LARSI-TPE-XGB: Short-Term Load Forecasting by Load-Adaptive Relative Strength Index and Fusion of Tree-Structured Parzen Estimator and XGBoost

Power load forecasting is essential for optimizing power generation and distribution efficiency. This paper proposes a novel method for daily average load forecasting, referred to as LARSI-TPE-XGB, which integrates the Load-Adaptive Relative Strength Index (LARSI) with the Tree-structured Parzen Estimator (TPE) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). Our method significantly improves the accuracy and generalization ability of short-term load forecasting (STLF) by addressing limitations in feature extraction and hyperparameter optimization. The proposed LARSI enhances the forecasting model by adapting an improved Relative Strength Index (RSI) for power load prediction, while TPE optimizes the model's hyperparameters to dynamically adjust to time-series updates, thus mitigating the issue of XGBoost's sensitivity to hyperparameters in high-dimensional scenarios. Experimental results on real-world power load datasets demonstrate that LARSI-TPE-XGB reduces errors by 18.58% and 30.73% in root mean squared error (RMSE) across two different datasets compared to models without LARSI-TPE-XGB and outperforms state-of-the-art models, as confirmed by the Diebold-Mariano (DM) test. Our method consistently improves performance across various datasets, while we further investigate the influence of LARSI and other factors, such as weather conditions, on forecasting accuracy. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Towards an intrusion detection system for detecting web attacks based on an ensemble of filter feature selection techniques

The use of machine learning models in intrusion detection systems (IDSs) takes more time to build the model with many features and degrade the performance. The present paper proposes an ensemble of filter feature selection techniques (EFFST) to obtain a significant feature subset for web attack detection by selecting one-fourth split of the ranked features. The experimentation on the CICIDS 2017 dataset shows that the proposed EFFST method provides a detection rate of 99.9909%, with J48 using 24 features. The system’s performance is compared to the original features and traditional relevant feature selection methods employed in IDSs. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Ant lion optimization based inertia weight optimized KGMO for mobility Management in Heterogeneous LTE cellular networks

This study proposes a hybrid optimization-based mobility management strategy employing Kinetic Gas Molecular Optimization (KGMO) and Ant Lion Optimization (ALO). Initially, KGMO calculates particle properties, such as gas molecule position and velocity, based on kinetic energy principles. While KGMO demonstrates expedited convergence in large-dimensional spaces, its limitations prompt the hybridization with ALO. ALO modifies the inertia weight of KGMO to mitigate these issues. The proposed KGMO-ALO approach is implemented and validated in a MATLAB environment, compared against other meta-heuristic techniques like Seagull and Monarch Butterfly Optimizations across various performance metrics including throughput, bit error rate, end-to-end delay, and HO. Existing techniques such as PSO, MBO, and SOA exhibit superior performance primarily in scenarios with high user counts. The underperformance of ALO is attributed to its reliance on the best antlion solution in each optimization round. By leveraging the hybrid KGMO-ALO approach, this study aims to overcome these limitations and advance mobility management strategies in heterogeneous LTE cellular networks. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

IoT has emerged as a game-changing technology that connects numerous gadgets to networks for communication, processing, and real-time monitoring across diverse applications. Due to their heterogeneous nature and constrained resources, as well as the growing trend of using smart gadgets, there are privacy and security issues that are not adequately managed by conventional security measures. This review offers a thorough analysis of contemporary AI solutions designed to enhance security within IoT ecosystems. The intersection of AI technologies, including ML, and blockchain, with IoT privacy and security is systematically examined, focusing on their efficacy in addressing core security issues. The methodology involves a detailed exploration of existing literature and research on AI-driven privacy-preserving security mechanisms in IoT. The reviewed solutions are categorized based on their ability to tackle specific security challenges. The review highlights key advancements, evaluates their practical applications, and identifies prevailing research gaps and challenges. The findings indicate that AI solutions, particularly those leveraging ML and blockchain, offer promising enhancements to IoT privacy and security by improving threat detection capabilities and ensuring data integrity. This paper highlights how AI technologies might strengthen IoT privacy and security and offer suggestions for upcoming studies intended to address enduring problems and improve the robustness of IoT networks. A brief review on Quantum Key Distribution Protocols

Development in Quantum computing paves the path to Quantum key distribution (QKD) by using the principles of quantum physics. QKD enables two remote parties to produce and share secure keys while removing all computing constraints on an adversary. The basic physics laws are used to identify any outside parties eavesdropping on the key exchange. In recent years many revolutionary developments in the field of QKD have been developed to overcome security and networking constraints. This survey provides an overview of the QKD protocol’s evolution and quantum network architecture. The paper also demonstrates QKD deployment techniques and elements of the QKD network. It also highlights ongoing design challenges by considering security and error estimation and correction, in contrast to studies concentrating on optical channels and equipment. Feedback-based trust module for IoT networks using machine learning

The increasing emergence of IoT in healthcare, industrial automation, manufacturing, infrastructure, business and the home undoubtedly provides more conveniences in different aspects of human life. Any IoT security and trust solution must consider the heterogeneity and mobility of IoT devices, and the features of other devices connected to the network. Traditional security measures face computation, storage and communication challenges in securing IoT, and the increasing reliance on IoT services and applications has exacerbated this issue. It is crucial to identify a security management model to handle these constraints. Trust as a security regime in the IoT has far-reaching implications. This paper proposes a novel trust-based security mechanism by combining machine learning and traditional summations to determine a node’s trustworthiness in an IoT environment in milliseconds. Based on this, a computational trust management model is designed by aggregating direct and feedback-based trust information. The model parameters like the trust breach window and trust re-initiation point are selected based on extensive experimentation to dynamically calculate each node’s trust value to reach the proposed model’s peak performance. The model’s effectiveness is verified through simulation. In 500 iterations, the proposed model achieved 97% accuracy with a run time of 0.37 seconds. Copyright © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Quadratic and Lagrange interpolation-based butterfly optimization algorithm for numerical optimization and engineering design problem

This work proposes a novel and improved Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA), known as LQBOA, to solve BOA’s inherent limitations. The LQBOA uses Lagrange interpolation and simple quadratic interpolation techniques with adapted parameter settings to enhance the search strategy of BOA and to achieve a better balance of diversification and intensification. LQBOA’s performance was examined on 45 traditional benchmark issues as well as the IEEE CEC 2017 benchmark suites with 10, 30 and 50 dimensions, and the results were compared against popular state-of-the-art and modified algorithms. It was discovered that in more than 85% of cases, the proposed LQBOA outperformed the compared algorithms. The Friedman rank test and Wilcoxon rank test were used to validate the suggested LQBOA’s rank and significance. Additionally, convergence and diversity analyses were performed to investigate its convergence speed and searching behavior, respectively. Furthermore, LQBOA has been successfully deployed to solve twelve real-world issues including several engineering design problems and two multiple gravity assist spacecraft trajectory problems. The results of these problems were compared to those of a wide range of algorithms, demonstrating the superior performance of the proposed LQBOA. In conclusion, LQBOA makes a significant addition to the optimization area, and its application could greatly improve the performance of numerous optimization jobs. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Leveraging Transfer Learning for Efficient Diagnosis of COPD Using CXR Images and Explainable AI Techniques

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a predominant global health concern, ranking third in mortality rates, yet frequently remains undiagnosed until its advanced stages. Given its prevalence, the need for innovative and widely accessible diagnostic tools has never been more paramount. While spirometry tests serve as conventional diagnostic benchmarks, their reach remains limited, especially in regions with constrained medical resources. The presented research harnesses deep learning algorithms to facilitate early-stage COPD detection, specifically targeting Chest X-rays (CXRs). The clinically annotated VinDR-CXR dataset provides the primary foundation for model training, complemented by incorporating the ChestX-ray14 dataset for initial model pre-training. Such a dualdataset strategy augments model generalization and adaptability. Among several explored Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures, the Xception model emerges as a frontrunner. Through transfer learning methodologies, this model produces a noteworthy recall rate of 98.2%, markedly surpassing the metrics of the ResNet50 model. Recognizing the imperative for transparency in AI applications in medical imaging, the research integrates essential explainability approaches viz: Gradient Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). These techniques elucidate the AI’s decision-making process, offering invaluable visual and analytical insights for fostering trust among medical professionals. In essence, this study not only underscores the potential of integrating AI with medical imaging for COPD detection but also accentuates the pivotal role of transparency in AI-driven medical interventions. © IBERAMIA and the authors.
