Unwanted or unusual delay changes on an Internet path can happen, though possibly rarely. In order to understand and manage the network to potentially avoid such abrupt changes, it is crucial and challenging to locate which part of the path has contributed critically to such delay disruptions so that some corresponding actions may be taken. To tackle this challenge, the present paper proposes a simple and novel approach. The proposed approach relies only on end-to-end measurements of the path. Specifically, the end-to-end measurements include end-to-end delay measurement and traceroute *** the former, abrupt delay increases are flagged and a delay disruption matrix is constructed. With the latter, a routing matrix for the end-to-end path is formed. The key idea of the proposed approach is to link the routing matrix to the delay disruption matrix and make use of compressed sensing theory to infer critical hops in the routing matrix which contribute to the abrupt delay increases. To demonstrate its effectiveness, the proposed approach is applied to a real Internet path. The results are encouraging, showing that the proposed approach is able to locate the hops that have the most significant impact on or contribute the most to abrupt increases on the end-to-end delay of the measured Internet path.

With the increasing tendency on data rates in forthcoming communication networks, availability is a crucial aspect to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The possibility of predicting the lifetime of networking hardware can be a key to improve the overall network QoS. This paper proposes a generic Machine Learning (ML) based framework that learns how to mimic the mathematical model behind the lifetime of network line cards. Results show that a good precision (85%) and recall (close to 100%) on the estimation can be achieved regardless the type of line cards the network is composed of.

This work is focused on achieving large performance gains in wireless networks by means of distributed or cooperative Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems. In this contribution, it is studied in detail the correlation of different Cooperative MIMO systems, based on measuring these systems on a reverberation chamber. Cooperative systems with more than 10 antennas are studied in detail. These results show the impact of these new propagation channels on the 5th generation mobile communication systems, which will be of importance for the development and characterization of such systems. In this new systems power imbalance acquires more importance.

Estimating the available bandwidth in IEEE 802.15.4-based networks is a difficult and challenging task due to the shared nature of the wireless communication medium. The MAC layer decides the sharing of a communication medium, therefore the MAC layer dictates the amount of bandwidth available to a node. Some recent solutions consider the impact of the MAC layer back-off due to collision and transmitter and receiver non-synchronization on the available bandwidth, Available Bandwidth Estimation (ABE) is one such example. None of the existing solutions pro-actively consider the impact of additional overhead of an unslotted Carrier Sense Multiple Access Collision Avoidance (CSMA-CA) protocol with an increased data load inside a network on the available bandwidth. Therefore the amount of reported available bandwidth is not fully available to a node, hence this can result in poor admission decisions. In this paper, we show that increasing data load inside the IEEE 802.15.4-based network increases MAC layer overhead. Afterwards, we enhance the ABE bandwidth estimation and admission control algorithms so that they pro-actively consider the additional MAC layer overhead associated with an increased data load inside a network. We performed a number of simulations, and our simulation results show that the proposed proactive ABE method performs better than the original ABE method.

In this paper, we present an available-bandwidth-based proactive routing protocol for IEEE 802.15.4-based single-sink and multi-sink ad-hoc networks. The available-bandwidth-based proactive routing protocol maintains the best forwarding path in terms of the end-to-end available bandwidth towards each sink node present in a network. Moreover, a node can maintain more than one data forwarding path towards the same sink node. We performed extensive simulations, and compared our proactive routing protocol with a state-of-the-art opportunistic routing protocol. The simulation results demonstrate that the opportunistic routing protocol can distribute data load unevenly (in case of multiple sink nodes), hence results in high end-to-end delay and low Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR). In case of our proactive routing protocol, selecting forwarding paths by only considering the end-to-end available bandwidth invariably results in lengthy data forwarding paths. Lengthy data forwarding paths results in higher intra-flow contention, hence PDR and end-to-end delay are impacted. One of the simulation scenarios, using multiple sink nodes, demonstrates that in case of our proactive routing protocol, carefully selecting the data forwarding path(s) that are not too long compared to the shortest available data forwarding path(s), but have better end-to-end available bandwidth significantly improves the performance of the proactive routing protocol. Therefore, our results hint that, in general, trading off end-to-end available bandwidth and the length of a data forwarding path may improve end-to-end PDR and delay.

Integration of trust in routing mechanisms already prevalent in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has become an interesting research area of late. Several methods exist for the assignment of trust to the nodes present in a WSN. However the real challenge lies in proper integration of this trust to an existing routing protocol for the synthesis of a trust-aware routing algorithm. In this paper we try to take the help of Geometrical Mean based indirect trust evaluation mechanism for calculation of trust of individual nodes and thereby use the calculated trusts for determination of the different route trusts (RTs). We present a link state routing protocol based only on these indirect trusts which forms the routes and finds the best trustworthy route among them by comparing the values of all the calculated route trusts as for each route present in the network. We have developed three algorithms related to this and have shown their merits. Finally, we compare our work with similar trust integrated routing protocols and show its advantages over them. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we present BEAR; a bandwidth estimation-based admission control and routing protocol for IEEE 802.15.4-based networks. The purpose of BEAR is to support real-time multimedia flows in IEEE 802.15.4-based networks by satisfying their end-to-end bandwidth requirements. BEAR combines a novel bandwidth estimation approach, admission control, and routing. BEAR uses a measurement-based bandwidth estimation algorithm that combines nodes' transmission rate, and actual MAC layer overhead to estimate the available bandwidth. The available bandwidth information is used as input to the admission control protocol, and BEAR proposes algorithms to estimate a flow's contention, intra-flow contention, and additional MAC layer overhead with an increased data load inside a network. Moreover, BEAR proposes that the available bandwidth information can be used as a routing metric to select forwarding path(s) that can offer better end-to-end available bandwidth. BEAR is a comprehensive framework to support realtime multimedia applications in IEEE 802.155.4-based networks.

In this paper, we compare two approaches for the reproduction and generalization of human-like movements by an upper-body humanoid robot. The specific purpose is to gain new insights into a key component of imitation learning: the ability to generalize from very few examples. In line with this, we aim to accurately portray the characteristics and generalization performance of those approaches based on the paradigm of motion primitives. Specifically, we focus on two established techniques, the dynamic motion primitives (DMP) and the principal component analysis (PCA). First, we recorded demonstrations from human subjects executing a reaching task in order to create a database of reaching motions. Then, the multiple demonstrations are mapped to an upper-body humanoid robot through an inverse kinematics algorithm that attempts to track the kinematics of the movement of human arms. Finally, the generalization performance is evaluated and the feasibility of the two approaches is discussed for this study of reaching movements.

This paper addresses the problem of robust filtering for uncertain linear signal models affected by time delays in the state. Uncertainty is structured and the model is assumed to lie in a given bounded polyhedral set. The main innovation is the use of a nonrational filter, that is, a filter that also contains delays in the filter state. Robust filtering performance is evaluated using the H/sub 2/ or the H/sub /spl infin// norm. The performance conditions are delay independent, and provide convex filtering design problems, which are convex optimization problems with linear matrix inequalities constraints.
