Exploring the full potential of humanoid robots requires their ability to learn, generalize and reproduce complex tasks that will be faced in dynamic environments. In recent years, significant attention has been devoted to recovering kinematic information from the human motion using a motion capture system. This paper demonstrates and evaluates the use of a Kinectbased capture system that estimates the 3D human poses and converts them into gestures imitation in a robot. The main objectives are twofold: (1) to improve the initially estimated poses through a correction method based on constraint optimization, and (2) to present a method for computing the joint angles for the upper limbs corresponding to motion data from a human demonstrator. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated by experimental results showing the upper-limb imitation of human actions by a robot model. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

During the last years, applications requirements have been changing and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector had to evolve and explore new solutions to approach the requirements of applications of the future such as telepresence, augmented reality, metaverse, holoportation, etc. One of the aspects that could serve as a basis to satisfy the stringent QoS requirements of the applications of the future is the reduction of the latency caused by TCP retransmissions. Through the proactive location of a novel network function, namely Transport Assistant (TA), the delay caused by TCP retransmissions is reduced, thus improving the network QoS and satisfying the QoS required by the applications. In this paper, a Machine Learning solution based on Logistic Regression (LR) is proposed to predict which is the part of the network that is prone to negatively impact the network performance. Through experiments based on the training of historical data, the LR-based solution is able to predict the correct location of the TA with a precision average of 95% and accuracy of 90%. Such good results in the prediction help to make better decisions and therefore to save time and resources, improving the network management.

In recent years, the number of devices connected to the Internet (and hence the data traffic) has significantly increased. The adoption of the Internet of Things paradigm, the use of the MicroServices Architecture for applications and the possibility of deploying such applications at different layers (fog, edge, cloud), makes the selection of an appropriate deployment a critical task for network operators and developers. In this paper, an emulation framework is proposed to allow them make a decision for the network, computing and application deployment in the cloud continuum, while satisfying the required Quality of Service. The framework is compatible both for IP and SDN network paradigms and is extensible to different types of scenarios thanks to its approach based on Docker containers. The evaluation over a realistic network scenario shows that it is extensible to any scenario and deployment required by the research community working on the cloud continuum.

The Internet has become the driving wheel of social interactions as well as economic growth, but its access is vastly unequal. Noticeably, such rural dwellers experience a digital service access gap, due to the inadequate broadband infrastructure available to them when compared with their urban counterparts. This paper is aimed at overcoming the gap between rural communities with no reliable Internet service by deploying the service through the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). By decomposing the Internet of Things (IoT) applications into elements (namely microservices) and deploying them through UAVs, latency is shortened, distributing workload among UAVs while limiting microservice deployment to optimize request execution, making the quality service improvement, essential for such applications. Simulations revealed the effectiveness of our approach, as it indicated the lowest latency when a UAV connected to several users in scenarios where there was no Internet connectivity.

In recent work, we introduced a generalization of ECOC learning under the theory of recursive error correcting codes. We named it RECOC (Recursive ECOC) learning. If long output codewords are allowed, as in the case of problems involving a large number of classes, standard recursive codes such as LDPC or Turbo can be used. However, if the number of classes is moderated, neither good LDPC nor Turbo codes might exist due to the small block lengths involved. In this paper, RECOC learning based on the recently introduced ensemble of Product Accumulated codes is analyzed. Due to their native data storage oriented design, smaller block lengths are allowed. In addition, because of their simplicity, all key concepts regarding RECOC learning can be easily explained. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In complex and dynamic environments where interdependencies cannot monotonously determine causality, data mining techniques may be employed in order to analyze the problem, extract key features and identify pivotal factors. Typical cases of such complexity and dynamicity are supply chain networks, where a number of involved stakeholders struggle towards their own benefit. These stakeholders may be agents with varying degrees of autonomy and intelligence, in a constant effort to establish beneficiary contracts and maximize own revenue. In this paper, we illustrate the benefits of data mining analysis on a well-established agent supply chain management network. We apply data mining techniques, both at a macro and micro level, analyze the results and discuss them in the context of agent performance improvement. © 2008 IEEE.

The prediction of gene function from genome sequences is one of the main issues in Bioinformatics. Most computational approaches are based on the similarity between sequences to infer gene function. However, the availability of several fully sequenced genomes has enabled alternative approaches, such as phylogenetic profiles. Phylogenetic profiles are vectors which indicate the presence or absence of a gene in other genomes. The main concept of phylogenetic profiles is that proteins participating in a common structural complex or metabolic pathway are likely to evolve in a correlated fashion. In this paper, a multi level clustering algorithm of phylogenetic profiles is presented, which aims to detect inter- and intragenome gene clusters. © 2010 IEEE.

Currently, students' mobility in Higher Education has become very common and frequent. Although the transitioning process could be thought to be smooth and quick, students moving from one institution to another must go through rigorous and unfortunately, non-standardized academic validation processes. Usually, most part of the process, including credits recognition and syllabi comparison are manually performed, consuming excessive time and massive human effort. Some of these academic processes however, could be optimized by means of computer technologies, which support data processing and help solving real-life problems usually found in the academic field. In the specific case of Ecuador, we have identified that each Higher Education Institution (HEI) manages customized curricular information management systems which include non-standard syllabi structured documents. The existence of custom made formats at every HEI has originate a large variety of data models. In this work, we propose to address these problems by identifying similarities between different current syllabi of Ecuadorian HEIs, aiming to the optimization, integration and improvement of the academic activities related to the students' mobility processes, such as credits recognition. This proposal relies on the definition of a standard data model, which is used to describe the academic syllabus and that allows the implementation of a computer-based system focused on similarities detection through the use of semantic web technologies and text mining tools. Three‐dimensional imaging of the brain cavities in human embryos

A system for high‐resolution three‐dimensional imaging of small structures has been developed, based on the Vingmed CFM‐800 annular array sector scanner with a 7.5‐MHz transducer attached to a PC‐based TomTec Echo‐Scan unit. A stepper motor rotates the transducer 180° and the complete three‐dimensional scan consists of 132 two‐dimensional images, video‐grabbed and scan‐converted in to a regular volumetric data set by the TomTec unit. Three normal pregnancies with embryos of gestational age 7, 9 and 10 weeks received a transvaginal examination with special attention to the embryonic/fetal brain. In all three cases, it was possible to obtain high‐resolution images of the brain cavities. At 7 weeks, both hemispheres and their connection to the third ventricle were delineated. The isthmus rhombencephali could be visualized. At 9 weeks, the continuous development of the brain cavities could be followed and at 11 weeks the dominating size of the hemispheres could be depicted. It is concluded that present ultrasound technology has reached a stage where structures of only a few millimeters can be imaged in vivo in three‐dimensions with a quality that resembles the plaster figures used in embryonic laboratories. The method can become an important tool in future embryological research and also in the detection of early developmental disorders of the embryo.
