Data Centre Networks (DCNs) handle large volumes of data transmission that can consume a lot of bandwidth in short bursts or over prolonged periods of time. One class of traffic that constantly poses a challenge is Heavy-Hitter (HH) flows - large-volume flows that consume considerably more network resources than other flows combined. The identification of such flows is critical to prevent network congestion and overall network performance degradation. Most of the existing methods to identify HHs are based on thresholds, i.e., if the flow exceeds a predefined threshold, it will be marked as a HH; otherwise, it will be classified as a non-HH. However, these approaches present two significant issues. First, there is no consistent and accepted threshold that would reliably classify flows. Second, the existing threshold approaches use counters (duration, packets, and bytes); thus their accuracy depends on how complete the flow information is. In this paper, we address those issues using per-flow packet size distribution which can capture the behaviour and dynamics of network traffic flow more accurately than the counters in the early stage of the flow. We then propose the use of the template matching technique to identify HHs and achieved a classification accuracy of 96% using only the first 14 packets of a flow.

While there are many aspect-oriented modeling (AOM) approaches, from requirements to low-level design, it is still difficult to compare them and know under which conditions different approaches are most applicable. This comparison, however, is crucially important to unify existing AOM and more traditional object-oriented modeling (OOM) approaches and to generalize individual approaches into a comprehensive end-to-end method. Such a method does not yet exist. This paper reports on work done at the inaugural Comparing Modeling Approaches (CMA) workshop towards the goal of identifying potential comprehensive methodologies: (i) a common, focused case study for six modeling approaches, (ii) a set of criteria applied to each of the six approaches, and (iii) the assessment results. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

For very large document collections or high volume streams of documents, finding relevant documents is a major information filtering problem. A major aid to information retrieval systems produces a word frequency measure estimated from some important parts of the document using neural network approaches. In this paper a fuzzy logic technique and as its simplified case a neural network algorithm will be proposed for this task. The comparison of these two and an alternative neural network algorithm will also be discussed.

In the rapidly growing interest in digital identity management, there is an important shift toward adopting verifiable credentials, often based on blockchain technology. This transition highlights a growing interest in the concept of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), a paradigm that empowers individuals with control over their own digital identities through the use of verifiable credentials. This paper introduces a novel access control framework that leverages the principles of SelfSovereign Identity to significantly enhance the security of system access based on the users' credentials. By integrating the decentralized and user-centric nature of SSI, our proposed framework aims to address existing vulnerabilities in traditional access control systems. It provides a robust, scalable, and controlled mechanism that ensures higher levels of trust and security in digital interactions. This approach aligns with the broader digital identity trends favoring transparency, user autonomy, and trust. © 2024 IEEE.

The delivery of IP packets to a set of elements lying within a designated geographical area, also known as geocasting, is an important aspect in vehicular networks. Geocast messages can be used, for instance, to warn drivers about road conditions (e.g., weather hazards) and therefore prevent accidents. In order for geocasting to work on the Internet, IP addresses must be associated with geographical coordinates, either temporary (vehicles in transit on a road) or permanently (roadside units along the road). However, finding IP nodes within specified geographical areas is still an open issue, even though several proposals have been made. The objective of this paper is to introduce a novel proposal to extend DNS capabilities in order to support geocast.

This paper deals with approximate value iteration (AVI) algorithms applied to discounted dynamic (DP) programming problems. The so-called Bellman residual is shown to be convex in the Banach space of candidate solutions to the DP problem. This fact motivates the introduction of an AVI algorithm with local search that seeks an approximate solution in a lower dimensional space called approximation architecture. The optimality of a point in the approximation architecture is characterized by means of convex optimization concepts and necessary and sufficient conditions to global optimality are derived. To illustrate the method, two examples are presented which were previously explored in the literature.

Transferring skills from humans to robots is an appealing way for teaching artificial systems to perform a variety of different tasks. In this context, imitation learning appears as an important approach for teaching robots due to the generation of human-like movements and the ease of teaching new tasks. This paper addresses the use of a Kinect-based human motion capture system and the reproduction of arm movements in an upper-body humanoid robot. The objectives are threefold: (1) to deal with the lack of a kinematics model that assure coherence in the recorded 3D human poses; (2) to explore the inclusion of a shoulder complex based on a parallel mechanism; and (3) to demonstrate and evaluate how two robot models can be used to reproduce the human demonstrations. Several experimental results are included showing the upper-limb reproduction of human arm movements.

In this paper, we study the dynamic formation of transients when plane waves impinge on a dispersive slab that abruptly changes its electrical properties in time. The time-varying slab alternates between air and metal-like states, whose frequency dispersion is described by the Drude model. It is shown how the physics of this complex system can be well described with the joint combination of two terms: one associated with temporal refractions and the other associated with spatial refractions. To test the validity of the approach, some analytical results are compared with a self-implemented finite-difference time-domain method. Results show how the transients that occur after the abrupt temporal changes can shape the overall steady-state response of the space-time system. In fact, far from always being detrimental, these transient states can be conveniently used to perform frequency conversion or to amplify or attenuate the electromagnetic fields.

In recent years, the field of autonomous driving has witnessed remarkable advancements, driven by the integration of a multitude of sensors, including cameras and LiDAR systems, in different prototypes. However, with the proliferation of sensor data comes the pressing need for more sophisticated information processing techniques. This research paper introduces a novel modification to an object detection network that uses camera and lidar information, incorporating an additional branch designed for the task of re-identifying objects across adjacent cameras within the same vehicle while elevating the quality of the baseline 3D object detection outcomes. The proposed methodology employs a two-step detection pipeline: initially, an object detection network is employed, followed by a 3D box estimator that operates on the filtered point cloud generated from the network's detections. Extensive experimental evaluations encompassing both 2D and 3D domains validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the results underscore the superiority of this method over traditional Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) techniques, with an improvement of more than 5% in the car category in the overlapping areas. A Simple yet Effective Greedy Evolutionary Strategy for RNA Design

RNA design, also known as the RNA inverse folding problem, involves discovering a nucleotide sequence that folds into a target structure. This problem has been addressed from a wide number of approaches, improving the ability to solve it in a reasonable time over time. Despite all these efforts, today no method has completely solved the problem. We present GREED-RNA, a new RNA design algorithm, based on a simple greedy evolutionary strategy. The main feature is the use of several objective functions (Base-pair distance, Hamming distance, probability over ensemble, partition function, ensemble defect and GC-content) to select the best solution in each iteration, changing their weight according to the problem-solving conditions. The performance of GREED-RNA was tested using the Eterna100 benchmark, widely used in this area and never fully solved by any method. In addition, a comparative analysis against several published RNA design methods considering three metrics (solved structures, success rate and execution time), allowed us to verify that GREED-RNA performs better than previously developed methods, thus successfully improving the current ability to solve this problem. This tool also allows users to select a range within which the GC-content of the solution sequences must fall.
