Responding to the need for semantic lexical resources in natural language processing applications, we examine methods to acquire noun compounds (NCs), e.g., orange juice, together with suitable fine-grained semantic interpretations, e.g., squeezed from, which are directly usable as paraphrases. We employ bootstrapping and web statistics, and utilize the relationship between NCs and paraphrasing patterns to jointly extract NCs and such patterns in multiple alternating iterations. In evaluation, we found that having one compound noun fixed yields both a higher number of semantically interpreted NCs and improved accuracy due to stronger semantic restrictions. © 2011 Association for Computational Linguistics.

As modern software systems operate in a highly dynamic context, they have to adapt their behaviour in response to changes in their operational environment or/and requirements. Triggering adaptation depends on detecting quality of service (QoS) violations by comparing observed QoS values to predefined thresholds. These threshold-based adaptation approaches result in late adaptations as they wait until violations have occurred. This may lead to undesired consequences such as late response to critical events. In this paper we introduce a statistical approach CREQA - Control Charts for the Runtime Evaluation of QoS Attributes. This approach estimates at runtime capability of a system, and then it monitors and provides early detection of any changes in QoS values allowing timely intervention in order to prevent undesired consequences. We validated our approach using a series of experiments and response time datasets from real world web services. © 2011 IEEE.

Gamification is not a newly emerging concept. Perhaps, it is a new term to some people. Gamification is a powerful new strategy to influence and motivate groups of people. It applies game mechanics to non-game activities to change the user's behavior of an application. It improves the engagement of user by keeping score of points earned through various activities on the application. The recent gamified websites or a related service such as Foursquare is a location-based application that pinpoints where you are and your activities. Users of the Foursquare can "check in" to various locations on their mobile phones and gain incentives like badges or deals. Gamification is utilised as a mean to build up user loyalty, and not so much to gain their long-term engagement. This article discusses how the gamification can help to drive the sustainability after a mobile application has been delivered and is in use. It is important to make mobile application continuously visible and sustainable if the concept of gamification has been used correctly. The more users can gain from the virtual and tangible rewards of using our application, the more we can be rewarded from our users. It also discusses how adding a "game layer" has improved the basic functions in society like educating people to become more responsible and helpful and use badges as virtual reward to users who contribute photos. Interactive mobile application designed to change the way of people report road accident cases with applying a simplicity and convenience principles. For instance, user just needs to snap photo and touch on screen to report a road accident case. © 2011 IEEE.

High Dimensional Model Representation (HDMR) method does not have the random data partitioning capability because of its nature. This paper focuses on how we can bring the random data partitioning feature to the HDMR method by virtue of the fluctuation free approximation method for the multivariate interpolation problems. The main aim of this work is to construct the universal fluctuation free matrix and to determine the best eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors needed in our new method for partitioning the given multivariate random data through the HDMR method.

Visualization of architectural design decision (ADD) and its rationale, as a kind of traceability information, is supposed to facilitate the understanding of architecture design and the reasoning behind the design rationale, which is supposed to improve the architecting process and gets better architecture design results. But the lack of empirical evaluation that supports this statement prevents industrial practitioners from using ADD visualization in their daily architecting activities. In this paper, we conducted a controlled experiment to investigate how visualization of ADD can improve the understanding of architecture design by using Compendium, an open source tool for rationale visualization. The preliminary results show that visualization of ADD and its rationale does not increase the total time for reading architecture document (including visualization diagrams of ADDs) plus designing task, and it improves the understanding of architects on existing architecture design with better new design results. Binary bell polynomials, bilinear approach to exact periodic wave solutions of (2 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear evolution equations

In the present letter, we get the appropriate bilinear forms of (2 + 1)-dimensional KdV equation, extended (2 + 1)-dimensional shallow water wave equation and (2 + 1)-dimensional Sawada - Kotera equation in a quick and natural manner, namely by appling the binary Bell polynomials. Then the Hirota direct method and Riemann theta function are combined to construct the periodic wave solutions of the three types nonlinear evolution equations. And the corresponding figures of the periodic wave solutions are given. Furthermore, the asymptotic properties of the periodic wave solutions indicate that the soliton solutions can be derived from the periodic wave solutions. © 2011 Chinese Physical Society and IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this paper firstly we discuss an approach for supporting risk identification with the use of higher-level organizational models. We provide some intuitive metrics for extracting measures of actor criticality and vulnerability from organizational models. This helps direct risk management to areas of critical importance within organization models. Secondly, we provide details of an experiment that we conducted to evaluate our methodology. We believe our novel approach, will provide added benefits when used with other approaches to risk management during business process management, that do not reference the greater organizational context during risk assessment. © 2011 IEEE.

Explanation, trust, and transparency are concepts that are strongly tied in with users' confidence in, and acceptance of computerised systems. Case-based reasoning (CBR) systems lend themselves easily to generate explanations, as they typically organise and represent knowledge in a way that makes it possible to reason about and thereby generate explanations. The work presented here is a first step towards making a CBR engine explanation-aware. We demonstrate how a plugin for Protégé and myCBR can facilitate explanations for the retrieval phase of a CBR system.

We develop an effective method for the study of cervical vertebra maturation (CVM) for bone age evaluation. Such studies need an accurate X-ray radiographs segmentation of cervical vertebra. It is difficult to have a good segmentation on this type of images. Current segmentation methods do not work well on scanned images from analog image X-ray radiographs of cervical vertebra. A new method for analysis of cervical bone age is proposed. Two key techniques are developed in this proposed segmentation algorithm: (1) a fitting weight matrix is built to reduce the effect of subjective factors entered by the user when fast marching method is used to obtain the initial rough outline of cervical vertebra, and (2) apply a curve fitting method based on rotating and overlapping parabolic curves to derive the final segments of cervical vertebra. Furthermore, the user can calculate corresponding parameters from segmented results to assess the bone age. Experimental results using the proposed algorithm show that our algorithm is more accurate than those of fast marching method (FMM) and radiologists through repetition. It also shows that the proposed method has a higher accuracy on the correlation of the skeletal maturity indicators (SMI) and quantitative cervical vertebral maturation (QCVM). © 2011 ACM.

Exploring an unknown environment using team of autonomous mobile robots is an important task in many real-world applications. Many existing map exploration algorithms are based on frontier, which is the boundary between unexplored space and known open space. In the context of multiple robots, the main problem of frontier-based algorithm is to choose appropriate target points for the individual robots so that they can efficiently explore the different part of the common area. This paper proposed a novel distributed frontier-based map exploration algorithm using Particle Swarm Optimization model for robot coordination. In this algorithm, the robot keeps moving to the nearby frontier to reduce the size of the unknown region, and is navigated towards frontier far away based on the PSO model after exploring the local area. The exploration is completed when there are no frontier cells on the map. Our algorithm has been implemented and tested both in simulation runs and real world experiment. The result shows that our method has a good scalability and efficiency. © 2011 IEEE.
