Scientific computing often requires the availability of a massive number of computers for performing large scale experiments. Traditionally, these needs have been addressed by using high-performance computing solutions and installed facilities such as clusters and super computers, which are difficult to setup, maintain, and operate. Cloud computing provides scientists with a completely new model of utilizing the computing infrastructure. Compute resources, storage resources, as well as applications, can be dynamically provisioned (and integrated within the existing infrastructure) on a pay per use basis. These resources can be released when they are no more needed. Such services are often offered within the context of a service level agreement (SLA), which ensure the desired quality of service (QoS). Aneka, an enterprise cloud computing solution, harnesses the power of compute resources by relying on private and public clouds and delivers to users the desired QoS. Its flexible and service based infrastructure supports multiple programming paradigms that make Aneka address a variety of different scenarios: from finance applications to computational science. As examples of scientific computing in the cloud, we present a preliminary case study on using Aneka for the classification of gene expression data and the execution of fMRI brain imaging workflow.

Maintenance of articular cartilage's functional mechanical properties ultimately depends on the balance between the extracellular matrix component biosynthesis, degradation, and loss. A variety of factors are known to modulate the rate of cartilage matrix synthesis (e.g., growth factors and stress/strain environment). In the present study, we develop an integrated mathematical model that quantifies biological processes within cartilage tissue modulated by insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). Specifically, the model includes IGF transport through a deforming porous media, competitive binding to binding proteins and cell receptors, and matrix macromolecule biosynthesis - particularly glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These newly synthesized matrix molecules are then able to modify the material properties of cartilage. The model is used to investigate the effect of synovial fluid IGF-I concentration on cartilage homeostasis. The results presented here suggest that GAG production can be rapidly "switched on" when the concentration of IGF-I reaches a certain threshold, while it is predicted that high receptor concentration leads to heterogeneous matrix production. As for the combined effect of IGF-I and mechanical loading on biosynthesis, the current model predicts that a loading regime with high strain magnitude (e.g., 10%) can achieve a synergistic effect on matrix protein production. Furthermore, dynamic loading is seen to promote spatial homogeneous GAG production. © 2009 ASCE.

Trust management has become a cornerstone for information security and privacy, to enable secure data sharing in pervasive healthcare systems. This paper propose. The use oy the opportunistic networks (oppnets) paradigm as a solution for communication and data dissemination in such environment. Oppnet allows communication among nodes by opportunistically connecting devices without relying on any pre-existing routing paths. Based on this feature, we argue that our recently proposed trust management scheme for pervasive computing can be used in wireless network-based pervasive healthcare environments to efficiently detect malicious devices in addition to providing trust between devices, and to adequately exploi. The recommendations from trustworthy devices. Using a distributed in-home pervasive healthcare application scenario, simulation experiments are conducted to asses. This paper is based on a course run in the fall semester 2008 with students from Sweden and USA where they addressed an open problem in the health sector. Part of the course for the students has been to review how the collaboration actually worked and with special attention to the collaboration platform used. The background to the course and process of choosing the collaborative platform, ClockingIT, is presented. The students' review was informed by engineering education research in order to understand the role of the technology used in their collaboration. The methods adopted by the students are outlined including their application of the Collaborative Technology Fit framework as introduced in the thesis by Clear. The role of 'ClockingIT', its effectiveness in supporting collaboration and the effectiveness of 'students as researchers' as a method for insightful reflection are presented. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, a reputation-based Grid workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to counter the effect of inherent unreliability and temporal characteristics of computing resources in large scale, decentralized Grid overlays. The proposed approach builds upon structured peer-to-peer indexing and overlay networking techniques to create a scalable wide-area networking of Grid sites for supporting dependable scheduling of applications. The scheduling algorithm considers reliability of a Grid resource as a statistical property, which is globally computed in the decentralized Grid overlay based on dynamic feedbacks or reputation scores assigned by individual service consumers (Grid Resource Brokers). The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to changing resource conditions and offer significant performance gains as compared to traditional approaches in the event of unsuccessful job execution or resource failure. We evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation. The results show that our scheduling technique can reduce the makespan up to 50% and successfully isolate the failure-prone resources from the system.

Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system.

Peering of Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) allow providers to rapidly scale-out to meet both flash crowds and anticipated increases in demand. Recent trends foster the need for a utility model for content delivery services to provide transparency, high availability, reduced investment cost, and improved content delivery performance. Analysis of prior work reveals only a modest progress in evaluating the utility for peering CDNs. In this paper, we introduce a utility model and measure the content-serving ability of the peering CDNs system. Our model assists in providing a customer view of the system's health for different traffic types. Our model also captures the traffic activities in the system and helps to reveal the true propensities of participating CDNs to cooperate in peering. Through extensive simulations we unveil many interesting observations on how the utility of the peering CDNs system is varied for different system parameters and provide incentives for their exploitation in the system design.

In this paper, we propose a fair scheduling solution for wireless mesh networks using multi-objective optimization technique. The main aim is to achieve fairness in wireless bandwidth utilization while also maximizing the overall system throughput in the wireless mesh network. We compare the proposed approach with existing solutions in a simulation environment.

In the past decade parallel disk systems have been highly scalable and able to alleviate the problem of disk I/O bottleneck, thereby being widely used to support a wide range of data-intensive applications. Optimizing energy consumption in parallel disk systems has strong impacts on the cost of backup power-generation and cooling equipment, because a significant fraction of the operation cost of data centres is incurred by energy consumption and cooling. Although flash memory is very energy-efficient compared to disk drives, flash memory is too expensive to use as a major component in large-scale storage systems. In other words, it is not a cost-effective way to make use of large flash memory to build energy-efficient storage systems. To address this problem, in this paper we proposed a hybrid disk architecture or HYBUD that integrates a non-volatile flash memory with buffer disks to build cost-effective and energy-efficient parallel disk systems. While the most popular data sets are cached in flash memory, the second most popular data sets can be stored and retrieved from buffer disks. HYBUD is energy efficient because flash memory coupled with buffer disks can serve a majority of incoming disk requests, thereby keeping a large number of other data disks in the low-power state for longer period times. Furthermore, HYBUD is cost-effective by the virtue of inexpensive buffer disks assisting flash memory to cache a huge amount of popular data. Experimental results demonstratively show that compared with two existing non-hybrid architectures, HYBUD provides significant energy savings for parallel disk systems in a very cost effective way.
