Multi-Agent systems (MAS) are collection of loosely coupled intelligent agents. These systems operate in a distributed, highly dynamic, unpredictable and unreliable environment in order to meet their overall goals. Agents in such an environment are vulnerable to different types of run time exceptions. It is necessary to have an effective exception diagnosis and resolution mechanism in place in order to ensure reliable interactions between agents. In this paper, we propose novel exception diagnosis architecture for open MAS. The proposed architecture classifies the runtime exceptions and diagnoses the underlying causes of exceptions using a heuristic classification technique. The proposed architecture is realised in terms of specialised exception diagnosing agents known as sentinel agents. The sentinel agents act as delegates of problem solving agents and mediate interactions between them. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Increasingly, software must adapt its behavior in response to changes in the supporting computing, communication infrastructure, and in the surrounding physical environment. Since most existing software was not designed to adapt, research on technique to make legacy software dynamically adaptive has gained increasing interest. Assurance is crucial for adaptive software to fulfill its intended purpose. Correctness is even more critical if it is to be applied in high assurance systems. This paper proposes a model-driven approach to introduce dynamic adaptation to non-adaptive legacy systems while maintaining assurance properties. An aspect-oriented technique is applied to achieve separation of concerns in the implementation.

Reprogramming is an essential service for wireless sensor networks. Authenticating reprogramming process is important as sensors need to verify that the code image is truly from a trusted source. There are two ways to achieve authentication: public key based and symmetric key based. Although previous work has shown that public key authentication is feasible on sensor nodes if used sparingly, it is still quite expensive compared to symmetric key based approach. In this paper, we propose a symmetric key based protocol for authenticating reprogramming process. Our protocol is based on the secret instantiation algorithm from, which requires only O(log n) keys to be maintained at each sensor. We integrate this algorithm with the existing reprogramming protocol. Through simulation, we show that it is able to authenticate reprogramming process at very low communication cost, and has very short delay.

Wireless communication systems often require multiband receivers. The multiband operation is controlled by the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). MOSFET switches are commonly used in the switched capacitor array in multiband VCOs, but the noisy MOSFET switches have a great impact on the phase noise performance of the system. This paper presents a thermally actuated MEMS switch used in a differential Colpitts VCO. The phase noise performance is 21 dB better than MOSFET switched VCO circuit.

Information security, including integrity and privacy, is an important concern among today's computer users due to increased connectivity. Despite a number of secure algorithms that have been proposed, the trade-offs made between security and performance demands further research toward improvement. In bulk data transfer, especially in large messages, the secured processing time takes much longer than non-secured processes. This is due to crypto operations, which include symmetric encryption operations and hashing functions. In the current bulk data transfer phase in secure socket layer (SSL), the server or the client firstly calculates the message authentication code (MAC) of the data using keyed-hash message authentication code (HMAC) operation, and then performs the symmetric encryption on the data together with the MAC. This paper proposes a new algorithm which provides a significant performance gain in bulk data transfer without compromising the security. The proposed algorithm performs the encryption of the data and the calculation of the MAC in parallel. The server calculates the MAC of the data at the same time as the encryption process of the data. Once the calculation of the MAC is completed, only then the MAC will be encrypted. The algorithm was simulated in two processors with one processor performing the MAC calculation and the other on encrypting the data, simultaneously. The communication between the two processors was done via message passing interface (MPI). Based on the performance simulations, the new parallel algorithm gained speedup of 1.74 with 85% efficiency over the current (sequential) algorithm.

The paper presents a multi-tier, integrated, distributed, Inpatient Healthcare Information System based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) .NET environment in National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). The architecture and outcomes of the newly developed Inpatient Information System (IIS) platform are discussed in details. We also present mechanisms of integration as well as interoperability among the components and multi-database in IIS via Health Level Seven (HL7) Middleware layer. The preliminary performance of the current operating IIS is evaluated and analyzed to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the architecture we designed. ©2007 IEEE.

Hand-held mobile devices are having a wide spectrum of applications. Such devices which incorporate sending images of relevant legal significance require certifying the source of the image. Hand-held devices inherently have very limited energy resources. The aim of this work is to propose low energy authentication mechanism even when using public-key cryptography. We proposed a technique for fast public-key image authentication using fuzzy-computations for the El-Gamal authentication technique. The fuzzy operations are embedded in the authentication computations to sign images without performing high complexity operations such as exponentiations. The result is low complexity and low energy processing on the mobile device site. The technique is rather general and can be deployed similarly for other similar environments. The fact that power consumption/speed is becoming an essential issue for hand-held devices make this technique very promising for future applications. © 2007 IEEE.

We studied the possibility of using wireless sensor networks for vehicle identification. It is interesting because it is not only challenging but also practical. It is challenging to develop algorithms and/or protocols for sensor nodes to execute since each sensor node has limited computation and communication capabilities, and these limitations prohibit the use of algorithms and/or protocols developed for conventional computer and networks. It is practical since each sensor is dispensable and easily deployable, yet it can do meaningful works when it is collaborated as a networked cluster. Our goal is to identify vehicles in real time using acoustic signal sensors and wireless networks. Our contribution in this paper is two fold. First, we develop a simple vehicle sound identification algorithm enough to be implemented on capacity limited sensor nodes. Second, we propose architecture and protocols of wireless sensor networks for vehicle identification using this developed sound classification algorithm. Our preliminary results show the proposed architecture and protocols are promising.

One of the most significant current groups of security endangerments in the Internet is DoS/DDoS attacks. The goal of these kinds of attacks is to completely engage available resources so that legitimate users are not able to access a service. Some traceback approach has been proposed to traceback source of attack. One of these methods is Intention-driven iTrace which is the working base of the ICMP traceback. By this method, it will be possible to increase effective ICMP traceback messages which can provide useful information to the victim in tracing source of attack. Reconstructed path to the source of attack by the victim can be done accurately when more effective ICMP traceback messages are generated in critical routers. In this paper, we proposed a model considering incoming packets routed to the victim and by modifying intention-driven iTrace model, we can generate more effective ICMP traceback packets to locate the source of attack more accurately.
