Seismic response analysis is carried out for a base-isolated frame. The RC-frame members as well as the rubber bearings are discretized into hexahedral finite elements. The material properties of rubber are represented by the Ogden model, and the frame is assumed to remain in elastic range. The seismic response analysis of the frame, which has more than 3 million degrees of freedom is carried out using the E-Simulator, which is under development at E-Defense, Japan, based on a software package called ADVENTURECluster. It is shown that the global and local responses can be simultaneously evaluated through a high-precision finite element analysis.

This paper demonstrates a approach to design the field programmable CMOS operational transresistance amplifier. All the MOSFETs are replaced by the floating gate MOSFETs to make the OTRA design programmable. The charge at the floating gate can be programmed after fabrication, based on Hot-e-injection and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling techniques. This programming charge at floating gate results in threshold voltage variation in these MOSFETs, which in turn can modify circuit's specifications. The high frequency small signal analysis of the design is prepared and specifications of the design are rederived in terms of threshold voltages of the MOSFETs. The expressions of output voltage, transresistance, input impedance, output impedance and offsets are derived in terms of threshold voltages of respective MOSFETs. In order to achieve circuits AC and DC characteristics, the circuit is simulated using BSIM3 level49 MOSFET models in T-spice 0.35um CMOS process. The simulated results shows 13 bit programming precision in transresistance, input impedance, output impedance, Temperature stability and dc offsets with respect to threshold voltage of respective MOSFETs.

Dynamic collapse analyses of a 4-story steel building frame modeled by solid elements are performed using the E-Simulator, which is a parallel finite element analysis software package for civil and building structures. Code verification, calculation verification, and validation of the numerical codes (V&V) are conducted by comparing the results obtained by the E-Simulator, those obtained by a beam element analysis code, and the experimental results obtained by the 3-D full-scale earthquake testing facility, the E-Defense at NIED. The seismic response analyses under 60% or 100% of the JR Takatori seismic wave of the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake are performed. The shear forces and interstory drift angles of the 1st story obtained by the E-Simulator simulation and the E-Defense full-scale test have good agreement. Both response of the whole frame and local deformation due to plastic buckling are simulated in the analysis using the E-Simulator.

A lot of manufacturers tend to enhance the management efficacy and reduce the management costs by investing large resources in the research and development of RFID. For petrochemical industry, an effective, reliable, and secure patrol management system is primary. Nevertheless, traditional patrol management focuses on labor patrol that the field staff master in the corrosion, leakage, and pipe aging of production equipment. Although equipment inspection and patrol items are scheduled every day, some problems still need to be overcome. After completing traditional patrol tasks, extra time and manpower are required for organizing the patrol records and filling them into electronic document. In the process, it is likely to key in wrong data because of the numerous patrol items. Apparently, without systematic management, supervisors and shift leaders can hardly find out data errors and analyze the abundant data for complete risk evaluation and process security improvement. An RFID-based patrol management system suitable for petrochemical industry is proposed in this study. The system corresponds to the field environment requirements and regulations for petrochemical plants, integrates operation procedure and information procedure, and evaluates and includes various dimensions and variables through interviews and technological analyses to enhance the process security. Active processing equipment monitoring could enhance the preventive maintenance efficiency and promote the production capacity and industrial competitiveness.

Traditional monitoring systems are based on C/S mode because desktop software still has inherent advantages though desktop software is replaced by web applications rapidly in many fields. Meanwhile, traditional monitoring systems use relational database as data source, however, relational database lacks the ability to process influx of queries per second. The use of virtual cluster for High Performance Computing (HPC) work has a great benefit of hiding the complexity of physical infrastructure while providing a familiar HPC environment for users. Nevertheless, setting up one is still a challenging task for most users. In addition, the ability to span a virtual cluster across a multi-site cloud can even create a great potential for users to harness a much higher processing power from the cloud. In this paper, the development of a multi-site virtual cluster cloud is presented. This is done by providing the cloud infrastructures tailored specifically for virtual cluster deployment along with related utilities such as web-interface monitor and command line tools. To realize this infrastructure, an overlay network is created using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology to merge every site into a single broadcast domain. Moreover, a Multi-tier VPN network topology is proposed to enhance the communication performance among the multi-site cloud. A smart virtual machine scheduling mechanism is introduced to reduce performance degradation caused by network delays. The experimental results show that the virtual cluster works well with highly parallel task with low communication among task. Thus, this technology can be used to support many classes of important HPC applications.

Recently, graphics processing units (GPUs) have opened up new opportunities for speeding up general-purpose parallel applications due to their massive computational power and up to hundreds of thousands of threads enabled by programming models such as CUDA. However, due to the serial nature of existing micro-architecture simulators, these massively parallel architectures and workloads need to be simulated sequentially. As a result, simulating GPGPU architectures with typical benchmarks and input data sets is extremely time-consuming. This paper addresses the GPGPU architecture simulation challenge by generating miniature, yet representative GPGPU kernels. We first summarize the static characteristics of an existing GPGPU kernel in a profile, and analyze its dynamic behavior using the novel concept of the divergence flow statistics graph (DFSG). We subsequently use a GPGPU kernel synthesizing framework to generate a miniature proxy of the original kernel, which can reduce simulation time significantly. The key idea is to reduce the number of simulated instructions by decreasing per-thread iteration counts of loops. Our experimental results show that our approach can accelerate GPGPU architecture simulation by a factor of 88X on average and up to 589X with an average IPC relative error of 5.6%.

This paper presents the design and implementation of distributed arithmetic (DA) architectures of three-dimensional (3-D) Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) with hybrid method for medical image compression. Due to the separability property of the multi-dimensional Haar and Daubechies, the proposed architecture has been implemented using a cascade of three N-point one-dimensional (1-D) Haar/Daubechies and two transpose memories for a 3-D volume of N×N×N, suitable for 3-D medical imaging applications. The architectures were synthesised using VHDL and G-code and implemented on field programmable gate array (FPGA) single board RIO (sbRIO-9632) with Spartan-3 (XC3S2000). Experimental results and an analysis of the area, power consumption, maximum frequency, latency, throughput as well as the subjective test are discussed in this paper.

Eddy current (EC) methods of nondestructive evaluation are used extensively in steam generator tube inspection in nuclear power plants. With advances in technology, new sensor designs are being proposed for improving data acquisition and defect detection. Limitations associated with manual analysis of the large volume of EC data have led to the development of automated data analysis. In this paper, we present statistical models for automated analysis of the complex array probe data. The EC data is modeled as independent random ariables with identical distribution and the statistical parameters of the two class problem are estimated using Maximum Likelihood (ML) method. Defect identification in the noisy EC data is assessed using minimum error rate (MER) detection rule. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) generated for in-service steam generator tubes are used to assess the model performance. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

We describe a computational model for studying the complexity of self-assembled structures with active molecular components. Our model captures notions of growth and movement ubiquitous in biological systems. The model is inspired by biology's fantastic ability to assemble biomolecules that form systems with complicated structure and dynamics, from molecular motors that walk on rigid tracks and proteins that dynamically alter the structure of the cell during mitosis, to embryonic development where large scale complicated organisms efficiently grow from a single cell. Using this active self-assembly model, we show how to efficiently self-assemble shapes and patterns from simple monomers. For example we show how to grow a line of monomers in time and number of monomer states that is merely logarithmic in its length. Our main results show how to grow arbitrary connected two-dimensional geometric shapes and patterns in expected time polylogarithmic in the size of the shape plus roughly the time required to run a Turing machine deciding whether or not a given pixel is in the shape. We do this while keeping the number of monomer types logarithmic in shape size, plus monomers required by the Kolmogorov complexity of the shape or pattern. This work thus highlights the fundamental efficiency advantage of active self-assembly over passive self-assembly and motivates experimental effort to construct self-assembly systems with active molecular components. © 2013 Authors.
