The smart and intelligent system of FTTH is expected to be a key element which provides centralized monitoring, survivability and instantly maintenance of FTTH customer access network. A challenging task for network planners is to reduce network protection costs while maintaining an acceptable level of survivability. In this paper, we implement a cost effective restoration scheme for a novel tree-based EPON architecture for intermediate split structure (ISS) in the drop region section. The protection mechanism for tree based optical switch will have capability to divert the signal onto protection line according to the types of failure condition and location of failures in access network. This will ensure the data flow continuously due to breakdown occur in the network and instantly repair operation before it cause any major problem later. We employ the dedicated and shared protection in our design. Four faulty conditions are considered in this article and OptiSystem, Inc. software is used to prove the solution feasibility.

Trust-based solutions provide some form of payment to peers to encourage good behavior. The problem with trust management systems is that they require prior knowledge to work. In other words, peers are vulnerable to attack if they do not have knowledge or correct knowledge of other peers in a trust management system. Therefore, considering only trust is inadequate when a decision is made to identify the best set of peers to utilize. In order to solve the problem, we propose a distributed decision-making mechanism for wireless P2P networks based on game theory and relevant trust mechanisms in which we incorporate the element of trust and risk into a single mode. The main idea of our mechanism is to use utility function to express the relationship between benefits and costs of peers, and then make the decision based on expected utility as well as risk attitude in a fully distributed fashion. The unique feature of our mechanism is that it not only helps a peer to select its partners, but also mitigates vulnerabilities in trust-based mechanisms. Through analysis and experiments, we believe our approach is useful for peers to make the decision regarding who to interact with. In addition, it is also a good starting point for exploring tradeoffs among risk, trust and utility.

The objective of this study is to determine and troubleshoot the problems of using handheld optical power meter and optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) for monitoring and troubleshooting a conventional passive optical network (PON) equipped with optical splitter/coupler that used to broadcast optical signals from one fiber to many fibers. This paper proposes an appreciate approach to overcome these testing challenges. In this enhancement, a commercially available OTDR is located at central office (CO) and a tapper circuit is designed to allow the OTDR testing signal to bypass the optical splitter/coupler in a conventional PON when emitted from CO towards customer sites for centralized monitoring in downstream direction. This provides a faster, simpler, and less complex way for installation testing, service activation testing, and network performance monitoring and in-service troubleshooting a PON.

This paper presented a new approach to monitor the network performance and detect any occurrence of fault in fiber-to-the-home passive optical network (FTTH-PON) using an efficient monitoring system named Smart Access network Testing, Analyzing and Database (SANTAD). An optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) with 1625 nm laser source is located at central office (CO) and connected to a remote personnel computer (PC) via Ethernet TCP/IP connection. A tapper circuit is designed to allow the OTDR testing signal to bypass the optical splitter in a conventional FTTH-PON when emitted in downstream direction. The key idea is to accumulate all OTDR measurement to be displayed on a PC computer screen for centralized monitoring and advanced data analyzing. The main advantages of this work is to improve the survivability and efficiency of FTTH-PON, while reduce the hands on workload as well as maintenance cost and time. The proposed system was implemented in a FTTH-PON network testbed and the experimental results showed that the proposed system achieves high accuracy in addressing the exact failure location.

A real-time optical network monitoring system named Smart Access network _ Testing, Analyzing and Database (SANTAD) that combined remote controlling, centralized monitoring and troubleshooting, fault detection, optical switching as well as protection and restoration features is introduced for delivering high quality of services (QoS) for passive optical network (PON). The implementation of SANTAD in PON shows its contribution on obtains the high accuracy in detecting any occurrence of fault and addressing the failure location within 30 seconds. The main advantages of this work are to assists the network operators to manage the PON network system more efficiently, reduce hands on workload, minimize network downtime, and rapidly restore failed services when problems are detected and diagnosed.

In this work we propose a Pulse-Wave (PW) extension to the Angle-of-arrival-assisted Radio Interferometry (ARI) technique to dramatically reduce the scan-time and the number of vantage points necessary to obtain high-fidelity target position estimation. Accordingly, we call this enhanced process PW-ARI. PW-ARI is the fusion of data from three domains: time (time-of-flight), phase (relative phase-of-arrival), and angle (direction-of-arrival). It has a number of desirable attributes. Foremost among these are its ability to rapidly image extremely large volumes with high accuracy and dense target clusters, support an infinite number of friendly aircraft while providing stealth operational support, and present a spectrally small footprint to both hostile (evade detection and counter-measures) and friendly (maximize electromagnetic compatibility) systems.

In this paper, we demonstrate how to characterize transactions executed on multi-server systems. The characterization is performed with the help of readily available open source components, and is used to build a mean value analysis model in order to estimate transaction response times for arbitrary loads, as well as system capacity. Although an e-commerce system is used, the characterization method described is applicable to any multi-server system.

In this paper, we introduce a mean value analysis based methodology for performance evaluation of transactions executed in a multi server distributed system. We first present probabilistic arguments to investigate under which conditions MVA models provide worst case response times, without large overshoots. Then, we show how to characterize the distributed server system so as to construct a model to predict response times as well as estimate system capacity. Finally, we exemplify the methodology usage via transactions implemented in two distributed Linux systems.

This paper focused on the implementation of automatic device switching to perform in restoration scheme located at distribution fiber section. This protection device is potentially will improve the system efficiency in order to provide the continuous data flow until it reach to the end user. We proposed for immediate split structure in EPON network when the signal is totally split when it pass through the optical splitter. The restoration scheme proposed in this paper was presented and the simulation results proved the system feasibility. The bit error rate (BER) performances are measured by a 1.25 Gb/s non-return-to zero (NRZ) pseudo random binary sequence (PBRS) with a pattern length of 2 31 -1 for the downstream traffic between OLT and 8 ONUs. Our results were obtained by observing bit error rates, eye diagram, and optical power levels.

Optical 1x12 fused-taper-twisted polymer optical fiber (POF) splitters has been fabricated by a perform techni-que. Characterization of the splitter which proposed to be used in short haul communication application was reported. Characterization test on the network were observed. The maximum output power efficiency of the splitter is about 40%.
