This paper presents the development of a real-time response system to enhance student involvement in a class; by means of addressing the attendance and the participation of students. The system consists of student pads on an Android mobile platform, a lecturer pad, and an Apache Tomcat server hosting the software of the system. The system allows the lecturer to keep track of the attendance of every student, as well as monitoring the comprehension of the class in relation to a subject via interactive multiple-choice-questions and short-answer-questions.

Pixel clustering is a basic process in image segmentation for classifying various regions in an image. However, this clustering becomes complex for multispectral and hyperspectral images due to the high dimensionality of these images. For such cases, dimensionality reduction is usually used to remove component images unsuitable for pixel clustering, in order to reduce computaional cost and improves accuracy. We propose a simple dimensionality reduction method in which a subset of component images is selected from multiple images using the joint singular value decomposition. Results of experiments for LandsatTM multispectral images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Segmentation using a subimage chosen by the proposed enables us to avoid mixture of inappropriate component images and improve the performance of the segmentation.

There exists a class of nonlinear periodic disturbance in motor system. This nonlinear disturbance relates to some positions of system, and changes periodic by position. The research presents the system model with position dependent periodic disturbance, supposes to satisfy continuous Lipschitz condition, and derives the condition of position dependent period disturbance translating into time dependent periodic error. A novel iterative learning control method is proposed for attenuation multi-period error of system, which constructs learning operator by error convergence analytic, proposes the condition of compensate multi-period steady-state error, proposes and proves that it accelerates the condition of converging learning operator. The research uses simulation by three-axis test turntable. The simulation results verify that the method can compensate successfully period steady-stat error in motor system, and also proves this method can improve the control precision.

In this paper, the influence of non-equilibrium CO2 kinetics on gas dynamic parameters and transport properties in a viscous shock layer near blunt bodies is studied. This problem is important for accurate prediction of macroscopic parameters and heat transfer near a space vehicle re-entering the Mars atmosphere. The hypersonic flow of reacting CO2/CO/O2/C/O mixture is studied numerically using the accurate kinetic theory models for transport properties and chemical reaction rates proposed in our previous papers on the basis of three-temperature vibrational distributions. The kinetic theory algorithms were implemented directly to the computational fluid dynamics solvers. The transport properties and gas dynamic parameters in 2-D viscous shock layer near blunt bodies of different shape are studied for various test cases under Mars re-entry conditions. The influence of non-equilibrium effects on gas flow parameters and heat transfer is discussed; a quite different structure of a shock layer is found for various body shapes. The comparison with the results obtained using more simple models for CO2 kinetics, transport coefficients, and reaction rates is shown.

Music is a way of expressing our feelings and emotions in daily life. Suitable music can affect people in a positive way. However, current multimedia control methods, such as manual selection or automatic random mechanism which is now applied broadly in MP3 and CD player, cannot adaptively select suitable music according to the user's state. In this study, we proposed a novel brain computer interface (BCI)-based multimedia controller to help people to select suitable music according their cognitive states. In our system, a multimedia control MIDlet program built in the mobile phone was developed to recognize the user's cognitive state and select suitable music according his/her cognitive state. A wireless multi-channel electroencephalograph (EEG) acquisition module was also designed for monitoring the user's EEG. By the property of selecting suitable music type according to the user's cognitive state, our BCI-based mobile multimedia controller provides a novel prototype of multimedia controller.

In order to apply the LM device previously developed to precisely measuring small motion trajectories located on the different motion planes, three major improvements are successfully performed under the condition of completely maintaining the advantages of the device. These improvements include 1) development of a novel connection mechanism to smoothly attach the device to the spindle of a machining centre;2) employment of a new data sampling method to achieve a high sampling frequency independent of the operating system of the control computer;and 3) proposal of a set-up method to conveniently install the device on the test machining centre with respect to different motion planes. Practical measurement experiment results with the improved device on a machining centre sufficiently demonstrate the effectiveness of the improvements and confirm several features including a very good response to small displacement close to the resolution of the device, high precision, repeatability and reliance. Moreover, based on the measurement results for a number of trajectories for a wide range of motion conditions, the error characteristics of small size motions are systematically discussed and the effect of the movement size and feed rate on the motion accuracy is verified for the machining centre tested.

Sensor networks are increasingly used for tracking, monitoring, and observing spatial dynamic phenomena in the real world (e.g. urban area). In order to ensure an efficient deployment of a sensor network, several optimization algorithms have been proposed in recent years. Most of these algorithms often rely on oversimplified sensor models. In addition, they do not consider information on the terrain topography, city models, and the presence of diverse obstacles in the sensing area (e.g. buildings, trees, poles). Only some of those optimization algorithms attempt to consider the terrain information in the optimization of a sensor network deployment. However, most of these algorithms consider that the spatial models used for this purpose are perfect representations of the reality and are not sensitive to the quality of the information. However, spatial models are simplified representations of a complex reality, and hence are inherently uncertain. In this paper we will investigate the impact of the spatial data quality on the optimization of a sensor network and its spatial coverage in an urban area. For this purpose, we will investigate specific implications of spatial data quality criteria for a 3D city model that will be used in sensor network optimization algorithms. Then, we will analyze the impact of some of those criteria on the estimation of sensor network coverage.!Afterwards, a case study for sensor network deployment in an urban area will be presented. This case study will demonstrate the impact of 3D city models quality on the estimation of coverage using global and local optimization algorithms. Finally, the results obtained from this experimentation will be presented and discussed.

This paper presents an approach for the transient simulation of I/O buffers described by IBIS models. Using the latency insertion method a formulation can be obtained for the transient behavior of IBIS models and external circuitry. The formulation offers better convergence than traditional Newton-Raphson methods and is therefore more robust. Several computer simulations are performed to validate the method.
