP usage scenarios. As an example we use the prevention of toll-fraud attacks as a running example. The analysis of the communication records, however, requires investigating personal information in the communication records, e.g., call habits and phone numbers. Consequently we give an overview of major US and EU laws and regulations to elicit privacy requirements. We also demonstrate how these requirements can be implemented using Comercial-Off-The-Shelf VoIP systems. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper describes a method to design a predistorter (PD) for a power amplifier (PA) with a memory effect by using nonlinear parameters extracted from measured intermodulation distortion (IMD) for a GaN-FET amplifier. To improve the computational efficiency, the updating of a cancellation signal is provided by an iterative algorithm. It is confirmed that the proposed algorithm attains computational intensity lower than half of a memory polynomial. A computer simulation has clarified that the PD improves the adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACLR) of OFDM signals with several hundred subcarriers corresponding to 4G mobile radio communications. It has been confirmed that a fifth-order PD is effective up to a higher power level. The improvement of error vector magnitude (EVM) by the PD is also simulated for OFDM signals of which the subcarrier channels are modulated by 16 QAM.
