One of the chief challenges of wearable sensing is adapting electronic components and sensors to the wearable environment. Electronic components are often rigid, bulky, and impermeable: factors that usually detract from wearing comfort. Here, we present a novel stretch sensor fabricated using the top thread of a standard industrial coverstitch machine. The machine is common in apparel production and offers the ability to easily fabricate custom-placed stretch sensors on textile and apparel products. The sensing properties of the stitch are enabled by a conductive thread which increases its electric resistance as the fabric is stretched, due to the geometry of the stitches. Our empirical analysis shows a sensor response in the order of 10 ohms, with almost linear behavior prior to saturation (when the stitch is fully stretched) for low-frequency extensions of 119% of initial sample length. An equivalent electrical model is presented for theoretical modeling of the sensor behavior.

This paper presents a new concept for automated reconfiguration control that is based on past model-based system analysis, load modeling and integrated system recovery analysis research and development. The approach uses a software based supervisory level control application that: (1) Monitors device level distribution protection device operation, (2) Generates isolation refinement and restoration switch operation lists using a model-based reconfiguration algorithm, and (3) Uses the switch operation list to remotely operate switches, reclosers and circuit breakers through Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to speed up fault recovery actions and reduce the size of outaged areas. The paper provides an overview of the model-based analysis concepts used to implement the reconfiguration controller and analysis algorithm, and also discusses reconfiguration algorithm design and operation.

Determining event ordering has always been a crucial issue in distributed computing. A well known model for describing event ordering is the happened-before relation. However, the traditional happened-before relation model is inadequate to faithfully characterize event ordering in recent emerging mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), which usually have no fixed supporting infrastructure and may experience dynamic network topology changes. In this paper, we first propose a new relation, called the extended-happened-before relation, to model the ordering of events for a MANET. Then we present an algorithm to assign logical time to events such that the extended-happened-before relation between events can be decided by comparing their timestamps. We finally show how to construct consistent global snapshots in a MANET when the ordering of events can be determined.

A Type-2 Fuzzy logic controller adapted with quantum genetic algorithm, referred to as type-2 quantum fuzzy logic controller (T2QFLC), is presented in this article for robot manipulators with unstructured dynamical uncertainties. Quantum genetic algorithm is employed to tune type-2 fuzzy sets and rule sets simultaneously for effective design of interval type-2 FLCs. Traditional fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs), often termed as type-1 FLCs using type-1 fuzzy sets, have difficulty in modeling and minimizing the effect of uncertainties present in many real time applications. Therefore, manually designed type-2 FLCs have been utilized in many control process due to their ability to model uncertainty and it relies on heuristic knowledge of experienced operators. The type-2 FLC can be considered as a collection of different embedded type-1 FLCs. However, manually designing the rule set and interval type-2 fuzzy set for an interval type-2 FLC to give a good response is a difficult task. The purpose of our study is to make the design process automatic. The type-2 FLCs exhibit better performance for compensating the large amount of uncertainties with severe nonlinearities. Furthermore, the adaptive type-2 FLC is validated through a set of numerical experiments and compared with QGA evolved type-1 FLCs, traditional and neural type-1 FLCs.
