The delay tolerant mobile sensor network (DTMSN) is a new type of sensor network for pervasive information gathering. Although similar to conventional sensor networks in hardware components, DTMSN owns some unique characteristics such as sensor mobility, intermittent connectivity, etc. Therefore, traditional data gathering methods can not be applied to DTMSN. In this paper, we propose an efficient motion tendency-based data delivery scheme (MTAD) tailored for DTMSN. By using sink broadcast instead of GPS, MTAD obtains the information about the nodal motion tendency with small overhead. The information can then be used to evaluate the node's effective delivery ability and provide guidance for message transmission. MTAD also employs the message survival time to effectively manage message queues. Our simulation results show that, compared with other DTMSN data delivering approaches, MTAD achieves not only a relatively longer network lifetime but also a higher message delivery ratio with lower transmission overhead and data delivery delay.

Scientific applications like neuroscience data analysis are usually compute and data-intensive. With the use of globally distributed resources and suitable middlewares, we can achieve much shorter execution time, distribute compute and storage load, and add greater flexibility to the execution of these scientific applications than we could ever achieve in a single compute *** this paper, we present the processing of image registration (IR) for functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) studies on global grids. We characterize the application, list its requirements and transform it to a workflow. We then execute the application on Gridpsila5000 platform and present extensive performance results. We show that the IR application can have 1) significantly improved makespan, 2) distribution of compute and storage load among resources used, and 3) flexibility when executing multiple times on global Grids.

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have gained a lot of attention recently. Many efforts are made to design proper routing protocols for WMNs. Existing multi-radio multi-channel routing protocols utilize only one path for transmission, and some multi-path routing protocols consider only single channel situation, in which multi-path routing won't improve end-to-end throughput efficiently. In our paper, we propose a framework for distributed reactive routing protocol in WMNs, which utilizes multi-radio multi-channel technique, as well as multi-path transmission strategy. Dynamic channel assignment is used to avoid the inter-flow and intra-flow channel competition and interference. Our protocol establishes and maintains two or more channel-dimensional disjoint paths, and then every data flow is splitted into multiple paths, in order to increase the total end-to-end transmission throughput. Demo and NS2 simulations are carried out for the evaluation of the performance of our proposed protocol comparing with AODV and other related routing protocols. It is shown our proposal can increase end-to-end throughput significantly.

New knowledge in science and engineering relies increasingly on results produced by scientific software. Therefore, knowing how scientists develop and use software in their research is critical to assessing the necessity for improving current development practices and to making decisions about the future allocation of resources. To that end, this paper presents the results of a survey conducted online in October-December 2008 which received almost 2000 responses. Our main conclusions are that (1) the knowledge required to develop and use scientific software is primarily acquired from peers and through self-study, rather than from formal education and training; (2) the number of scientists using supercomputers is small compared to the number using desktop or intermediate computers; (3) most scientists rely primarily on software with a large user base; (4) while many scientists believe that software testing is important, a smaller number believe they have sufficient understanding about testing concepts; and (5) that there is a tendency for scientists to rank standard software engineering concepts higher if they work in large software development projects and teams, but that there is no uniform trend of association between rank of importance of software engineering concepts and project/team size.

We proposed in this paper an accurate and efficient approach for palmprint identification. In this method, a Gabor wavelet is first convolved with the palmprint image to produce a response image, where LBP is then applied to code the relation among the magnitude of wavelet response at central pixel with that of its neighbors. The method is fully tested using the public PolyU palmprint database. In the experiment, 3864 test images are identified by the proposed method against the 1158 templates. While palm code achieves only about 89% accuracy, over 96% accuracy is achieved by the proposed G-LBP approach. Our approach could identify a palmprint image within 200 ms.

Vehicle-to-vehicle communication among vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) plays an important role in providing a high level of safety and convenience to drivers. Geographic routing protocol has been identified to be suitable for VANETs because of the special nature of such networks, e.g., frequently changed network topology and high dynamic mobility. There is considerable functional research about geographic routing, but the node location security issues have not been vastly concentrated on so far. While selecting every hop, the performance and security can be impacted severely by false position because of the position information importance for geographic routing. Making use of directional antennas, we propose a novel detection mechanism capable of recognizing nodes faking about their positions in beacon message. By checking through which directional antenna beacon messages are received, ones' neighborhood can be easily divided into two groups. In addition, combined with the three malicious node detection rules, nodes can efficiently detect malicious nodes around them after exchanging neighbors grouping information with each others. As the evaluation based on simulations shows, our position verification system can detect malicious nodes successfully and can prevent attacks on geographic routing by false position.

This paper is based on a course run in the fall semester 2008 with students from Sweden and USA where they addressed an open problem in the health sector. Part of the course for the students has been to review how the collaboration actually worked and with special attention to the collaboration platform used. The background to the course and process of choosing the collaborative platform, ClockingIT, is presented. The students' review was informed by engineering education research in order to understand the role of the technology used in their collaboration. The methods adopted by the students are outlined including their application of the Collaborative Technology Fit framework as introduced in the thesis by Clear. The role of 'ClockingIT', its effectiveness in supporting collaboration and the effectiveness of 'students as researchers' as a method for insightful reflection are presented.

Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers and enables application service providers to lease data center capabilities for deploying applications depending on user QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud applications have different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of resource allocation policies and application scheduling algorithms at finer details in Cloud computing environments for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size is a challenging problem to tackle. To simplify this process, in this paper we propose CloudSim: an extensible simulation toolkit that enables modelling and simulation of Cloud computing environments. The CloudSim toolkit supports modelling and creation of one or more virtual machines (VMs) on a simulated node of a Data Center, jobs, and their mapping to suitable VMs. It also allows simulation of multiple Data Centers to enable a study on federation and associated policies for migration of VMs for reliability and automatic scaling of applications.

A group key agreement (GKA) protocol allows a set of users to establish a common secret via open networks. Observing that a major goal of GKAs for most applications is to establish a confiDential channel among group members, we revisit the group key agreement definition and distinguish the conventional (symmetric) group key agreement from asymmetric group key agreement (ASGKA) protocols. Instead of a common secret key, only a shared encryption key is negotiated in an ASGKA protocol. This encryption key is accessible to attackers and corresponds to different decryption keys, each of which is only computable by one group member. We propose a generic construction of one-round ASGKAs based on a new primitive referred to as aggregatable signaturebased broadcast (ASBB), in which the public key can be simultaneously used to verify signatures and encrypt messages while any signature can be used to decrypt ciphertexts under this public key. Using bilinear pairings, we realize an efficient ASBB scheme equippe d with useful properties. Following the generic construction, we instantiate a one-round ASGKA protocol tightly reduced to the decision Bilinear Diffie-Hellman Exponentiation (BDHE) assumption in the standard model. © International Association for Cryptologic Research 2009.

Distributed system emulators provide a paramount platform for testing of network protocols and distributed applications in clusters and networks of workstations. However, to allow testers to benefit from these systems, it is necessary an efficient and automatic mapping of hundreds, or even thousands, of virtual nodes to physical hosts-and the mapping of the virtual links between guests to physical paths in the physical environment. In this paper we present a heuristic to map both virtual machines to hosts and virtual links between virtual machines to paths in the real system. We define the problem we are addressing, present the solution for it and evaluate it in different usage scenarios.
