The advancement of technology has an influence on consumers' decision to switch from executing your financial information in a conventional way to doing so online. Contracts are encouraged by the use of cloud computers or its key feature of accessibility from everywhere. The enormous amount of data handled by the cloud platform used to facilitate money transfers necessitates maintaining a high degree of security for all those important passwords stored there. Although the conventional authentication methods continue to work well in protecting data in cloud, more sophisticated cyber attacks against cloud-based storage of information still exist. Additionally, using typical cryptographic primitives to secure cloud data requires a significant amount of operation time due to the need to execute verification checks for both valid and illegitimate access control. © 2022 IEEE.

In recent years, there has been an alarming decline in bee populations both globally and in Sri Lanka, severely impacting ecosystems and agriculture worldwide. Traditional methods in Sri Lankan beekeeping are often time-consuming and less efficient, making hive management and health assessment challenging. This paper introduces a smart IoT-based beehive monitoring system tailored to the Sri Lankan beekeeping industry. The system integrates various sensors to measure key hive parameters, such as temperature, humidity, and weight, offering beekeepers a user-friendly web interface for real-time monitoring of hive conditions. It also provides insights into hive management aspects, including feeding needs, optimal harvesting times, and abnormal temperature detection within the hive. This paper highlights the initial steps towards implementing a robust IoT-based beehive monitoring system, acknowledging its current limitations. By addressing these limitations in the future, the authors aim to develop a more effective and efficient monitoring method for Sri Lankan beekeepers, saving time and enhancing the productivity and health of bee colonies.

This study proposes a comprehensive method to reduce the problems posed by global air pollution. To measure pollution levels and raise public awareness, the research uses a comprehensive strategy that incorporates image processing, time series analysis, chatbot, and facemask recognition. Time series analysis is used to build prediction models by recognizing historical patterns, and image processing techniques are used to examine cloud pictures for precise pollution predictions. Chatbots provide real time communication and may educate the public on environmental facts, health risks, and safety procedures. Additionally, it has a facemask identification system that monitors and promotes the use of masks. Importantly this not only encourages users to take action to reduce pollution but also utilizes predictive models to help mitigate pollution's consequences. These components result in improved public health, environmental conservation, and sustainability. The outcomes reflect significant advantages, with evidence of accuracy and its positive impact on both awareness and proactive measures to combat air pollution.

Large language models (LLMs) have garnered significant attention lately, and one particular implementation that has captivated users is ChatGPT, a first-of-its kind innovation that sparks intense debates among professionals regarding its ethical boundaries, especially after it was released for public use. Some of the debates are ongoing, with several people getting more used to this tool and some losing touch with several ethical concerns. Thus, it is crucial to explore the early professional’s perspectives surrounding ChatGPT to comprehend its potential impact on the educational sector and, in particular, society in general. This research aims to address this knowledge gap by employing data mining techniques on LinkedIn to analyze ChatGPT-related discussions and provide a comprehensive textual examination. The dataset for this investigation consists of 166 records written in English by LinkedIn users discussing ChatGPT in its early stage. The study utilized VOSviewer software to clean, analyze, mine, and visualize the data. Among the sample, it was observed that 49% of the users are PhD holders, predominantly with experience in scientific research and data science fields. Hence, the findings reveal that issues such as plagiarism, references, citations, manuscripts, papers, and literature reviews stand out as the major concerns. These results suggest that while ChatGPT can contribute to academic progress by fostering new knowledge, thoughts, and ideas, it can also facilitate academic misconduct, including plagiarism and inaccurate information dissemination. Therefore, this paper also provides discussions on the implications and ethical issues of ChatGPT. In particular, it is imperative to establish clear ethical boundaries and guidelines for the appropriate use of LLMs in academic settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Self-ensemble adversarial training methods improve model robustness by ensembling models at different training epochs, such as model weight averaging (WA). However, previous research has shown that self-ensemble defense methods in adversarial training (AT) still suffer from robust overfitting, which severely affects the generalization performance. Empirically, in the late phases of training, the AT becomes more overfitting to the extent that the individuals for weight averaging also suffer from overfitting and produce anomalous weight values, which causes the self-ensemble model to continue to undergo robust overfitting due to the failure in removing the weight anomalies. To solve this problem, we aim to tackle the influence of outliers in the weight space in this work and propose an easy-to-operate and effective Median-Ensemble Adversarial Training (MEAT) method to solve the robust overfitting phenomenon existing in self-ensemble defense from the source by searching for the median of the historical model weights. Experimental results show that MEAT achieves the best robustness against the powerful AutoAttack and can effectively allievate the robust overfitting. We further demonstrate that most defense methods can improve robust generalization and robustness by combining with MEAT.

Autonomous cyber and cyber-physical systems need to perform decision-making, learning, and control in unknown environments. Such decision-making can be sensitive to multiple factors, including modeling errors, changes in costs, and impacts of events in the tails of probability distributions. Although multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) provides a framework for learning behaviors through repeated interactions with the environment by minimizing an average cost, it is not adequate to overcome the above challenges. In this paper, we develop a distributed MARL approach to solve decision-making problems in unknown environments by learning risk-aware actions. We use the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) to define the cost function that is being minimized, and introduce a Bellman operator to characterize the value function associated to a given state-action pair. We prove that this operator satisfies a contraction property, and that it converges to the optimal value function. We then propose a distributed MARL algorithm called the CVaR QD-Learning algorithm, and establish that value functions of individual agents reach consensus. We identify several challenges that arise in the implementation of the CVaR QD-Learning algorithm, and present solutions to overcome these. We evaluate the CVaR QD-Learning algorithm through simulations, and demonstrate the effect of a risk parameter on value functions at consensus.

DomainDemo: a dataset of domain-sharing activities among different demographic groups on Twitter

Social media play a pivotal role in disseminating web content, particularly during elections, yet our understanding of the association between demographic factors and political discourse online remains limited. Here, we introduce a unique dataset, DomainDemo, linking domains shared on Twitter (X) with the demographic characteristics of associated users, including age, gender, race, political affiliation, and geolocation, from 2011 to 2022. This new resource was derived from a panel of over 1.5 million Twitter users matched against their U.S. voter registration records, facilitating a better understanding of a decade of information flows on one of the most prominent social media platforms and trends in political and public discourse among registered U.S. voters from different sociodemographic groups. By aggregating user demographic information onto the domains, we derive five metrics that provide critical insights into over 129,000 websites. In particular, the localness and partisan audience metrics quantify the domains’ geographical reach and ideological orientation, respectively. These metrics show substantial agreement with existing classifications, suggesting the effectiveness and reliability of DomainDemo’s approach. © 2025, CC BY.

As space technology advances, launching low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites become easier and LEO satellites are being used in various fields. In particular, LEO synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system is in the spotlight with many advantages, e.g., regardless of weather condition, 24 hour operation. SAR system can be used in various fields such as object detection and disaster observation. However, SAR image has speckling noise, so image pre-processing must be required. There are many researches on the SAR image processing, however, few publications are considering a buffer status. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest the optimal SAR image pre-processing in LEO SAR satellites and a ground station with finite buffer based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). As a result of DRL simulation, while changing the buffer size of the LEO SAR satellites, efficiency of buffer was improved by selecting the optimal filter size according to the state of the buffer. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper considers the problem of designing non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI) strategies, such as masking and social distancing, to slow the spread of a viral epidemic. We formulate the problem of jointly minimizing the infection probabilities of a population and the cost of NPIs based on a Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) propagation model. To mitigate the complexity of the problem, we consider a steady-state approximation based on the quasi-stationary (endemic) distribution of the epidemic, and prove that the problem of selecting a minimum-cost strategy to satisfy a given bound on the quasi-stationary infection probabilities can be cast as a submodular optimization problem, which can be solved in polynomial time using the greedy algorithm. We carry out experiments to examine effects of implementing our NPI strategy on propagation and control of epidemics on a Watts-Strogatz small-world graph network. We find the NPI strategy reduces the steady state of infection probabilities of members of the population below a desired threshold value. © 2024, CC BY.
