OSM2Net: A Robust Road Network Extraction Framework from Noisy Indoor Parking OpenStreetMap

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) rely on high-precision road networks, which are particularly scarce in indoor parking. Existing methods depend on expensive hardware (e.g., LiDAR) or manual mapping, both of which are costly and inefficient. The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has enabled large-scale data collection and connectivity, offering new opportunities for automated road network extraction. OpenStreetMap (OSM), as a crowdsourced IoT-driven platform, provides multi-layer geospatial data, including the Road Network Layer (RNL), Lane Boundary Layer (LBL), and Turn Sign Layer (TSL). However, OSM data often suffers from incompleteness and noisy connectivity, affecting the continuity and accuracy of road networks. This paper introduces OSM2Net, a novel framework designed to extract road networks from individual layers and leverage multi-layer data to construct directed road networks. Specifically, OSM2Net rasterizes noisy OSM data into bitmaps for image processing and multi-layer fusion. By leveraging the topology relationship between lane boundaries and road networks, a Lane-Road Map Generator (LRMG) creates a simulated dataset for training. Then, utilizing the simulated dataset, a Lane2Net model is designed to extract road networks from sparse lane boundary images. The framework then vectorizes bitmaps into a lightweight, undirected road network and refines it into a directed network by extracting and matching turn sign information. Experimental results show that Lane2Net achieves Intersection over Union (IoU) of 93% and 92% using simulated and real-world datasets, respectively. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets confirm that OSM2Net delivers robust completeness and high-quality road network extraction. © 2014 IEEE.

Energy Consumption Minimization for Mobile Edge Generation

The novel concept of mobile edge generation (MEG) is investigated, where the generative artificial intelligence (GAI) model is partitioned into sub-models to be distributed in the network edge, thus enabling latent feature exchange between the edge server and user equipments (UEs). A seed coding module is introduced to encode the intermediate latent features generated by the GAI sub-model at the edge server into flexibly-sized seed for transmission to UEs, instead of transmitting large-size raw data. A weighted energy consumption minimization problem is formulated by jointly optimizing the seed coding ratio (SCR), transmit power, and computing frequencies while guaranteeing the quality-of-generation requirements including total latency and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). To enhance the resilience of the MEG models against the channel noise, a joint fine-tuning scheme based on low-rank adaption is proposed to train the introduced rank-reduced bypass matrices and seed coding module. Based on the fine-tuned results, a PSNR model regarding SCR and communication signal-to-noise ratio is established to overcome the optimization difficulty due to the lack of the explicit PSNR model. A proximal policy optimization-based MEG energy consumption optimization (MEG-ECO) algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated problem, where the order of magnitude balancing on state and penalty shaping are exploited for more efficient learning. Numerical results reveal that 1) the fine-tuned MEG models have superior resilience against the channel noise;2) the proposed MEG-ECO algorithm can significantly reduce energy consumption by up to 87.4% compared to conventional centralized generation and up to 33.5% against MEG without seed coding module;and 3) the energy consumption decreases when more partial models are assigned to the edge server, whereas this impact diminishes as the latency threshold is relaxed. © 2025 IEEE.

Roles in a movie form a small society and their interrelationship provides clues for movie understanding. Based on this observation, we present a new viewpoint to perform semantic movie analysis. Through checking the co-occurrence of roles in different scenes, we construct a roles' social network to describe their relationships. We introduce the concept of social network analysis to elaborately identify leading roles and the hidden communities. With the results of community identification, we perform storyline detection that facilitates more flexible movie browsing and higher-level movie analysis. The experimental results show that the proposed community identification method is accurate and is robust to errors.

A Multi-Head Attention Mechanism Assisted MADDPG Algorithm for Real-Time Data Collection in Internet of Drones

Flexible movement and rapid deployment capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones have enabled them to be ideal for fresh and real-time data collection in the Internet of Drones (IoD) network. With the rising demand for IoD applications, optimizing the Age of Information (AoI) and energy efficiency of drones has become a challenging problem. The existing literature works are either limited by considering single-drone data collection from 2D space or by not prioritizing data from diverse IoT devices. In this paper, we have developed an optimization framework for multi-drone-assisted data collection in 3D space, which brings a trade-off between minimizing drone energy consumption and AoI, exploiting the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. However, due to the NP-hardness of the developed optimization framework for large networks, we have devised a Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) algorithm, supported and enhanced by a Multi-Head Attention (MHA) mechanism for multi-drone-assisted data collection to minimize drone energy consumption and AoI jointly, namely MECAO. The MHA in the MECAO system helps prioritize IoT data sources and ensures the timely collection of important data. This system enables the agents to coordinate effectively among themselves and provides innovative solutions to complex network issues. Our findings demonstrate substantial advancements in real-time data collection and drone performance, offering a practical and efficient solution for modern IoD applications. The developed MECAO system is implemented in the OpenAI Gym simulator platform, and the simulation trace file content depicts the improvement in AoI by up to 56% while the energy consumption is reduced by as high as 38.5%, respectively, compared to the state-of-the-art works.

Advancements in emerging technologies, e.g., reconfigurable intelligent surfaces and holographic MIMO (HMIMO), facilitate unprecedented manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves, significantly enhancing the performance of wireless communication systems. To accurately characterize the achievable performance limits of these systems, it is crucial to develop a universal EM-compliant channel model. This paper addresses this necessity by proposing a comprehensive EM channel model tailored for realistic multi-path environments, accounting for the combined effects of antenna array configurations and propagation conditions in HMIMO communications. Both polarization phenomena and spatial correlation are incorporated into this probabilistic channel model. Additionally, physical constraints of antenna configurations, such as mutual coupling effects and energy consumption, are integrated into the channel modeling framework. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed probabilistic channel model, indicating that traditional Rician and Rayleigh fading models cannot accurately depict the channel characteristics and underestimate the channel capacity. More importantly, the proposed channel model outperforms free-space Green’s functions in accurately depicting both near-field gain and multi-path effects in radiative near-field regions. These gains are much more evident in tri-polarized systems, highlighting the necessity of polarization interference elimination techniques. Moreover, the theoretical analysis accurately verifies that capacity decreases with expanding communication regions of two-user communications. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Vehicular ad-hoc networks(VANETs)play an essential role in enhancing transport infrastructure by making vehicles intelligent and proficient in preventing traffic ***-based greedy protocols pick the next route vehicle for transmitting emergency messages(EMs)depending upon the present location of adjacent vehicles towards sink vehicles by using an optimal uni-directional road traffic ***,such protocols suffer performance degradation by ignoring the moving directions of vehicles in bi-directional road traffic where topological changes happen *** to the high number of vehicles,it is essential to broadcast EMs to all vehicles to prevent traffic delays and collisions.A cluster-based EM transmitting technique is proposed in this *** urban VANETs,this paper pioneers the clustering of bi-directional road traffic for robust and efficient routing of *** this regard,this paper introduces a routing protocol,namely,the bi-directional urban routing protocol(BURP).In addition to the paths and relative locations of vehicles,BURP takes account of the distance parameter by using the Hamming distance function to determine the direction ofmotion of vehicles and communicates EMs through the cluster head(CH).Amodified k-medoids algorithm is presented for the clustering of bi-directional road traffic.A median method is presented for selecting CH to ensure the longrunning of a *** results show that BURP provides enhanced throughput,a maximized packet delivery ratio,low energy consumption,and network delay relative to eminent routing protocols.

Danish wind turbines take unfortunate turn

The paper presents a wind turbine that was installed on a wind farm at Horns Rev. Now all these turbines at Denmark's Horns Rev - the biggest offshore wind farm built to date - would be moved to shore for repair and replacement of defective transformers and generators. Vestas Wind System A/S in Ringkobing, the world's leading wind technology supplier, blamed harsh sea conditions for the substandard performance of equipment supplied by ABB Ltd. The generator and transformer problems made it necessary to retrofit all 81 of the 2-megawatt turbines, at considerable expense.

A predictive video-on-demand bandwidth management using the Kalman filter over heterogeneous networks

In order to adapt the quality of an on-demand video stream over a time-varying bandwidth channel, a network-aware bandwidth estimation and rate control scheme are required. This paper proposes a predictive video-on-demand (VoD) bandwidth management and a feedback-based buffer control scheme for streaming fine granular scalability videos over wired/ WLAN/3G networks. The predictive VoD bandwidth management includes two parts: bandwidth estimation and rate adaptation. According to the measured information of packet round-trip-time, loss-rate, delay jitter and received bit-rate, an improved Kalman filter is proposed to predict an available bandwidth recursively, and to determine a proper transmission rate in consideration of buffer fullness of a decoder. The optimal parameters of the Kalman filter, e.g. a transition matrix and error covariances, can be initialized, converged and adapted to characteristics of the current network. In our experiments, distinct network traffic models are simulated in comparison with pathChirp and one Republic of China patent. The corresponding estimation results with respect to network information are also exhibited in the real networks. © The Author 2008.
