Whenever reliable transmissions are assured by retransmission mechanisms, higher packet error incur in additional energy consumption due to packet retransmissions, even though many monitoring applications can tolerate some loss in the quality of the received images. In fact, visual information retrieved from source nodes may have different relevancies for the applications, according to the desired monitoring tasks and the current sensors' poses and fields of view. We propose a semi-reliable energy-efficient hop-by-hop retransmission mechanism, where the reliability level of each packet is function of the relevance of the source nodes associated with DWT subbands. Doing so, some of the corrupted packets will not be retransmitted, saving energy of intermediate nodes with low impact to the visual monitoring quality. © 2012 IEEE.

The techniques of multi-agent system bring intelligence and flexibility to embedded agent/multi-agent embedded system connected to internet presents a great advantage. Advantage of such multi-agent systems improves the use of expanded infrastructure. Installing simplified agents in embedded systems was shown necessary due to increasing use of embedded devices. Multi-agent power management system is based on battery control and anticipation of replacement. Wireless transmission of ECG (electrocardiogram) signal via ZigBee (XBee modules) brings some problem into focus. This paper presents concept realized and tested on real equipment. Using smart mobile phone (today a widely used device) interaction/actoric between end user embedded agent and embedded master agent can give feedback about end users health in real-time. Similar, off-line monitoring device exists, but not connected to the network (Holter). Monitoring of patients in real-time can be enabled by such device that exhibits wireless communication and allows transmission of real-time source signal. The agent on which this paper refers to is program/firmware function in program code in small embedded system for monitoring ECG signal. Simplified agent activates the watchdog for battery alert. Main focus is to control the power consumption of WSN (Wireless Sensor Node). Power management has the intelligence middleware and allows timely to respond and inform the end users. Artificial intelligence is integrated in master agent that is element of embedded system cloud and a primal high level layer. Secondary layer is integrated in dedicated servers which respond to device clouds. LabVIEW application for signal processing provides robust and efficient environment for resolving ECG signal processing problem. These tool/application can be also used in other biomedical signal processing applications such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Electroencephalography (EEG). © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

A wide range of the database systems in use today are based on the relational model. As a consequence, more information used by those systems has been stored in multi relational object types. However, most of the traditional machine learning algorithms have not been originally proposed to handle this type of data. Aiming to propose better ways of handling the relational particularities of the data, this paper proposes a new relational clustering method based on relationship and attribute information. In our method, attributes have weights associated with their importance between the object types. An empirical analysis is performed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, comparing with two traditional methods for relational clustering. Three relational databases were used in the experiments. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The main idea behind this project is to provide a unified platform which will cover a complete process for embedded systems learning. A modular approach is considered for skills practice through supporting individualization in learning. This platform shall facilitate a novel development of universal approach in creative learning environment and knowledge management that encourage use of ICT. New learning model is challenging the education of engineers in embedded systems design through real-time experiments that stimulate curiosity with ultimate goal to support students to understand and construct their personal conceptual knowledge based on experiments. In addition to the technological approach, the use of cognitive theories on how people learn will help students to achieve a stronger and smarter adaptation of the subject. Applied methodology will be evaluated from the scientific point of view in parallel with the implementation in order to feedback results to the R&D.

This paper documents the case to address the distributed data storage and widely used unique identifiers which are in use from the beginning of databases and backend systems. The importance of uniqueness for object system identifiers is crucial for efficient data retrieval, storage and comparison. We are representing the new method for objects tagging using synergy mechanism between well known Geohash algorithm and Universally Unique Identifiers we call GHUUID (Geohash+UUID) gaining the agent system spatio-temporal identification of all data available. Multi-Agent systems in their nature strongly rely upon distributed databases across vast amount of data. Some of the interoperability issues are solved with usage of semantic web principles which can be cumbersome to implement and maintain. Most systems need the basic space-time correlation which can be the corner stone for the efficient analysis and data aligning regardless of objects stored and their nature. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, a neural network PCA method that integrates neural networks (NN) and principal component analysis (PCA) is used to detect faults in a wastewater treatment plant. The neural networks are used to calculate a non-linear and dynamic model of the process in normal operating conditions. PCA is used to generate monitoring charts based on the residuals calculated as the difference between the process measurements and the output of the networks. It can evaluate the current performance of the process and detects the faults. This technique has been applied to the simulation of a benchmark of a biological wastewater treatment process, a highly non-linear process. The simulation results clearly show the advantages of using this NNPCA monitoring in comparison with classical PCA monitoring. © 2012 IEEE.

We propose a novel and fast interactive segmentation methodology for computer vision applications. Basically, the proposed system performs the tracking of seeds so that multiple seeds can be acquired over time, substantially improving the segmentation results. Moreover, instead of image coordinates, the user indicates points in the real-world that become seeds in the image. These seeds can be indicated, for example using a laser pointer or a smart-phone. The seeds can then be tracked and used by a segmentation algorithm. Experiments using the Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow and the Fast Multi-Object Fuzzy Segmentation (Fast-MOFS) algorithm demonstrate that the proposed technique successfully segments images in real-time and improves the user ability to directly segment an object in the real world. The proposed system has a high performance, allowing it to be used with high frame rates in devices with low processing capability and/or with restricted power requirements.

The model of rotational mechanical system is laboratory model intended to emulate a flexible joint on a robot or spacecraft and is also useful in the study of vibration analysis and resonance. This system is similar in nature to the control problems encountered in large geared robot joints where flexibility is exhibited in the gearbox. The aim of this paper is to design such mechatronic system with considerable elasticity, for educational purposes, using computer aided design (CAD). Control algorithm is proposed for designed mechanical system in order to reduce effects of flexibility.

Emotionally annotated databases are repositories of multimedia documents with annotated affective content that elicit emotional responses in exposed human subjects. They are primarily used in research of human emotions, attention and development of stress-related mental disorders. This can be successfully exploited in larger processes like selection, evaluation and training of personnel for occupations involving high stress levels. Emotionally annotated databases are also used in multimodal affective user interfaces to facilitate richer and more intuitive human-computer interaction. Multimedia documents in emotionally annotated databases must have maximum personal ego relevance to be the most effective in all these applications. For this reason flexible construction of subject-specific of emotionally annotated databases is imperative. But current construction process is lengthy and labor intensive because it inherently includes an elaborate tagging experiment involving a team of human experts. This is unacceptable since the creation of new databases or modification of the existing ones becomes slow and difficult. We identify a positive correlation between the affect and semantics in the existing emotionally annotated databases and propose to exploit this feature with an interactive relevance feedback for a more efficient construction of emotionally annotated databases. Automatic estimation of affective annotations from existing semantics enhanced with information refinement processes may lead to an efficient construction of high-quality emotionally annotated databases.

The availability of a hydropower plant is very important. During the last few decades intermittent operation has increased, and power plants designed for base electrical energy production became the ones that cover peak power needs. This lead to greater strains on the stator package. Power generators are often very robust and can endure these new operating conditions but sometimes with reduced lifetime of stator package. Often, the main problem is a generator's cooling system. Older synchronous generators often have cooling system control with very rough steps. This paper describes such a generator, its problems and presents a possible solution for cooling system control.
