This paper presents an approach for the transient simulation of I/O buffers described by IBIS models. Using the latency insertion method a formulation can be obtained for the transient behavior of IBIS models and external circuitry. The formulation offers better convergence than traditional Newton-Raphson methods and is therefore more robust. Several computer simulations are performed to validate the method. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper reflects upon an ontological solution for the control of the run-time business transactions guided by the concepts of accountability, authority, competency, delegation and responsibility. In this paper, control is considered as the continuous alignment problem between the ex-ante organizational models and the ex-post transactional acts that are performed by the actors in the operation. Control is required because the definition of models establishes the design freedom restrictions of the organization but per se does not guarantee that the actors perform accordingly with them. The conceptual solution for this problem consists in a two competency layer control schema that governs the ex-post transactional acts against the ex-ante models, using the peripheral and central nervous system metaphor. Five constructional concerns are identified to enforce control in organizations: (i) observation, (ii) actuation, (iii) knowledge regarding the dynamics of the system to be controlled, (iv) references specification and (v) controller including the business rules definition. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

User Experience (UX) is an emerging research area pertaining to as well as extending beyond the traditional usability. Issues in the realm of usability may be amplified in UX because of its larger scope. Four key non-orthogonal issues are: definition, modeling, method selection, and interplay between evaluation and development. Leveraging the legacy of a series of earlier workshops, I-UxSED 2012 aims to develop a deeper understanding of how evaluation feedback shapes software development, especially when experiential qualities such as fun, trust, aesthetic values are concerned. Is feedback on these fuzzy qualities less useful for problem prioritization or less persuasive for problem fixing? This and other challenging questions will be explored in I-UxSED 2012 that brings together researchers and practitioners from two communities - HCI and Software engineering.

This paper deals with the implementation of a Nonlinear Interference Suppressor (NIS) into a wireless LTE transceiver. This within the context of high energy efficient multi-standard transceivers controlled by a cognitive radio platform. In multimode transceivers, the transmitter for one communication standard may induce a large interferer in the receiver for another standard. To linearly suppress this interferer, which can be several orders of magnitude larger than the desired received signal, the receiver should have a very large linear dynamic range, resulting in excessive power consumption. For this reason, we consider the NIS, a closed-loop tuning method that exploits the locally available interference as side information. The wireless LTE transceiver model, includes all the baseband signal treatment blocks and the RF front-end of a low IF direct conversion receiver architecture. A mobile WiMAX signal is considered as the interference signal at the receiver. The obtained symbol error rate (SER) is observed for different system configurations. Matlab simulation results in this practical scenario show that the NIS can strongly suppress the interferer while a symbol error rate performance close to that of an exactly linear receiver is achieved. This results permit to identify perspective directions for the better multi-standard and high energy efficient transceivers implementation.

The 2013 Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Pioneers Workshop, which will be held in conjunction with the 8 th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction, is the premiere venue for student research in the field. This highly selective workshop seeks to foster creativity, communication, and collaboration between the world's top student researchers in the field of human-robot interaction. Pioneers Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn about the current state of HRI, to present their research, and to network with one another and with select senior researchers in a setting that is less formal and more interactive then the main conference. The theme for this year is Re-envisioning HRI: Dealing With the Elephants in Our Room. The workshop aims to bring forward difficult to discuss issues to help the field achieve more balanced perspectives and a clearer picture of what sort of future we are building.

Software Architecture plays an essential role in the high level description of a system design. Despite its importance in the software engineering practice, the lack of formal description and verification support hinders the development of quality architectural models. In this paper, we present an automated approach to the modeling and verification of software architecture designs using the Process Analysis Toolkit (PAT). We present the formal syntax of the Wright# architecture description language together with its operational semantics in Labeled Transition System (LTS). A dedicated model checking module for Wright# is implemented in the PAT verification framework based on the proposed formalism. The module - ADL supports verification and simulation of software architecture models in PAT. We advance our work via defining an architecture style library that embodies commonly used architecture patterns to facilitate the modeling process. Finally, a case study of the Teleservices and Remote Medical Care System (TRMCS) modeling and verification is presented to evaluate the effectiveness and scalability of our approach. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, an electronically tunable active duplexer suitable for reconfigurable wireless transceiver application is presented. For the first time, the design has been realized as a MMIC. A novel capacitance tuning circuit has been implemented in the active duplexer. The design and, simulation and measured results of the tunable active duplexer are presented. The active duplexer MMIC provides an electronically tunable isolation of 20 to 45 dB between isolated ports and a gain of 14.5 to 16.5 dB between coupled ports in the tunable range from 2.32 to 2.48 GHz in both transmit and receive modes. This chip is suitable for 2.3GHz WiMAX and WiBro applications. © 2012 European Microwave Assoc.

This paper presents a new concept for automated reconfiguration control that is based on past model-based system analysis, load modeling and integrated system recovery analysis research and development. The approach uses a software based supervisory level control application that: (1) Monitors device level distribution protection device operation, (2) Generates isolation refinement and restoration switch operation lists using a model-based reconfiguration algorithm, and (3) Uses the switch operation list to remotely operate switches, reclosers and circuit breakers through Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to speed up fault recovery actions and reduce the size of outaged areas. The paper provides an overview of the model-based analysis concepts used to implement the reconfiguration controller and analysis algorithm, and also discusses reconfiguration algorithm design and operation. © 2012 IEEE.

In this position paper we discuss successes and limitations of current evaluation strategies for scientific visualizations and argue for embracing a mixed methods strategy of evalu- ation. The most novel contribution of the approach that we advocate is a new emphasis on employing design processes as practiced in related fields (e.g., graphic design, illustra- tion, architecture) as a formalized mode of evaluation for data visualizations. To motivate this position we describe a series of recent evaluations of scientific visualization in- terfaces and computer graphics strategies conducted within our research group. Complementing these more traditional evaluations our visualization research group also regularly employs sketching, critique, and other design methods that have been formalized over years of practice in design fields. Our experience has convinced us that these activities are invaluable, often providing much more detailed evaluative feedback about our visualization systems than that obtained via more traditional user studies and the like. We believe that if design-based evaluation methodologies (e.g., ideation, sketching, critique) can be taught and embraced within the visualization community then these may become one of the most effective future strategies for both formative and sum- mative evaluations. Finding an accurate network null model for protein-protein interactions (PPI) networks is an important and fundamental problem in today's systems biology. A number of graph models were introduced to model and analyze PPI networks. However, because the previous network models were developed to capture specific network properties or just mimic the way that real PPI network might have evolved, the whole connectivity information of PPI networks is not utilized to learn the topological structure of the networks. In this paper we propose a novel model for PPI networks which is based on geometric random graphs and employs the entire connectivity information of PPI networks to learn its structure. The computational experiments show the superiority of the fit of our method over five other network models to PPI data. Thus, the proposed network null model could facilitate further graph-based studies of protein-protein interactions and may help infer their hidden underlying biological knowledge. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
