Research has shown that most learning in the workplace takes place outside of formal training and, given the swiftly changing nature of the field, computer science graduates more than most workers, need to be able to learn computing topics outside of organized classes. In this paper we discuss students' perceptions of the difference between formal and informal learning of computing topics, based on three datasets: essays collected from a technical writing course at a single university;the results of a brainstorming exercise conducted in the same course;and semi-structured interviews conducted at six institutions in three countries. The students report strengths and weaknesses in informal learning. On the one hand, they are motivated, can choose their level of learning, can be more flexible about how they learn, and often retain the material better. On the other hand, they perceive that they may miss important aspects of a topic, learn in an ad hoc way, and have difficulty assessing their learning. © 2011 ACM.

As modern software systems operate in a highly dynamic context, they have to adapt their behaviour in response to changes in their operational environment or/and requirements. Triggering adaptation depends on detecting quality of service (QoS) violations by comparing observed QoS values to predefined thresholds. These threshold-based adaptation approaches result in late adaptations as they wait until violations have occurred. This may lead to undesired consequences such as late response to critical events. In this paper we introduce a statistical approach CREQA - Control Charts for the Runtime Evaluation of QoS Attributes. This approach estimates at runtime capability of a system, and then it monitors and provides early detection of any changes in QoS values allowing timely intervention in order to prevent undesired consequences. We validated our approach using a series of experiments and response time datasets from real world web services.

With the growth of Cloud computing, more and more companies are offering different cloud services. From the customer's point of view, it is always difficult to decide whose services they should use, based on users' requirements. Currently there is no software framework which can automatically index cloud providers based on their needs. In this work, we propose a framework and a mechanism, which measure the quality and prioritize Cloud services. Such framework can make significant impact and will create healthy competition among Cloud providers to satisfy their Service Level Agreement (SLA) and improve their Quality of Services (QoS).

Automatic layout can be a crucial support feature for complex diagramming tools. Adding suitable layout algorithms to diagramming tools is a complex task and meta-tools should incorporate these for reuse. We present MaramaALM, a generalised set of automatic layout mechanisms. This has been incorporated in the Eclipse-based Marama meta-toolset to support automatic layout in Marama diagrams. It provides an easy-to-use mechanism for tool developers to add such layouts to their generated tools. We describe our motivation for MaramaALM, our approach to its implementation and an example case study of using these tool extensions.

We examine five outreach programmes that introduce school students to Computer science. All downplay programming as a pre-requisite skill for engaging with Computer science, yet they use a wide variety of formats for reaching students, including contests, shows, magazine articles, and resources for teachers. We classify these different approaches, identifying the different ways they have been adapted to their target audience, and drawing out the common elements to provide guidance for similar initiatives. © 2011 Authors.

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the networked interconnection of everyday objects. IoT is an upcoming research field and is being regarded as the revolution in the world of communication because of its extensible applications in numerous fields. Due to open and self-assimilation nature of these networks they are highly prone to attacks. Because of this reason security is of primary concern here. The security attack can be of various types, the idea here is to prevent IoT networks from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The objective of Denial of Service (DoS) is to make the server resources unavailable to the intended user, and when several such DoS attacks are present in a network then the attack is known as a DDoS attack. Our strategy is to prevent DDoS attack in IoT networks by using Learning Automata (LA) concepts. In this paper, we present a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) which is used as a system model for IoT here. SOA provides a platform to the developers using which they can develop various applications for IoT without any concern regarding the nature of the objects, thereby acting as a middleware. The DDoS prevention strategy has been targeted for the SOA based architecture for IoT. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is effective in preventing DDoS attacks in IoT.

Gamification is not a newly emerging concept. Perhaps, it is a new term to some people. Gamification is a powerful new strategy to influence and motivate groups of people. It applies game mechanics to non-game activities to change the user's behavior of an application. It improves the engagement of user by keeping score of points earned through various activities on the application. The recent gamified websites or a related service such as Foursquare is a location-based application that pinpoints where you are and your activities. Users of the Foursquare can “check in” to various locations on their mobile phones and gain incentives like badges or deals. Gamification is utilised as a mean to build up user loyalty, and not so much to gain their long-term engagement. This article discusses how the gamification can help to drive the sustainability after a mobile application has been delivered and is in use. It is important to make mobile application continuously visible and sustainable if the concept of gamification has been used correctly. The more users can gain from the virtual and tangible rewards of using our application, the more we can be rewarded from our users. It also discusses how adding a “game layer” has improved the basic functions in society like educating people to become more responsible and helpful and use badges as virtual reward to users who contribute photos. Interactive mobile application designed to change the way of people report road accident cases with applying a simplicity and convenience principles. For instance, user just needs to snap photo and touch on screen to report a road accident case.

With the rapid development of Web services, Web service discovery becomes a significant challenge in the matching precision and efficiency. In this paper, we present a novel method in the view of users' requirements for Web Service discovery. We set up the requirement model firstly, so as to present users' requirements in details, then cluster the Web Services due to users' common requirements, and obtain corresponding Web services' QoS values. Thus, users can find their really needed Web services in an ordered list. The case study indicates the effect of our method, namely, in the view of users' requirements, we sort the candidate Services due to their functions and their QoS attributes in descending order. © 2011 IEEE.

The primary goal of requirements engineering research is to propose, develop, and validate effective solutions for important practical problems. However practice has shown that successful projects often take from 20-25 years to reach the stage of full industry adoption, while many other projects fizzle out and never advance beyond the initial research phase. In this interactive panel, teams of researchers representing several different requirements engineering research areas, bring ideas for technology transfer to a panel of industrial and government practitioners. The teams proceed through a series of interactive presentations and receive feedback from panelists. Underlying the game-show genre of the panel is the more serious goal to foster conversation between practitioners and researchers in order to improve the effectiveness of technology transfer in the requirements engineering community.

Extensive data generated by peers of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) needs to be analysed and processed in order to extract information that is meaningful to the user. Data processing techniques that achieve this goal on sensor nodes are required to operate while meeting resource constraints such as memory and power to prolong a sensor network’s lifetime. This survey serves to provide a comprehensive examination of such techniques, enabling developers of WSN applications to select and implement data processing techniques that perform efficiently for their intended WSN application. It presents a general analysis of the issue of energy conservation in sensor networks and an up-to-date classification and evaluation of data processing techniques that have factored in energy constraints of sensors. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.
