Bayesian networks have been widely applied to the feature selection problem. The existing approaches learn a Bayesian network from the available dataset and, afterward, utilize the Markov Blanket of the target feature as the criterion to select the relevant features. The Bayesian network learning can be viewed as a search and optimization procedure, where a search mechanism explores the space of all network structures while a scoring metric evaluates each candidate solution based on the likelihood. This paper investigates the application of an immune-inspired algorithm as the search procedure for obtaining high-quality Bayesian networks, motivated by the dynamical control of the population size and diversity along the search. Due to the resulting multimodal search capability, in a single run of the algorithm several subsets of features are obtained. Experiments on ten datasets were carried out in order to evaluate the proposed methodology in classification problems, and reduced-size subsets of features were produced.

In many real-world scenarios, in contrast to standard benchmark optimization problems, we may face some uncertainties regarding the objective function. One source of these uncertainties is a constantly changing environment in which the optima change their location over time. New heuristics or adaptations to already available algorithms must be conceived in order to deal with such problems. Among the desirable features that a search strategy should exhibit to deal with dynamic optimization are diversity maintenance, a memory of past solutions, and a multipopulation structure of candidate solutions. In this paper, an immune-inspired algorithm that presents these features, called dopt-aiNet, is properly adapted to deal with six newly proposed benchmark instances, and the obtained results are outlined according to the available specifications for the competition at the Congress on Evolutionary Computation 2009.

The presented study compares measured and calculated electromagnetic field in the surroundings of a large power transformer with the aim to avoid the necessity of measuring the field on subsequent units and use a computer model instead. The influences of various objects located in the vicinity of the transformer during measurement are also analyzed and are taken into account in a computer model.

In this paper we study the global robust output regulation problem for a class of nonlinear systems by output feedback control. The class of systems possesses nonlinear zero-dynamics and, is thus considerably larger than systems studied in the existing literature. As an illustration of our approach, we have applied our approach to the global robust asymptotic tracking problem of the hyperchaotic Lorenz system.

Need of blood pressure measurement is usable in wide spectrum of applications from physicians offices to home care applications. Many types of blood pressure measurement devices can be bought in electronics shops. All such devices are measurement devices which need to be in contact with human body (hand or foot mainly). Further they allow only one measurement per several minutes interval (typically 10 minutes). Our goal is to develop a small device for noninvasive continuous measurement of blood pressure. This device must be a small battery powered embedded system which measures a blood pressure during a long time period and sends this information to remote operator's stations. In this station the analysis of receiving video data is made for several types of usage. In current state we develop a small device to scan a video or a set of images with the NIR (Near Infra Red) CCD camera. The video data are transferred by wireless connection to the computer where they are analyzed. The first results provide an indication to be a right way to obtain exact continuous blood pressure information. In the future there exists a way to integrate this blood pressure measurement system to concurrently developed biotelemetric system architecture for patients and physicians called Guardian. For position monitoring in outdoor areas there is developed GPS module which informs about patient location and brings very precise time basis for other measuring modules of Guardian system and time synchronization.

Finite-time optimal control problems with quadratic performance index for linear systems with linear constraints can be transformed into Quadratic Programs (QPs). Model Predictive Control requires the online solution of such QPs. This can be obtained by using a QP solver or evaluating the associated explicit solution. Objective of this note is to shed some light on the complexity of the two approaches.

Wavefront aberration caused by turbulent or rapidly changing media can considerably degrade the performance of an imaging system. Adaptive optics can dynamically compensate these wavefront distortions and so provide corrected imaging. We developed an affordable adaptive optic system which combines CMOS sensor and LCOS display technology with the FPGA devices parallel computing capabilities. High speed and accurate wavefront sensor is fundamental part of any adaptive optic system. In this paper, an efficient FPGA implementation of the Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) algorithm is introduced which accomplish correlation based wavefront sensing. This architecture was implemented on a Spartan-3 FPGA and is capable to measure the incoming wavefront at the speed of sensor data acquisition speed.

This paper presents a comparative study between scale, rotation and translation invariant descriptors for shape representation and retrieval. Specifically, we studied Fourier, angular radial transform and image moment descriptors for shape representation. Since shape is one of the most widely used image feature exploited in content-based image retrieval systems, we studied for each descriptor, the number of coefficients needed for indexing and their retrieval performance. Results showed that moment descriptors present the best performance in both terms of shape representation quality as well as in the amount of required coefficients.

Most of the online courses nowadays are offered mainly in asynchronous mode, enabling students with the freedom of time and distance. Nonetheless, the drop-out rate for online courses is high. With online synchronous instruction students have both freedom of distance and punctuality of regular progress and the drop-out rate is found to be greatly reduced. However, there is a lack of online synchronous teaching pedagogies in the literature for teachers. This study aims to identify major issues that need to be considered in online synchronous instruction environments using observations of real online synchronous instruction in a physical setup. This paper then recommends some pedagogical guidelines for effective online synchronous teaching.

The biclustering technique was developed to avoid some of the drawbacks presented by standard clustering techniques. Given that biclustering requires the optimization of at least two conflicting objectives and that multiple independent solutions are desirable as the outcome, a few multi-objective evolutionary algorithms for biclustering were proposed in the literature. However, apart from the individual characteristics of the biclusters that should be optimized during their construction, several other global aspects should also be considered, such as the coverage of the dataset and the overlap among biclusters. These requirements will be addressed in this work with the MOM-aiNet+ algorithm, which is an improvement of the original multi-objective multipopulation artificial immune network denoted MOM-aiNet. Here, the MOM-aiNet+ algorithm will be described in detail, its main differences from the original MOM-aiNet will be highlighted, and both algorithms will be compared, together with three other proposals from the literature.
