Cellular neural networks (CNNs) are considered here as cellular analog programmable multidimensional processing arrays with distributed logic and memory. The interconnecting weights between the neighbouring processing elements are defined by the template *** the paper a new systematic way is presented to find robust templates. Using the new learning algorithm some templates were found for a CNN based layout design rule checking algorithm. The algorithm has been tested in our experimental system with real life examples. A typical design rule checking of a 432×164 pixels area takes 8s computation time on our CNN hardware accelerator board. © 1992 IEEE.

A method for the path-control of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems that combines the flexibility and easy installation of optical methods with the simplicity and robustness of the inductive method is proposed. Using a new computing paradigm, the cellular neural network (CNN), and a related device, the VLSI CNN chip, a very high speed solution that is less expensive than the conventional methods can be achieved. This AGV control complies with the requirements of CIM systems. Further advantages of the proposed system are as follows: fault tolerance and the ability to give instructions along the path, and the use of a simple local control.< >

The analogic type of algorithm is introduced. The application potential is reviewed and the biological relevance is analyzed. It is shown that the architecture is optimal not only for silicon implementations, but also for many biological information processing organs that have the same structure.< >

The authors show that the game of life algorithm, which is equivalent to a Turing machine, can be realized by cellular neural networks (CNNs). They also present a multipath CNN algorithm that demonstrates the capabilities of analog/logic (analogic) software. Complex image processing tasks can be realized by programmable dual computing CNNs. A specific example of blob-counting in a gray-scale image is presented.< >

The authors present a parallel algorithm for logic simulation of VLSI circuits. It is implemented on a network of transputers connected in a ring topology. The approach is based on partitioning a functionality matrix representation of the circuit among the transputers and adopting a data flow technique for the solution. A significant aspect of the algorithm is that it overlaps computation with communication, thereby reducing the communication overhead. It also attempts even distribution of load in order to reduce processor idle time. The algorithm possesses the advantages of ease of implementation and ease of extension to incorporate additional parameters for simulation. Performance results of the algorithm are given.< >

Novel concepts of designs for diagnosability and reliability are defined and developed. A diagnosable design of VLSI system is presented, in which fault isolation is realized by minimal additional hardware instead of traditional software diagnostic procedures such that the computation space and time for fault isolation are saved. The presented fault-tolerant design uses online fault detection and isolation techniques, yields higher reliability with minimized hardware overhead of no more than 125% as opposed to over 200% in classical redundancy fault-tolerant designs. Using this scheme, the ability to isolate intermittent faults is a significant improvement over existing fault isolation methods because faults could be isolated right after they are detected.< >

Roll Eccentricity Control for Strip Rolling Mills

An in-depth review of the roll eccentricity control design problem is provided which encompasses a number of recent, novel, design contributions and includes experimental results from two separate steel, tandem cold rolling mill installations. A unifying approach to eccentricity control enables the diverse range of published design solutions to be compared. The key conclusion from this comparison is the mathematical equivalence of eccentricity controllers implemented with algorithms operating in either the time domain or the frequency domain. Another important design aspect is shown to be the combination of available plant measurements and a plant model, to synthesise an explicit, generalised estimator for the instantaneous, total, roll eccentricity signal. This signal is then filtered and individual, periodic roll components extracted for subsequent recombination in a control output signal which may be subjected to further filtering in order to maintain closed loop stability. The conditions for stability are discussed and their influence on the selection of the most appropriate forms of input signal estimator highlighted. An integrated design, named “AUSREC”, for the control of feed and eccentricity induced disturbances is developed which provides fast, stable control and overcomes many of the fundamental difficulties inherent in earlier approaches. Friction induced hysteresis is shown to be a major cause of poor performance whose impact can be minimised by the appropriate location of load cells and the correct control design strategy. Advantages arising from the design are suitability for hot and cold 4-high rolling mills, with or without pulse generators on the undriven backup rolls, and modest computational requirements. Extensive simulation results and experimental recordings are provided.

Functional testing is becomilng more important due to the increasing complexity in digital LSI/VLSI devices. Various functional testing approaches have been proposed to meet this urgent need in LSI/VLSI testing. This paper presents the basic ideas behind deterministic functional testing and concisely overviews eight major functional testing techniques. Comparisons among these techniques and suggestions for future development are made to meet the challenges in this fast growing testing field.

A stationary estimator is presented that provides estimates both for the outputs and the inputs of linear time-invariant systems. The estimates satisfy the input-output equations and are optimal in a weighted minimum variance sense. It is shown that the true optimum problem is too complicated to allow a general closed-form solution and a sub-optimal approach is suggested that leads to a simple computational algorithm.
