FPGA has been used in many robotics projects for real-time image processing. It provides reliable systems with low execution time and simplified timing analysis. Many of these systems take a lot of time in development and testing phases. In some cases, it is not possible to test the system in real environments very often, due to accessibility, availability or cost problems. This paper is the result of a case study on vision systems for two robotics projects in which the vision team consisted of seven students working for six months fulltime on developing and implementing different image algorithms. While FPGA has been used for real-time image processing, some steps have been taken in order to reduce the development and testing phases. The main focus of the project is to integrate different testing methods with FPGA development. It includes a component based solution that uses a two-way communication with a PC controller for system evaluation and testing. Once the data is acquired from the vision board, the system stores it and simulates the same environment that has been captured earlier by feeding back the obtained data to FPGA. This approach addresses and implements a debugging methodology for FPGA based solutions which accelerate the development phase. In order to transfer massive information of images, RMII which is an interface for Ethernet communication, has been investigated and implemented. The provided solution makes changes easier, saves time and solves the problems mentioned earlier. © 2011 IEEE.

We present an approach to propagation based SAT encoding, Boolean equi-propagation, where constraints are modelled as Boolean functions which propagate information about equalities between Boolean literals. This information is then applied as a form of partial evaluation to simplify constraints prior to their encoding as CNF formulae. We demonstrate for a variety of benchmarks that our approach leads to a considerable reduction in the size of CNF encodings and subsequent speed-ups in SAT solving times. © 2011, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Collaborative simulation is an effective approach to performing simulation analysis for complex systems by integrating models developed for different engineering disciplines. Collaborative simulation issues include the modeling of coupled multidisciplinary systems, and the simulation running time integration of these models that are solved parallelly. Estimation of the local truncation error of coupling models is the key to solve multidisciplinary collaborative simulation problem, which is actually used to restrict the simulation step. This paper presents a variable-step method based on Richardson extrapolation for calculating the local truncation error to solve collaborative simulation problem of multidisciplinary coupling models. Formulas for estimating the local truncation error are derived through theoretical analysis by using integration methods and interpolation technologies, respectively. The simulation experiments are illustrated to validate the accuracy and efficiency of proposed collaborative simulation algorithm in comparison with the usual combinative algorithm.

The present study focuses on the erosion mechanism observed during abrasive water jet (AWJ) machining. An ANSYS/LS-Dyna 3D software-based finite element (FE) model is developed for the representation of the erosion process in a 3D configuration. The proposed FE model's solution, which accounts for the effect of multiple particle impacts on a workpiece made of stainless steel (AISI 304), is obtained using a 16-node cluster system. The influence of impact angle and particle velocity is currently studied, while the material's crater circularity is also evaluated. The results of the present study are found to be in very good agreement with their experimental counterparts. Copyright © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Several industrial operations in monitor control and command applications use data acquisition, where data from the external world is read, processed, used for decisions and, eventually, memorized by a digital system. Here data acquisition system with USB interface is considered. Using add-on serial to USB converters, an existing system can be made USB interfaced or the complete system can be redesigned using new generation microcontroller with inbuilt USB hardware stack. This paper describes a low-cost data acquisition system that includes Software-defined open source USB stack over generic ATmega32 microcontroller, having analog channels and digital I/O lines and a temperature sensor. At PC side, GUI application is designed *** with Instrumentation Active-x Controls to acquire and monitor data and control all system I/O. The system hardware developed is a low-cost alternative to commercially available systems that use USB controllers. The work has been implemented for temperature sensing and controlling and the results shown currently support the h/w and s/w developed. It can be used for biomedical analysis, industrial temperature loggers, industrial process, instrumentation controls and the like. © 2011 IEEE.

At CHI2011 we organized a SIG session asking the question "What theoretical roots do we build on, if any, in UX research?" Overall, 122 single items from about 70 participants were collected, which corroborates the relevance of and interest in this topic. Whilst the theoretical foundations for UX research are not yet established, those responses can serve as candidate resources for setting the theoretical directions. A primary conclusion from the SIG discussion is that the CHI community needs theories in UX research and practice. A major contribution of the workshop will be to clarify the applicability and transferability of different theories, theoretical foundations, concepts in informing UX design and evaluation in both research and practice. In particular we will look into theories that have already been applied in practice. © 2012 Authors.

We present ongoing development of a low-cost system to improve the flash-heat pasteurization process for human breast milk currently utilized in resource-constrained developing regions. Flash-heat was designed for low-resource environments, is simple to use and requires minimal infrastructure. It is currently used at a small-scale to provide safe breast milk to vulnerable infants with special needs. Safety concerns have limited the adoption of this method for use in human milk banks. The system presented in this paper improves the safety and procedural compliance of the flash-heat process by continuously monitoring the temperature of milk as it is being pasteurized, providing feedback to the user performing the procedure and bringing-in remotely-located quality assurance personnel into the process-approval loop. In partnership with PATH, a Seattle-based NGO, the system will be piloted at a human milk bank in South Africa later this year. The longer-term vision of the project is that the improved monitoring, feedback and reporting capabilities will help scale-up the adoption of cost-effective flash-heat pasteurization for establishing human milk banks in developing countries. We present results from in-lab experiments that have helped us assess the feedback capabilities of our system and have validated the need for having a temperature monitoring and feedback system to enhance the safety of the flash-heat process. © 2011 ACM.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can be observed in a huge variety of transmission links and network parts and have attracted a lot of attention since the mid 90's. In the field of optical MIMO transmission systems, multi-mode (MM) fibre offers the possibility to transmit different signals by different mode groups. In order to investigate the perspective of the MIMO philosophy within the field of optical transmission systems, channel measurements within a (2 × 2) MIMO system are carried out. For the channel measurements the second optical window and a fibre length of 1, 4 km was chosen. computer simulations on an overall data rate of 10,24 Gbps underline the potential of multi-mode fibres in optical high-data rate MIMO communication systems and show that in order to achieve the best bit-error rate, not necessarily all MIMO layers have to be activated. © 2011 IFIP.

This paper elaborates on the performance of orthogonal space-time block codes (STBCs) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in generalized-K fading conditions. The considered fading model is generic since it intimately encompasses both small-scale fading (modeled via the Nakagami-m distribution) and large-scale fading (modeled via the gamma distribution). In the following, new exact analytical expressions are derived for the Shannon capacity along with asymptotic expressions in the high and low Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) regimes. We also present exact tractable expressions followed by first-order expansions for the marginal outage probability and symbol error rate (SER);further, we quantify the performance of STBCs in terms of diversity order and coding gain. The derived analytical expressions are validated via a set of Monte-Carlo simulations which also demonstrate the implications of the model parameters on the overall performance. © 2011 IEEE.

Vanishing point estimation algorithms based on Gabor filters have been widely published. By applying Gabor filters, the texture orientation and the confidence level at every pixel of the image can be estimated. An adaptive soft-voting method to obtain a vanishing point was proposed in other research. Although that method can detect a proper vanishing point in most cases, its computational cost is very high. The goal of this paper is to reduce the computational cost of the algorithm. For this purpose we propose a new local voting method by scanning voters having high confidence levels. © 2011 SICE.
