This study presents a design of a compact stub-type bandpass filter with capacitively loaded stubs and a fold-back structure. This paper employed the fabrication process of low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) for filter realization of a multi-layer structure. The proposed filter structure required adding end capacitors to stubs to extend their electrical length, while achieving a length reduction of 30%. This study provided design curves to determine the dimensions of the end capacitor for reaching maximum electrical length extension. In addition, a fold-back configuration was applied to halve the filter size. An experimental filter operating at 5.8 GHz was fabricated and measured to validate the design concept, achieving a highly compact size of 14.3 × 8.2 × 0.76mm3.

A series-parallel system is one of the most popular redundant system models. It consists of subsystems that are connected in series and each subsystem consists of interchangeable components in parallel. There are two types of such systems: all components can work for all subsystems, or the components consisting of a certain subsystem can work only in that specific subsystem. For the first case, there are some heuristic methods to approximately solve the optimal component allocation. Yamachi et al. [9,10] proposed an algorithm that obtains the exact Pareto solutions for problems that are not so large, and a solution method that obtains approximate solutions for large problems. The method was based on an evolutional algorithm. For the second case, Yamachi et al. [13] proposed the depth first search (DFS) algorithm that obtains exact Pareto solutions using the branch and bound method. The method is made for a series k-out-of-n system, which is a system consisting of k-out-of-N subsystems that are connected in series. In this paper, we propose an alternate method for the second case;a new algorithm that employs the breadth first search (BFS) method to find Pareto solutions for a series k-out-of-n system more efficiently than the existing algorithm.

This paper elaborates on the performance of orthogonal space-time block codes (STBCs) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in generalized-K fading conditions. The considered fading model is generic since it intimately encompasses both small-scale fading (modeled via the Nakagami-m distribution) and large-scale fading (modeled via the gamma distribution). In the following, new exact analytical expressions are derived for the Shannon capacity along with asymptotic expressions in the high and low Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) regimes. We also present exact tractable expressions followed by first-order expansions for the marginal outage probability and symbol error rate (SER); further, we quantify the performance of STBCs in terms of diversity order and coding gain. The derived analytical expressions are validated via a set of Monte-Carlo simulations which also demonstrate the implications of the model parameters on the overall performance.

Tracking and understanding human gait is an important step towards improving elderly mobility and safety. Our research team is developing a vision-based tracking system that estimates the 3D pose of a wheeled walker user's lower limbs with a depth sensor, Kinect, mounted on the moving walker. Our tracker estimates 3D poses from depth images of the lower limbs in the coronal plane in a dynamic, uncontrolled environment. We employ a probabilistic approach based on particle filtering, with a measurement model that works directly in the 3D space and another measurement model that works in the projected image space. Empirical results show that combining both measurements, assuming independence between them, yields tracking results that are better than with either one alone. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the tracking system with different users. We demonstrate that the tracker is robust against unfavorable conditions such as partial occlusion, missing observations, and deformable tracking target. Also, our tracker does not require user intervention or manual initialization commonly required in most trackers.

The effect of droplets on the surface of the overhead insulators (porcelain and silicone rubber) and their contributions to electric field distribution and hence possibility of failure is investigated. Initially the variation of electric field distribution around a typical water droplet in the sheath and shed regions as a function of contact angle is investigated. Several industrial operations in monitor control and command applications use data acquisition, where data from the external world is read, processed, used for decisions and, eventually, memorized by a digital system. Here data acquisition system with USB interface is considered. Using add-on serial to USB converters, an existing system can be made USB interfaced or the complete system can be redesigned using new generation microcontroller with inbuilt USB hardware stack. This paper describes a low-cost data acquisition system that includes Software-defined open source USB stack over generic ATmega32 microcontroller, having analog channels and digital I/O lines and a temperature sensor. At PC side, GUI application is designed using .NET with Instrumentation Active-x Controls to acquire and monitor data and control all system I/O. The system hardware developed is a low-cost alternative to commercially available systems that use USB controllers. The work has been implemented for temperature sensing and controlling and the results shown currently support the h/w and s/w developed. It can be used for biomedical analysis, industrial temperature loggers, industrial process, instrumentation controls and the like.

Electronic components are conventionally viewed as black boxes whose only responsibility is to implement interfaces requested and required by designers operating at a higher level of abstraction. This is especially true in the design of controllers where control laws are designed at at high level of abstraction and electronics are used to merely instantiate components of the law's block diagram. In this paper, we consider the use of block components that adapt their internal structures to optimize whole-system behavior using information scoped in multiple layers of abstraction of the whole design. The goal is to provide extended adaptability of the host system while still allowing high-level designers to treat their control design process conventionally.

A typical set of partial discharges (PD) occurring in insulation systems can be characterized by a three dimensional plot of their phase `Φ' on the power line cycle, apparent charge magnitude `q' and the number of pulses `n'. A digital acquisition system is developed which can measure `Φ' and `q' values of `n' PD's occurring on a given power line voltage and then plot n (φ, q). The system is developed using the data acquisition card NI-5112, which is a 2-channel high speed digitizer (100 MS/s) with the acquisition and analyses programs written in LabVIEW. The system is being tested using artificially generated PD pulses which have variable `Φ' and `q'.
