All freshman engineering students at York College participate in a spring semester design challenge as part of a year-long, two-course introduction to engineering. This paper describes the course organization, the project goals, and project itself and how it supports the broader engineering curriculum goals of engaging freshman engineering students in a design project, exposing them in an interesting way to the breath of engineering, and motivating them in their engineering studies. The students work in small teams and have roughly 12 weeks to design an automated electromechanical system that first transports three empty Snapple bottles, three tennis balls, and 36 oz. of water to a 2/x3/ operational zone. The machine must fill each bottle with 12 oz. of water, cap each bottle by covering the top with a tennis ball, and then deliver the capped and filled bottles to an area outside of the operational zone. The bottle-filling project serves as the second of two interdisciplinary engineeringdesign experiences during the freshman year. It introduces aspects of computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering, including the following five primary knowledge areas: (i) machining and fabrication;(ii) electronic circuit prototyping and programming;(iii) sensor and actuator applications;(iv) mechanical design;(v) project planning;and (vi) presentation skills. A project demonstration at the end of the semester determines the relative effectiveness of each machine based upon a number of quantitative factors, including the total time required to complete the overall process, the volume of water in each bottle, the number of bottles successfully capped, the amount of water spilled, and approximate manufacturing cost. Some qualitative factors considered are simplicity, creativity, and aesthetics. Lack of proper English pronunciations is a major problem for immigrant population in developed countries like U.S. This poses various problems, including a barrier to entry into mainstream society. This paper presents a research study that explores the use of speech technologies merged with activity-based and arcadebased games to do pronunciation feedback for Hispanic children within the U.S. A 3-month long study with immigrant population in California was used to investigate and analyze the effectiveness of computeraided pronunciation feedback through games. In addition to quantitative findings that point to statistically significant gains in pronunciation quality, the paper also explores qualitative findings, interaction patterns and challenges faced by the researchers in dealing with this community. It also describes the issues involved in dealing with pronunciation as a competency. Copyright 2010 ACM.

A new remote server based gaming approach, where the responsibility of executing the gaming engines is put on remote servers instead of the mobile devices, has the potential for enabling mobile users to play the same rich Internet games available to PC users. However, the mobile gaming user experience may be limited by risks of unacceptably high response time, and low gaming video quality, as gaming control commands, and the resulting gaming video, have to travel through wireless networks characterized by high bandwidth fluctuations, latency and packet loss. In this paper, we propose a set of application layer optimization techniques to ensure acceptable gaming response time and video quality in the remote server based approach. The techniques include downlink gaming video rate adaptation, uplink delay optimization, and client play-out delay adaptation. Experiments conducted on a commercial HSDPA network demonstrate that the proposed optimization techniques can make the remote server based approach feasible, allowing rich Internet games to be played on mobile devices, while ensuring acceptable user experience.

This paper presents a wavelet processing method for time and frequency domain electromagnetic fields for the rigorous and efficient inspection of the wave physics properties of transient and time-harmonic electromagnetic field solutions. More specifically, this research expounds upon the construction of (discrete) isotropic Fast Wavelet Transform (FWT) decompositions for multidimensional time and frequency domain electromagnetic fields with applications to electromagnetic radiation and scattering. In this work, discretely sampled space-time and space-frequency electromagnetic fields are processed using the (isotropic) Fast Wavelet Transform (FWT) algorithm [5], customized here to address real (IR) and complex (C) valued electromagnetic vector fields. Moreover, the structure and physical interpretation of the wavelet coefficients are described in detail.

A new Cloud Mobile Gaming (CMG) approach, where the responsibility of executing the gaming engines, including the most compute intensive tasks of graphic rendering, is put on cloud servers instead of the mobile devices, has the potential for enabling mobile users to play the same rich Internet games available to PC users. However, the mobile gaming user experience may be limited by the communication constraint imposed by available wireless networks and computation constraint imposed by the cost and availability of cloud servers. In this paper, we propose a rendering adaptation technique which can adapt the game rendering parameters to satisfy CMG communication and computation constraints, such that the overall mobile gaming user experience is maximized. Experiments conducted on a commercial UMTS network demonstrate that the proposed rendering adaptation techniques can make the CMG approach feasible: ensuring protection against wireless network conditions, and ensuring server computation scalability, thereby ensuring acceptable mobile gaming user experience.

This paper deals with a network configuration considering priori estimation error variance and communication energy in sensor networked feedback system. Each sensor transmits information to a fusion center via multi-hop communication network. We propose a novel network configuration algorithm that each sensor node transmits information with a same dimension. The transmitted information is merged in each sensor node and consists of measurement data with time delay. Then the priori estimate can be minimum variance estimation. The proposed algorithm achieves sub-optimal network topology with minimum energy and a desired variance. Experimental results show an effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, a digitally controlled integrated single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) converter operating in pseudo-CCM (PCCM) mode is presented. With an adaptive freewheel current modulation (AFCM) technique, conduction loss of the freewheel switch is significantly reduced in unbalanced load conditions. Moreover, cross-regulation and switching noise are both effectively restricted. A prototype of a single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) boost converter was designed with a 130-nm CMOS process. The two outputs are regulated at 2.5 V and 1.8 V respectively, at a switching frequency of 500 KHz. The simulation results indicate that the expectant specifications are well implemented.

In this paper, a CMOS switched-capacitor voltage doubler is proposed. It employs the techniques of clock synchronization and charge transfer blocking to minimize the reversion loss. The clock transition period detection and boosting circuit modules allow continuous charge action to the output node, which significantly improves operation performances. The proposed voltage doubler was designed using IBM 180 nm CMOS process, with a 1.2 V supply voltage. Under no-load condition, it achieves 99.92% of ideal voltage level with 8 mV voltage ripple, while consuming only 9.6 ¿W of quiescent power. With a load ranging from 20 k¿ to 200 k¿, the up-conversion ratio performs 45% better than the prior arts.
