The usage of machine learning and deep learning algorithms have necessitated Artificial Intelligence'. AI is aimed at automating things by limiting human interference. It is widely used in IT, healthcare, finance, and agriculture. It is achieved through several deep learning algorithms that reflect the human brain's intelligence. These AI algorithms can be manipulated according to changing needs and improved efficiency. This paper tries to utilize the developments made in AI technology to classify the images and recognize the objects present in them. One widely used AI algorithm is CNN (Convolutional Neural Networks). The CNN is a deep learning-based algorithm that consists of various layers that extract and filters the parameters present in the images. Some additional layers of ResNet50 and the CNN algorithm are used to extract the parameters to improve image recognition accuracy. The image dataset taken for training and testing the proposed model is imageNet. The images are initially processed before sending them to the proposed model. The proposed model is trained, validated, and tested through the images obtained after the initial processing. The same process is repeated several times until getting the maximum accuracy. The accuracy of the proposed model in terms of image recognition is recorded. The obtained results are compared with other image classification algorithms like VGG16 and VGG19. Given the severity of waste pollution as a major environmental concern, intelligent and sustainable waste management is becoming increasingly crucial in both developed and developing countries. The material composition and volume of urban solid waste are key considerations in processing, managing, and utilizing city waste. Deep learning technologies have emerged as viable solutions to address waste management issues by reducing labor costs and automating complex tasks. However, the limited number of trash image categories and the inadequacy of existing datasets have constrained the proper evaluation of machine learning model performance across a large number of waste classes. In this paper, we present robust waste image classification and object detection studies using deep learning models, utilizing 28 distinct recyclable categories of waste images comprising a total of 10,406 images. For the waste classification task, we proposed a novel dual-stream network that outperformed several state-of-the-art models, achieving an overall classification accuracy of 83.11%. Additionally, we introduced the GELAN-E (generalized efficient layer aggregation network) model for waste object detection tasks, obtaining a mean average precision (mAP50) of 63%, surpassing other state-of-the-art detection models. These advancements demonstrate significant progress in the field of intelligent waste management, paving the way for more efficient and effective solutions. © The Author(s) 2024.

Real-Time On-Site Ground-Motion Prediction Using ResNet

On-site warnings can decrease the range of late alert zone during earthquakes. This study develops a deep learning model to predict whether the maximum peak ground acceleration at a station exceeds 25 Gal based on the waveform of the initial P-wave. A ResNet architecture model is developed to address the degradation problem in multilayered models, thereby enhancing performance. The model exhibits high performance for a test dataset, achieving F1-scores higher than 90% over various time windows, and outperforms the traditional progressive displacement value (Pdv) method and newer convolutional neural network (CNN) methods. Ground motion of two actual earthquakes are applied to test the model and validate its prediction capabilities, and the results indicate that the proposed model has higher accuracy and speed than Pdv and CNN methods. In addition, the model is integrated with the Earthworm earthquake early warning system for real-time waveform analysis and prediction, extending the model’s applicability beyond experimental stages to online systems. The proposed method is also tested using data from earthquakes that occurred in March 2023. © Seismological Society of America.

One dangerous side effect of diabetes that affects the eyes is called diabetic retinopathy. It happens as a result of alterations in the retina’s blood vessels, which can cause harm and even blindness. The development of red lesions in the retina is one typical sign of diabetic retinopathy. These red lesions may be a sign of microaneurysms or hemorrhages, which are important characteristics to identify and track as diabetic retinopathy progresses. This process becomes even more demanding in the early stages of the disease where symptoms are less pronounced in the images. Leveraging machine-based learning for medical image analysis, especially deep learning algorithms, has demonstrated its capability to enhance the early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, providing a more efficient and effective alternative to traditional manual assessments. The proposed work aims to improve the efficiency of early detection of diabetic retinopathy by utilizing Deep Learning (16-layer CNN) to determine a person’s likelihood of having diabetic retinopathy using a 02-Class model that compiles a variety of datasets, specifically IDRiD dataset. The entire dataset contains 18,590 fundus photographs, in which 3662 are allocated for training, 1928 for validation, and 13,000 for testing. All datasets had a similar distribution of output classes, which is a fundamental property of this type of data. Using the IDRiD dataset, the suggested Red Lesion detection system’s specificity and sensitivity were found to be 98% and 89%, respectively, with an accuracy of 95.32%. Using the MESSIDOR dataset, the Diabetic Retinopathy Severity Classification System’s specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy were found to be 93.8, 92.3, and 94%, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Preservation of the crops depends on early and accurate detection of pests on crops as they cause several diseases decreasing crop production and quality. Several deep-learning techniques have been applied to overcome the issue of pest detection on crops. We have developed the YOLOCSP-PEST model for Pest localization and classification. With the Cross Stage Partial Network (CSPNET) backbone, the proposed model is a modified version of You Only Look Once Version 7 (YOLOv7) that is intended primarily for pest localization and classification. Our proposed model gives exceptionally good results under conditions that are very challenging for any other comparable models especially conditions where we have issues with the luminance and the orientation of the images. It helps farmers working out on their crops in distant areas to determine any infestation quickly and accurately on their crops which helps in the quality and quantity of the production yield. The model has been trained and tested on 2 datasets namely the IP102 data set and a local crop data set on both of which it has shown exceptional results. It gave us a mean average precision (mAP) of 88.40% along with a precision of 85.55% and a recall of 84.25% on the IP102 dataset meanwhile giving a mAP of 97.18% on the local data set along with a recall of 94.88% and a precision of 97.50%. These findings demonstrate that the proposed model is very effective in detecting real-life scenarios and can help in the production of crops improving the yield quality and quantity at the same time.

Bias analysis of AI models for undergraduate student admissions

Bias detection and mitigation is an active area of research in machine learning. This work extends previous research done by the authors Van Busum and Fang (Proceedings of the 38th ACM/SIGAPP Symposium on Applied computing, 2023) to provide a rigorous and more complete analysis of the bias found in AI predictive models. Admissions data spanning six years was used to create an AI model to determine whether a given student would be directly admitted into the School of science under various scenarios at a large urban research university. During this time, submission of standardized test scores as part of a student’s application became optional which led to interesting questions about the impact of standardized test scores on admission decisions. We developed and analyzed AI models to understand which variables are important in admissions decisions, and how the decision to exclude test scores affects the demographics of the students who are admitted. We then evaluated the predictive models to detect and analyze biases these models may carry with respect to three variables chosen to represent sensitive populations: gender, race, and whether a student was the first in his/her family to attend college. We also extended our analysis to show that the biases detected were persistent. Finally, we included several fairness metrics in our analysis and discussed the uses and limitations of these metrics. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Enhancing sarcasm detection through grasshopper optimization with deep learning based sentiment analysis on social media

Detecting sarcasm in social media presents challenges in natural language processing (NLP) due to the informal language, contextual complexities, and nuanced expression of sentiment. Integrating sentiment analysis (SA) with sarcasm detection enhances the understanding of text meaning. Deep learning (DL), utilizing neural networks to grasp lexical and contextual features, offers a method for sarcasm detection. However, current DL-based sarcasm detection methods often overlook sentiment semantics, a crucial aspect for improving detection outcomes. Therefore, this study develops a new sarcasm detection using grasshopper optimization algorithm with DL (SD-GOADL) technique. The SD-GOADL technique aims to explore the patterns that exist in social media data and detect sarcasm. To obtain this, the SD-GOADL technique undergoes data pre-processing and Glove based word embedding technique. Next, the classification of sarcasm takes place using deep belief network (DBN) system. For enhancing the detection results of the DBN approach, the SD-GOADL technique uses GOA for hyperparameter selection process. The stimulation outcome of the SD-GOADL technique is tested on a sarcasm dataset and the results highlight the significant performance of the SD-GOADL technique compared to recent models. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of Computer Applications and Management 2024.

FlexIM: Efficient and Verifiable Index Management in Blockchain

Blockchain-based query with its traceability and data provenance has become increasingly popular and widely adopted in numerous applications. Yet existing index-based query approaches are only efficient under static blockchain query workloads where the query attribute or type must be fixed. It turns out to be particularly challenging to construct an efficient index for dynamic workloads due to prohibitively long construction time and excessive storage consumption. In this paper, we present FlexIM, the first efficient and verifiable index management system for blockchain dynamic queries. The key innovation in FlexIM is to uncover the inherent characteristics of blockchain, i.e., data distribution and block access frequency, and then to optimally choose the index by utilizing reinforcement learning technique under varying workloads. In addition, we enhance and facilitate verifiability with low storage overhead by leveraging Root Merkle Tree (RMT) and Bloom Filter Merkle Tree (BMT). Our comprehensive evaluations demonstrate that FlexIM outperforms the state-of-the-art blockchain query mechanism, vChain+, by achieving a 26.5% speedup while consuming 94.2% less storage, on average, over real-world Bitcoin datasets. © 1989-2012 IEEE.
