The popularity of Online Social Networks (OSNs) has attracted great research interests in different fields. In Economics, researchers use game theory to analyze the mechanism of network formation, which is called Network Formation Game. While in computer science, much effort has been done in building machine learning models to predict future or missing links. However, there are few works considering how to combine game theoretic analysis and machine learning models. Therefore, in this paper, we study the problem of Exploiting Game Theoretic Analysis for Link Recommendation in Social Networks. Our goal is to improve link recommendation accuracy via leveraging the power of Network Formation Games into machine learning models. We present two different approaches to solve this problem. First, we propose a three-phase method that straightforwardly combines game theoretic analysis with machine learning models. Second, we develop a unified model, BPRLGT, that incorporates Network Formation Game into a Bayesian ranking framework for link recommendation. Specifically, BPRLGT takes advantage of network topology and we design a game theoretic sampling approach to improve its training process. The experiments are conducted on four real world datasets and the results on all datasets demonstrate that both our proposed three-phase method and the unified ranking model outperform the baseline methods. © 2015 ACM.

Given two sets of vectors, A = {a1→, . . . , am→} and B = {b1→, . . . , bn→}, our problem is to find the top-t dot products, i.e., the largest |ai→ · bj→| among all possible pairs. This is a fundamental mathematical problem that appears in numerous data applications involving similarity search, link prediction, and collaborative filtering. We propose a sampling-based approach that avoids direct computation of all mn dot products. We select diamonds (i.e., four-cycles) from the weighted tripartite representation of A and B. The probability of selecting a diamond corresponding to pair (i, j) is proportional to (ai→ · bj→)2, amplifying the focus on the largest-magnitude entries. Experimental results indicate that diamond sampling is orders of magnitude faster than direct computation and requires far fewer samples than any competing approach. We also apply diamond sampling to the special case of maximum inner product search, and get significantly better results than the state-of-theart hashing methods.

Athletes and their coaches aim for enhancing the sports performance. Collecting data from athletes, transforming them into useful information related to their sports performance (e.g., their type of gait), and transmitting the information to the coaches supports the enhancement. The types of gait standing, walking, and running were often examined. Lack of research remains for the two types of running, jogging and sprinting. In this work, standing, walking, jogging, and sprinting were classified with a single inertial-magnetic measurement unit that was placed at a novel position at the trunk. A comparison was made between classification systems using different combinations of accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer data as well as different classifiers (Naïve Bayes, k-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, Adaptive Boosting). After collecting data from 15 male subjects, the data were preprocessed, features were extracted and selected, and the data were classified. All classification systems were successful. With a mean true positive rate of 95.68% ±1.80%, the classification system using accelerometer and gyroscope data as well as the Naïve Bayes classifier performed best. The classification system can be used for applications in sport and sports performance analysis in particular.

The virtualization technology has been widely used in today's doud computing datacenters. With the virtualization technology, each physical machine in a datacenter can be logically divided into several virtual machines, on which different types of software services can host. However, many reasons may decrease the availability of the whole system. For example, a failed physical machine automatically fails all virtual machines on the physical machine, and consequently fails every software service on the virtual machines. It is difficult to detect failures efficiently in a general-purpose computer architecture because the hardware cannot provide enough information for fast failure detection. On the contrary, the ATCA (Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture) physical machines provide high hardware availability, and support IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) that can quickly detect the hardware status. In this paper, we developed a novel failure model and designed a symmetric fault-tolerant mechanism using ATCA physical machines and KVM to provide a solution for high system availability. The proposed fault-tolerant mechanism divides ATCA physical machines into pairs, such that each machine of a pair supports fault tolerance for each other. Once a failure is detected in the physical machine layer or the virtualization layer, the failed virtual machines are then recovered on the other physical machine. We have compared the proposed fault-tolerance mechanism with another prior VM-based fault-tolerance tool. The results show that the proposed mechanism significantly reduces the service downtime. That is, it provides better system availability for software services running on the virtual machines.

Axle bearing damage with possible catastrophic failures can cause severe disruptions or even dangerous derailments, potentially causing loss of human life and leading to significant costs for railway infrastructure managers and rolling stock operators. Consequently the axle bearing damage process has safety and economic implications on the exploitation of railways systems. Therefore it has been the object of intense attention by railway authorities as proved by the selection of this topic by the European Commission in calls for research proposals. The MAXBE Project ( http://***/ ), a EU-funded project, appears in this context and its main goal is to develop and to demonstrate innovative and efficient technologies which can be used for the onboard and wayside condition monitoring of axle bearings. The MAXBE (interoperable monitoring, diagnosis and maintenance strategies for axle bearings) project focuses on detecting axle bearing failure modes at an early stage by combining new and existing monitoring techniques and on characterizing the axle bearing degradation process. The consortium for the MAXBE project comprises 18 partners from 8 member states, representing operators, railway administrations, axle bearing manufactures, key players in the railway community and experts in the field of monitoring, maintenance and rolling stock. The University of Porto is coordinating this research project that kicked-off in November 2012 and it is completed on October 2015. Both on-board and wayside systems are explored in the project since there is a need for defining the requirement for the onboard equipment and the range of working temperatures of the axle bearing for the wayside systems. The developed monitoring systems consider strain gauges, high frequency accelerometers, temperature sensors and acoustic emission. Information management and related applications are being vigorously researched and developed. According to IDC research reports, the global market for information management is forecasted to grow by 30 percent annually (from a value of 8 billion US dollars in 2012, to a forecasted 24 billion US dollar value in 2016). Both reports explicitly identify the significant growth in the importance of information management and related services in the future. This paper will discuss and analyze our development in topic-specific applications, namely the collection, access, and enrichment of massive data. Through the development of adaptive file access technology and the combination of distributed storage (i.e. Hive, HBase, etc.) with In-Memory algorithmic technologies, we will be able to have the system adjust data storage policies and increase efficiency through the identification of data types and some algorithmic properties. Based on the virtual machine migration technology, we utilize the mass data processing workload to dynamically migrate the virtual computing node. This can automatically adjust virtual resources to achieve outstanding calculation and localization of data through parallel execution of multiple mass data management processes, and maximize massive data processing efficiency. In the future we plan to progressively seek potential clients and partners, from which we will tailor a variety of field tests according to our clients' needs. And through this process, is where we will gradually achieve technical and application verifications.

The data explosion brings several difficult challenges. One of critical and fundamental challenges is to have a storage infrastructure that can store and manage such voluminous information to meet business goals, such as cost, performance, reliability, and availability. To reduce the storage cost and improve data access performance, it is typically required a storage management solution based on Information Lifecycle Management (ILM). In this work, we propose a design of ILM system for managing a tiered storage using pNFS(Parallel NFS) file system. pNFS is an emerging NFSv4 extension that bypasses the server bottleneck by enabling direct access to storage by NFSv4 clients. Furthermore, because pNFS separates control and data flows, it enables a software-defined storage architecture. This paper describes our system design and shows the preliminary performance results in this work as a future roadmap to achieve our goal.

Tasks such as question answering and semantic search are dependent on the ability of querying and reasoning over large-scale commonsense knowledge bases (KBs). However, dealing with commonsense data demands coping with problems such as the increase in schema complexity, semantic inconsistency, incompleteness and scalability. This paper proposes a selective graph navigation mechanism based on a distributional relational semantic model which can be applied to querying and reasoning over heterogeneous knowledge bases (KBs). The approach can be used for approximative reasoning, querying and associational knowledge discovery. In this paper we focus on commonsense reasoning as the main motivational scenario for the approach. The approach focuses on addressing the following problems: (i) providing a semantic selection mechanism for facts which are relevant and meaningful in a specific reasoning and querying context and (ii) allowing coping with information incompleteness in large KBs. The approach is evaluated using ConceptNet as a commonsense KB, and achieved high selectivity, high selectivity scalability and high accuracy in the selection of meaningful navigational paths. Distributional semantics is also used as a principled mechanism to cope with information incompleteness. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
