Capstone courses in many disciplines often fall into a single paradigm: they allow students to practice the skills they should have gathered through their progress in the department curriculum in a real-world or near-real venue. However, these courses often fail the real-world test by one important factor: they are not interdisciplinary projects, which is not indicative of industry experiences. We are attempting to create an interdisciplinary environment for capstone courses, involving both design and computer science students, to more adequately prepare students for industry work. This work-in-progress paper describes our experiences and plans for bettering the interdisciplinary capstone experience. The experiences show that there is a fundamental miscommunication between students of different disciplines that hinders their ability to collaborate. By analyzing qualitative questionnaires from thirty-three computer science students, we have affirmed the existence of this rift in inter-departmental understanding. This realization has formed our basis for creating educational modules to ease the collaboration between computer science and design students.

Ka-band spectrum is relatively abundant and therefore attractive for services of satellite communication, targeting radar, and wireless broadband access technologies. However, Ka-band patch antenna is difficult in realization because the accurate manufacturing is indeed a challenge in obtaining excellent antenna performance at such high frequencies. This study develops three patch antenna arrays for operation at 28 GHz. Two of the three patch arrays with 2×2 and 4×1 patches, respectively, are realized on microwave printed circuit boards (PCBs). The experimental PCB patch arrays have bandwidths up to 5.7% and gains up to 13 dBi. Another 2×2 stacked-patch antenna array is fabricated with low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology for further bandwidth enhancement. This LTCC stacked-patch array comprises a novel opposite-side feeding structure to prevent any electrical effect on the parasitic patch. A measured gain of 10.35 dBi and a wide bandwidth of 10.1% (26.75-29.6 GHz) are achieved.

Different orientation piezoelectric films will form different acoustic *** acoustic wave（BAW）and surface acoustic wave（SAW）properties of novel（100）A1N films were theoretically analyzed in this *** regards the BAW properties,（100）A1N films can excite a pure shear mode（velocity=5867 m/s,K=2.45%）and exhibited a great application for films bulk acoustic resonator（FBAR）liquid *** regards the Rayleigh SAW modes of（100）A1N films on diamond, especial for mode 1,the phase velocity is 10474 m/s and the K is 2.31%at the films thickness ratio（h/λ）is 0.3.（100）A1N films on diamond also can excite high velocity shear horizontal（SH）SAW *** for mode 0,the K curve shows a maximum value（1.27%）at h/λ=0.28 and the velocity is 7496 m/*** research results provide an important theoretical basis for further application on FBAW and SAW devices.

In this paper, we present a modular approach to the high frequency simulation of large networks by utilizing the latency insertion method (LIM) and considering the stability criteria of partitions of different latencies in the circuit. This results in a robust algorithm that is able to preserve the stability condition while improving the runtime of the overall transient simulation. An extension to the LIM to handle dependent sources is also presented, along with a generalized stability criteria for selecting a maximum stable time step.

Machine maintenance and repair is not a trivial issue when it comes to renewable energy devices. It has been said that one of the most important factors in enhancing the marketability of wind energy is to cut its overall maintenance costs, which is about 10% - 20% of the overall cost of energy [1]. The average maintenance and repair costs of ocean wave energy devices are yet to be determined, but it may be higher than wind energy. The harsh ocean environment, repeated cycling of the drive train, coastal storms, environmental concerns, loss of revenue due to long periods of machine downtime, safety issues concerning technicians working on the buoy while it's still in operation, and so forth, all add to the maintenance and repair costs of a WEC (Wave Energy Converter). This study proposes a unique damage accumulation prediction algorithm that enables real-time determination of bearing fatigue life. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper we apply the design and engineering Methodology for Organizations (DEMO), to specify an ontological model for the generic Control Organization that we argue that exists in every organization. With our proposal, DEMO is extended so that we can specify critical properties of an organization - that we call measures - whose value must respect certain restrictions imposed by other properties of the organization - that we call viability norms. We can now also precisely specify defined resilience strategies that control and eliminate dysfunctions - violations of viability norms caused byexceptions. On top of this, we can also keep a systematic trace of the history of dysfunctions of an organization and of control acts executed to eliminate them. All of these facts are structured in a systematic manner and provided in a set of proposed tables, which are useful for a variety of purposes like (1) making control responsibilities clear and making organization agents accountable for bad control decisions, as well as (2) allowing more informed organization change decisions. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

An analytical expression is derived to approximate the magnetometric demagnetizing factors for two parallel ferromagnetic plates having the shape of rectangular prisms. The magnetometric demagnetizing factors relate the average magnetic fields within the plates' volumes to an external magnetic field. Knowing this relationship is essential for describing the response of magnetoelectric sensors comprising two parallel magnetostrictive plates. It is shown that two separate ferromagnetic layers provide better field sensitivity than a single layer with a doubled thickness. The obtained results are in a good agreement with numerical calculations and experimental data. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV) have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly and quieter than internal combustion engine vehicles. However, reduced noise can also lead to potentially dangerous situations for pedestrians when an oncoming vehicle is inaudible due to background noise (e.g. Kerber and Fastl, internoise 2007). The installation of devices that produce warning sounds in vehicles to alert pedestrians is being considered in various countries. Because this is a global topic, it is of vital interest to determine whether there exist cross-cultural differences. Pilot studies on this topic were performed in Japan (Yamauchi et al., internoise 2010) and, with improved input devices and test procedure, in Germany (Menzel et al., DAGA 2011). The level of three possible warning sounds (engine noise, car horn, and band-pass noise) were adjusted in presence of four different urban background sounds (busy street, residential area, heavy traffic, and shopping area) in laboratory environments. In the first part of the experiments, subjects were asked to adjust the level of the warning sounds so that they were clearly audible and could be reliably detected in the background noise. In the second part the goal was to adjust the level so that the warning sounds were just audible. The results of the adjustments showed no significant difference between the two subjects groups. The results were discussed in view of inter-individual and intraindividual differences. Moreover, the results were compared to current recommendations for sound levels of warning sounds in quiet vehicles.

In opportunistic spectrum access (OSA), secondary radios (SRs) are allowed to access the channel whenever primary radios (PRs) are not transmitting. The PR's spectrum activities are normally assumed to be a 2-state continuous Markov on-off process which can be modeled as two independent exponential random variables. On the other hand, some simulations prefer using a 2-state discrete Markov chain. As SRs periodically sense the channel to determine its availability before transmitting, maintaining the same false alarm and missed detection probabilities is necessary but still insufficient when discretizing the continuous PR on-off process. Earlier work has shown that type II missed detection error, which is a function of spectrum sensing period, occurs because PR, which is sensed to be inactive in the last sensing duration, can become active before the next spectrum sensing is performed. Hence, it is insufficient to simply perform simulation at the time stamp of spectrum sensing period as information about the type II missed detection error will be lost. This paper looks into the context of spectrum sensing on how we should select the time stamp of the simulation, i.e., the transition probabilities of the 2-state discrete Markov chain, so as to approximate the 2-state continuous Markov process without losing any valuable information. We first derive the expression for type II missed detection error based on the discrete PR on-off model. Then we present the method to decide the time stamp of the simulation so that type II missed detection probability is kept within a given error bound. The same approach can be generalized to other probability distributions of the spectrum activities.

A new large area CMOS Active Pixel Sensor has been developed as single platform technology to be used across a range of ionizing and non-ionizing imaging applications in preclinical science, ranging from imaging of protein sequences to functional analysis of radio-labeled tissue sections. We present the first images of chemiluminescence detection in western blotting with a room temperature CMOS APS. Detection performance in western blotting have been compared with the gold standard detection medium, film emulsion, showing higher dynamic range and sensitivity with this new device. We also report on our first images of [~(125)I]Epibatidine autoradiography of brain sections using a novel large area CMOS APS.
