Spain's degree course 'Graduate in Industrial Design and Product Development Technical engineering' (Spanish acronym: GITDI) has a strong multidisciplinary character. The curriculum requires students to acquire knowledge of very different disciplines and materials - Mechanics, Electronics, etc. This variety means that, in some areas, not enough depth is gone into for the students to gain sufficient competence to incorporate certain technologies into their designs. In the case of Electronics, they can only take a single elective 6-credit course throughout the curriculum. It is shown here how rapid prototyping tools with microcontrollers like 'Arduino' and 'mbed' constitute, for their ease of use and intuitive programming and design, a basic element for students to quickly and with little prior knowledge acquire the competence sufficient to create new products with some level of technology. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper describes a scheme for mapping the backpropagation algorithm onto an MIMD computer with 2D-torus network. We propose a new strategy that allows arbitrary assignment of processors to the multiple degrees of backpropagation parallelism (training set parallelism, pipelining and node parallelism). Thus, the method allows a flexible mapping that fits well to various neural network applications. Moreover, we consider the effect of the weight update interval on the number of iterations required for convergence. The results from implementations on a Fujitsu AP1000 show that it may be beneficial to make a mapping involving contention in the communication network. Further, even though the convergence in number of iterations is slower for parallel implementations, compared to a serial program, parallel processing can be a means of achieving considerable speed-up.

In recent years, the impressive growth of new wireless technologies, together with the appearance of new requirements in applications and services, is progressively changing the use of networks. Due to the high mobility required, the network must adapt to the infrastructure to meet the demands of the users. As a result, service providers currently have to over-provision network capacity, which is costly. In addition, considering efficient resource planning in advance involves a lot of labor-intensive efforts. Consequently, network usage analysis is a very useful tool that allows network administrators to find patterns and anomalies. Whilst pattern detection provides administrators the ability to define the infrastructure, anomaly detection provides rich and valuable information for certain applications, for example, to avoid network saturation in urban areas during peak hours. This article proposes a new methodology based on orthogonal projections over Call Detail Records (CDR) for anomaly detection to help in the dynamic management of the network in an urban area. The method is evaluated in a real scenario provided by an Italian telecommunications operator, considering different locations in the Milan metropolitan area, differentiated by the geographic resolution of the data, reaching F1 scores above 0.8. In addition, a new ground truth is presented, hoping it will become a reference data set for the community, in the form of a set of locations that have been corroborated for use in evaluating anomaly detection techniques. © 2023, The Author(s).

The prediction of gene function from genome sequences is one of the main issues in Bioinformatics. Most computational approaches are based on the similarity between sequences to infer gene function. However, the availability of several fully sequenced genomes has enabled alternative approaches, such as phylogenetic profiles. Phylogenetic profiles are vectors which indicate the presence or absence of a gene in other genomes. The main concept of phylogenetic profiles is that proteins participating in a common structural complex or metabolic pathway are likely to evolve in a correlated fashion. In this paper, a multi level clustering algorithm of phylogenetic profiles is presented, which aims to detect inter- and intra-genome gene clusters.

Nowadays, cloud computing has become a key paradigm in distributed applications thanks to the rise of low-power Internet-connected devices as commonplace. However, stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements are complicated to achieve when a pure cloud computing paradigm is applied, due to the physical distance between end devices and cloud servers. This motivated the appearance of fog computing, a paradigm that adds computation and storage resources, named fog nodes, closer to the end devices in order to reduce response time and latency. However, the placement of fog nodes, as well as the relative placement of the end devices each fog node serves, can affect the QoS obtained. This can be crucial to those services that have stringent QoS requirements. In this work, we analyze the effects that different placements of fog nodes have on QoS and present the problem of placing fog nodes to obtain an optimal QoS, with a focus on the Industrial Internet of Things domain because of its strict QoS requirements. We conclude that an optimized placement of the fog nodes can minimize latency to support the QoS requirements of IIoT applications.

Printed electronics (PE) is an additive fabrication technology for manufacturing electronic circuits which not only allows for a highly flexible printing of arbitrary circuit patterns, but also produce soft, non-Toxic, and degradable electronics at an extremely low cost. These properties are unmatched by silicon based electronics, making PE an enabler of new application domains, e.g., fast moving consumer goods, wearables, and disposable healthcare devices. A particularly promising class of circuits in this technology is the printed analog neuromorphic circuits, offering efficient and highly tailored computational functionalities. In this work, we leverage the highly flexible fabrication process of PE to address the bottleneck of PE, i.e., the large feature sizes and low device counts. This issue is crucial, as it impairs the integration of printed circuits into target applications with limited footprint, such as smart band aids. We also propose an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to improve the circuit compactness through circuit architecture optimization. As baseline, we compare the proposed EA method with a state-of-The-Art pruning method and a modified area-Aware pruning method. All of them are able to optimize circuit architecture alongside the component values of printed neuromorphic circuits. Experimental simulation reveals that the proposed EA approach can effectively achieve compact circuits and outperform the pruning method by 3.1× lower area with no loss of accuracy. As a byproduct, the power is reduced by 3.0×, paving the way to energy-harvested printed systems. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

In this work we provide numerical results concerning a silicon-on-insulator photonic neuromorphic circuit configured as a physical unclonable function. The proposed scheme is enhanced with the capability to be operated as an unconventional deterministic pseudo-random number generator, suitable for cryptographic applications that alleviates the need for key storage in non-volatile digital media. The proposed photonic neuromorphic scheme is able to offer NIST test compatible numbers with an extremely low false positive/negative probability below 10-14. The proposed scheme offers multi-functional capabilities due to the fact that it can be simultaneously used as an integrated photonic accelerator for machine-learning applications and as a hardware root of trust. The pervasive presence of the Internet results in an increasing number of people and systems interacting with each other. However, since each system only captures its own representation of reality, the information of the involved actors is scattered and even duplicated. This scattering generates problems by itself since only a small fragmented vision of the actors’ reality is available for each system. At the same time, the duplication of information in different systems can lead to inconsistencies that impede the correct integration of different systems. In this paper, we present an architecture based on the use of an upper blockchain in charge of federating a set of lower-level blockchains. This way, actor-centered data integration is achieved, offering a single, global vision of the dispersed information of each actor. This solution, called FedBlocks, relies on the blockchains’ federation concept where all interconnected systems are communicated and can share authorized data of their actors, providing a benefit for these systems and for the actors themselves. The proposed implementation has been successfully tested integrating 5689 records from 50 different institutions, belonging to 1156 actors.

The Internet of Things has brought digitalization to intensive domains through the automation of their real-world processes. However, the criticality of these processes is reflected in high Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for the application to work properly. Moreover, business-level QoS, such as the operational cost, are also key to the feasibility of these applications. This QoS depends on three, closely-related dimensions: the application software, the computing devices and the communication network, which provide high flexibility to obtain different performances at different costs. Thus, to achieve optimal QoS in these scenarios, the application, computing and networking dimensions must be optimized, considering their crucial interplay in a joint effort. Furthermore, this solution must allow multi-objective optimization, finding the optimal trade-off between operational cost and application performance. In this paper, we present Multi-Objective SDN Fog Optimization (MO-SFO), a holistic framework that allows for the optimization of both the response time and the deployment cost. MO-SFO is evaluated over an emulated smart city case study, showing the cost and performance trade-off achieved in different topologies.

Data mining has proven a successful gateway for discovering useful knowledge and for enhancing business intelligence in a range of application fields. Incorporating this knowledge into already deployed applications, though, is highly impractical, since it requires reconfigurable software architectures, as well as human expert consulting. In an attempt to overcome this deficiency, we have developed agent academy, an integrated development framework that supports both design and control of multiagent systems (MAS), as well as agent training. We define agent training as the automated incorporation of logic structures generated through data mining into the agents of the system. The increased flexibility and cooperation primitives of MAS, augmented with the training and retraining capabilities of agent academy, provide a powerful means for the dynamic exploitation of data mining extracted knowledge. In this paper, we present the methodology and tools for agent retraining. Through experimental results with the agent academy platform, we demonstrate how the extracted knowledge can be formulated and how retraining can lead to the improvement - in the long run - of agent intelligence.
