A fundamental part of many authentication protocols which authenticate a party to a human involves the human recognizing or otherwise processing a message received from the party. Examples include typical implementations of Verified by Visa in which a message, previously stored by the human at a bank, is sent by the bank to the human to authenticate the bank to the human;or the expectation that humans will recognize or verify an extended validation certificate in a HTTPS context. This paper presents general definitions and building blocks for the modelling and analysis of human recognition in authentication protocols, allowing the creation of proofs for protocols which include humans. We cover both generalized trawling and human-specific targeted attacks. As examples of the range of uses of our construction, we use the model presented in this paper to prove the security of a mutual authentication login protocol and a human-assisted device pairing protocol. © 2014, Australian computer Society, Inc.

Under the auspices of the most recent education legislation, teachers are urged to apply competence-based evaluation to monitor students' progress towards the effective acquisition of key competences. As students have different learning needs and develop key competences at their own pace, we propose an alternative approach that would help teachers register students' tasks and evaluate them against such competences within an eportfolio that in turn forms part of an e-learning platform. In addition to this evaluation, the integration of support tasks adapted to each student's needs could encourage acquisition and independent learning.

Food texture is a complex property;various sensory attributes such as perceived crispiness and wetness have been identified as ways to quantify it. Objective and automatic recognition of these attributes has applications in multiple fields, including health sciences and food engineering. In this work we use an in-ear microphone, commonly used for chewing detection, and propose algorithms for recognizing three food-texture attributes, specifically crispiness, wetness (moisture), and chewiness. We use binary SVMs, one for each attribute, and propose two algorithms: one that recognizes each texture attribute at the chew level and one at the chewing-bout level. We evaluate the proposed algorithms using leave-one-subject-out cross-validation on a dataset with 9 subjects. We also evaluate them using leave-one-food-type-out cross-validation, in order to examine the generalization of our approach to new, unknown food types. Our approach performs very well in recognizing crispiness (0.95 weighted accuracy on new subjects and 0.93 on new food types) and demonstrates promising results for objective and automatic recognition of wetness and chewiness. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

To provide statistical service guarantee and achieve high network utilization, measurement-based admission control (MBAC) has been studied for over one decade. Many MBAC algorithms have been proposed in the literature. However, most of them belong to aggregate MBAC algorithms which assume or require that (1) First-In-First-Out (FIFO) is used for aggregating flows;(2) statistical service guarantees are provided to the aggregate of admitted flows;(3) each flow requires and experiences the same statistical service guarantees as the aggregate. In this paper, we focus on per-flow MBAC that aims to provide possibly different statistical service guarantees to individual flows in an aggregate. Particularly, we propose a simple per-flow MBAC algorithm in which dynamic priority scheduling (DPS) is adopted to aggregate flows. With this DPS-based per-flow MBAC algorithm, a newly admitted flow is always given a lower priority level than all existing flows, and its priority level is improved if an existing flow leaves the system. Consequently, once a flow is admitted, its received service will not be adversely affected by other flows admitted after it. Because of this, there is no need to re-check or adjust network resources allocated to existing flows due to the admission of a new flow. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper addresses the problem of robust filtering for uncertain linear signal models affected by time delays in the state. Uncertainty is structured and the model is assumed to lie in a given bounded polyhedral set. The main innovation is the use of a nonrational filter, that is, a filter that also contains delays in the filter state. Robust filtering performance is evaluated using the H2 or the H∞ norm. The performance conditions are delay independent, and provide convex filtering design problems which are convex optimization problems with linear matrix inequalities constraints.

Massive volumes of high-frequency and high-volume data are constantly being generated by the vast amount of available tracking sensors of moving objects. This phenomenon can be strongly observed in the maritime domain since most of the vessels transmit their location periodically. Automated methodologies able to extract meaningful information from vessel data is of utmost importance since it can reveal abnormal or illegal vessel activities in due time. Supervised deep learning approaches such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) require a large-scale annotated image dataset. Thus, semi-and unsupervised feature learning algorithms which learn image features from unlabelled data are able to mitigate this problem. To this end, in this work we propose a semi-supervised convolutional autoencoder (CAE) model for trajectory classification which is able to provide high-precision classification of mobility patterns. Experimental results demonstrated that the vessel activity classification performance can reach an F1-score of over 94%. © 2021 ACM.

Educational experiences using mobile devices are increasingly becoming popular and widespread. In this context, audiovisual elements are a common resource used in these initiatives but rarely as a core to direct the learning process. This paper studies the possibilities regarding the cohesion of video and learning elements so the resulting experiences are personalized to the user's typical routines for each device in terms of their use in mobility: customizing the design, the interaction protocols and the delivery of the formative material.

In this paper, we analyse the impact of the Contiki Operating System (OS), and its Carrier Sense Multiple Access and Collision Avoidance (CSMA-CA) implementation on an IEEE 802.15.4 node's throughput and wireless channel utilization. The analysis is based on Contiki's Rime networking protocol stack, and its target is to determine an upper bound for the stated metrics. We explain that in Contiki with CSMA-CA as a MAC layer protocol, a node's throughput is limited to 8.1 kbps, at maximum, even without power saving features. In order to maximize a node's transmission capability, we modified Contiki's CSMA-CA implementation. A number of simulations are performed, and it is observed that with our modifications node throughput reaches 45 kbps, at maximum. Simulation results for estimating the channel capacity with our modified CSMA-CA MAC layer protocol show that the average per-node delay is low when the offered data load remains below 100 kbps. For an offered load of 100 kbps, the channel drops almost 20% of packets. Going beyond 100 kbps results in large latencies and significant packet loss. Results presented in this paper can serve as basis for the available bandwidth estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), QoS-based routing, and design of congestion control algorithm.

Real-time multimedia applications require Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in terms of bounds on delay and packet loss along with soft bandwidth guarantees. The shared nature of the available bandwidth in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) causes interference. Interference combined with the overheads associated with a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol limit the available bandwidth in WMSNs. These overheads can result in congestion, even if transmission rates of nodes are well below the maximum bandwidth supported by an underlying communication technology. Congestion degrades the performance of admitted real-time multimedia flow(s). Therefore, in this paper, we experimentally derive the IEEE 802.15.4 channel capacity using an unslotted Carrier Sense Multiple Access Collision Avoidance (CSMA-CA) MAC protocol. Considering the experimental channel capacity estimation results, and the characteristics of real-time multimedia flows, we determine the threshold on bandwidth usage, so that the QoS requirements of real-time multimedia flows in terms of delay, bandwidth, and packet loss rate can be met. We performed several simulations, and results show that QoS requirements of applications are met operating within the bandwidth usage threshold determined in this paper. Simulation-based results further show that marginally exceeding the determined threshold value results in the performance degradation of at least one real-time multimedia flow.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) swarms, the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and 5G cellular networks unveil unprecedented ways of providing Internet connectivity to devices located in remote places where traditional network infrastructures are not viable. Furthermore, computation elements can be placed closer to the users to comply with the stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of IoT applications. However, these new paths open new challenges that need to be addressed. Offering connectivity to devices and people located in hard to reach places without been compliant with the QoS constraints imposed by the nature of the tasks that they must carry out would be a wasted effort. This paper focuses on the optimal placement of microservices in resource constrained networks augmented by UAV swarms with the objective of minimizing the latency of IoT applications. Although there are approaches based on heuristics and others based on Machine Learning techniques, they may end up leading to suboptimal solutions. To avoid that, a Mixed Integer Lineal Programming (MILP) formulation of the problem is provided and evaluated. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the model for deploying services with optimal latency in IoT scenarios with UAV-assisted wireless networks.
