Detecting errors early within the development process for an embedded system assists a developer in avoiding excessive error correction costs and minimizing catastrophic losses resulting from failures in deployed systems. Towards that end, this paper presents i2MAP, an iterative and incremental goal-driven process for constructing an analysis-level UML model of an embedded system. The UML model is formally analyzed for adherence to the behavioral properties captured in a companion goal model. The process uses goal modeling to capture the requirements of the system, and uses UML to capture analysis-level structural and behavioral information. Both types of i2MAP models can be used to drive a rigorous approach to model-driven development of embedded systems. In this paper, we illustrate the i2MAP process and the accompanying tool suite in the development of an embedded system model for an adaptive light control system.

National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) is an academic hospital having over hundred years' history and large scale. There are existing problems in the NTUH portal site. It contains multi-system entrances and display, maintenance of numerous function linkages. In here, we design a new portal site to solve these problems. The single sign on service (SSOS) solves the multi-system entrance problem. For the function linkage problem, we design dynamic, hierarchical drop-down navigation menus to enlarge the browsing capacity for covering over 250 function links and two bulletins in one page. The XML formatted configuration files are designed to dynamically establish function linkages. The approach makes the linkage management easier. Moreover, we maintain configuration parameters, i.e., access control capabilities, linkage modes and multi-server redirections, as well as target control, in configuration files. All these features enhance NTUH portal site administration flexible and usage intuitive. In addition, the future works have been addressed clearly.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

Hand-held mobile devices are having a wide spectrum of applications. Such devices which incorporate sending images of relevant legal significance require certifying the source of the image. Hand-held devices inherently have very limited energy resources. The aim of this work is to propose low energy authentication mechanism even when using public-key cryptography. We proposed a technique for fast public-key image authentication using fuzzy-computations for the El-Gamal authentication technique. The fuzzy operations are embedded in the authentication computations to sign images without performing high complexity operations such as exponentiations. The result is low complexity and low energy processing on the mobile device site. The technique is rather general and can be deployed similarly for other similar environments. The fact that power consumption/speed is becoming an essential issue for hand-held devices make this technique very promising for future applications.

The paper presents a multi-tier, integrated, distributed, inpatient healthcare information system based on service oriented architecture (SOA) .NET environment in National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). The architecture and outcomes of the newly developed inpatient information system (IIS) platform are discussed in details. We also present mechanisms of integration as well as interoperability among the components and multi-database in IIS via health level seven (HL7) Middleware layer. The preliminary performance of the current operating IIS is evaluated and analyzed to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the architecture we designed.

A Study of Alloyed Nanowires from Two Perspectives: Approximate Dispersion and Transmission

Local atomic arrangement in heterostructures or disorder due to alloying, surface roughness and impurities strongly influence the bandstructure and charge transport. With decreasing diameters down to nanometer scales, disorder can no longer be treated in an average manner using the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) and the need for atomistic simulations arises. This work looks at the nanoscale devices from two different perspectives. The materials science perspective in which average bandstructure of the whole nanowire is computed using the nanoelectronic modeling tool (NEMO‐3D) and the zone‐unfolding algorithm. The device physics perspective, where the transmission coefficient is calculated with an atomistic non‐equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) approach. Both approaches use 20 band sp3d5s* empirical tight‐binding model with spin orbit coupling. The connection between dispersions and transmission coefficients of AlGaAs random alloy nanowires is highlighted. Both, transmission coefficients and average bandstructures show reduced bandgaps and noisy behavior. Their complimentary and mutually supporting nature provides a significant insight into the physics of charge transport through disordered systems.

The WATERS network (WATer and Environmental Research systems network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. Automated analysis of natural language properties for UML models

It is well known that errors introduced early in the development process are commonly the most expensive to correct. The increasingly popular model-driven architecture (MDA) exacerbates this problem by propagating these errors automatically to design and code. This paper describes a round trip engineering process that supports the specification of a UML model using CASE tools, the analysis of specified natural language properties, and the subsequent model refinement to eliminate errors uncovered during the analysis. This process has been implemented in SPIDER, a tool suite that enables developers to specify and analyze a UML model with respect to behavioral properties specified in terms of natural language. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Achieving acceptable quality of service in highly dynamic computing environments requires not only adaptation and reconfiguration of individual components of the system, but also collaboration among these components. To address these issues in adaptive multimedia applications, we propose COCA, a contract-based collaborative adaptation infrastructure. COCA uses contract specifications to describe the relationships among different system components, to generate code that realizes adaptive functionality, and to govern system-wide adaptive behavior during execution. COCA also provides a set of reusable adaptation services that enable legacy components to be integrated into an adaptive system. We demonstrate the use of COCA to construct an adaptive multimedia conferencing system from a collection of existing components that were not originally designed for interoperation. © 2006 IEEE.

Increasingly, software should dynamically adapt its behavior at run-time in response to changing conditions in the supporting computing and communication infrastructure, and in the surrounding physical environment. In order for an adaptive program to be trusted, it is important to have mechanisms to ensure that the program functions correctly during and after adaptations. Adaptive programs are generally more difficult to specify, verify, and validate due to their high complexity. Particularly, when involving multi-threaded adaptations, the program behavior is the result of the collaborative behavior of multiple threads and software components. This paper introduces an approach to create formal models for the behavior of adaptive programs. Our approach separates the adaptation behavior and nonadaptive behavior specifications of adaptive programs, making the models easier to specify and more amenable to automated analysis and visual inspection. We introduce a process to construct adaptation models, automatically generate adaptive programs from the models, and verify and validate the models. We illustrate our approach through the development of an adaptive GSM-oriented audio streaming protocol for a mobile computing application. Copyright 2006 ACM.
