This paper presents how the PerFECt framework is employed to enable innovative teaching and learning mathematics in schools using drama-based approaches. The topic addressed lies in the cross-section between mathematics and computer science: teaching and learning the binary system of arithmetic that constitutes the basis of modern computing. The work builds on previous research efforts targeting gamification of mathematics and is seen under new light offered by the Theatre in Mathematics (TIM) Methodology. The result is an engaging game to teach the binary system to children using their bodies and simple rules for interacting with each other. Following these simple rules the participants enact the operation of a calculator that is able to transform integers into their binary representations and compute the result of the four arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The game can be combined with online activities using a simulator of the game, so that learners can explore it for themselves and discover how the arithmetic operations are done, even when they are not in the same physical space with their peers. This way, an effective blended learning approach is ultimately offered combining face-to-face and online activities. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

To provide statistical service guarantee and achieve high network utilization, measurement-based admission control (MBAC) has been studied for over one decade. Many MBAC algorithms have been proposed in the literature. However, most of them belong to aggregate MBAC algorithms which assume or require that (1) first-in-first-out (FIFO) is used for aggregating flows; (2) statistical service guarantees are provided to the aggregate of admitted flows; (3) each flow requires and experiences the same statistical service guarantees as the aggregate. In this paper, we focus on per-flow MBAC that aims to provide possibly different statistical service guarantees to individual flows in an aggregate. Particularly, we propose a simple per-flow MBAC algorithm in which dynamic priority scheduling (DPS) is adopted to aggregate flows. With this DPS-based per-flow MBAC algorithm, a newly admitted flow is always given a lower priority level than all existing flows, and its priority level is improved if an existing flow leaves the system. Consequently, once a flow is admitted, its received service will not be adversely affected by other flows admitted after it. Because of this, there is no need to re-check or adjust network resources allocated to existing flows due to the admission of a new flow.

This paper generalizes the geometric representation of membership functions comprising a finite number of characteristic points. An extended class of membership functions, satisfying certain monotonicity conditions, can now be expressed as elements in the space of square integrable functions. Specifically, bell-shaped membership functions, which were not possible before, can now be accommodated with this generalized representation. An example interpolation problem, treated using both the finite-dimensional approach and the generalized approach, is included for illustration.

The last few years have witnessed an increasing interest in modular reconfigurable robotics for education, inspired robotic research, and space applications. This paper presents the latest results of the cube-M modular project. Firstly, an overview of the research achievements in modular robot is given. Then the new modular robot cube-M with one degree of freedom, an improved version of the Y1 modular robot, is presented. After that, the discussion focuses on the realization of a distributed hardware and control. Each module has embedded intelligent capabilities with an independent onboard controller to enable the realization of completely modular design. In the end, a snake-like robot prototype is built to confirm the feasibility of our design principle.

The success of cellular communications networks shows the interest of users in mobility. Host mobility support in IP networks is a first step in the adaptation of these networks to the needs of users in this field. But, there exists also the need of supporting the movement of a complete network that changes its point of attachment to the fixed infrastructure. This paper describes the architecture designed in the EU DAIDALOS II project to provide Internet access through moving networks. The designed moving networks architecture support the following main features: Route Optimisation, Multicast traffic delivery, security and authentication integration, end-to-end QoS and interaction with Localised Mobility Management solutions.

The RNA inverse folding problem involves discovering a nucleotide sequence that folds into a desired target structure. Although many computational methods based on diverse approaches have been proposed over the years to solve this problem, none of them have been able to solve the entire Eterna100 set, which is a popular benchmark. As a result, there is still significant room for improvement in this area. To address this challenge, we developed eM2dRNAs, an enhanced version of m2dRNAs, which is a Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) used to solve the RNA inverse folding problem. Our approach starts with the recursive decomposition of the target structure, simplifying the problem to be solved. We conducted a comparative study of our method against several published methods using the Eterna100 benchmark. The results showed that our proposal performs significantly better than the other methods across almost all metrics and categories considered, thus achieving our objective of improving the ability to solve the RNA inverse folding problem. © 2023, The Authors. This paper introduces an optimal deployment algorithm of sensors in a given region to provide desired coverage and connectivity for a wireless sensor network. Our paper utilizes two separate procedures for covering different regions of a symmetrical rectangular area. The proposed method divides the given area of interest into two distinct sub-regions termed as the central and edge regions. In each region, a unique scheme is used to determine the number and location of sensors required to monitor and completely cover the region keeping the connectivity and coverage ranges of the sensors, their hardware specification and the dimensions of the region concerned as the constraints. Our scheme reduces the overhead in determining the position of sensors for deployment by following a coverage and connectivity algorithm of lesser complexity rather than those present in related schemes. Finally, we compare our deployment scheme with the interpolation scheme of [2] in regions of different dimensions and different coverage and connectivity levels with different sensing ranges of the sensors to show our cost efficiency over the latter.

Workload co-location has become the de-facto approach for hosting applications in Cloud environments, leading, however, to interference and fragmentation in shared resources of the system. To this end, hardware disaggregation is introduced as a novel paradigm, that allows fine-grained tailoring of cloud resources to the characteristics of the deployed applications. Towards the realization of hardware disaggregated clouds, novel orchestration frameworks must provide additional knobs to manage the increased scheduling *** present Adrias, a memory orchestration framework for disaggregated cloud systems. Adrias exploits information from low-level performance events and applies deep learning techniques to effectively predict the system state and performance of arriving workloads on memory disaggregated systems, thus, driving cognitive scheduling between local and remote memory allocation modes. We evaluate Adrias on a state-of-art disaggregated testbed and show that it achieves 0.99 and 0.942 R 2 score for system state and application’s performance prediction on average respectively. Moreover, Adrias manages to effectively utilize disaggregated memory, by offloading almost 1/3 of deployed applications with less than 15% performance overhead compared to a conventional local memory scheduling, while clearly outperforms naive scheduling approaches (random and round-robin), by providing up to ×2 better performance.

Semantic annotation and querying is currently applied on a number of versatile disciplines, providing the added-value of such an approach and, consequently the need for more elaborate - either case-specific or generic - tools. In this context, we have developed Eikonomia: an integrated semantically-aware tool for the description and retrieval of Byzantine artwork Information. Following the needs of the ORMYLIA Art Diagnosis Center for adding semantics to their legacy data, an ontology describing Byzantine artwork based on CIDOC-CRM, along with the interfaces for synchronization to and from the existing RDBMS have been implemented. This ontology has been linked to a reasoning tool, while a dynamic interface for the automated creation of semantic queries in SPARQL was developed. Finally, all the appropriate interfaces were instantiated, in order to allow easy ontology manipulation, query results projection and restrictions creation.
