With the advent of DNA microarrays, it is now possible to use the microarrays data for tumor classification. Yet previous works have not use the nonnegative information of gene expression data. In this paper, we propose a new method for tumor classification using gene expression data. In this method, we first select genes using nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) and sparse NMF (SNMF). Then we extract features of the selected gene data by virtue of NMF and SNMF. At last, support vector machines (SVM) was applied to classify the tumor samples based on the extracted features. To better fit for classification aim, a modified SNMF algorithm is also proposed. The experimental results on three microarray datasets show that the method is efficient and feasible.

This paper presents an algorithm to approximate a solid model by a hierarchical set of bounding ellipsoids having optimal shape and volume approximation errors. The ellipsoid-tree is constructed in a top-down splitting framework. Starting from the root of hierarchy the volume occupied by a given model is divided into k sub-volumes where each is approximated by a volume bounding ellipsoid and will be later subdivided into k ellipsoids for the next level in hierarchy. The difficulty for implementing this algorithm comes from how to evaluate the volume of an ellipsoid outside the given model effectively and efficiently (i.e., the outside-volume-error). A new method - analytical computation based - is presented in this paper to compute the outside-volume-error. One application of ellipsoid-tree approximation has also been given at the end of the paper.

This study presents a performance analysis of a neural observer applied to speed and radial position controls of an induction-type bearingless motor with divided windings. The speed and radial control actions are carried out in conjunction with current control in the windings. The neural flux observer aims at compensating possible parametric variations of the machine caused by agents such as temperature or nucleus saturation. Control and estimation of flux are executed by a program developed in ANSI C language. The following resources were used in the DSP: the analog/digital converter, the PWM outputs and the RS-232 parallel and serial interfaces, which are responsible, respectively, for programming the DSP and capturing data using the supervisory system. Compared with a fixed parameter, the observer validates the proposed method.

This article utilizes near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) technology to quantificationally analyze protein content of chocolate, using genetic support vector regression (GSVR) to build spectrum calibration model. GSVR first adopts genetic algorithm to select the efficiency wavelength regions, and then applies linear support vector regression (SVR) to establish a calibration model with the chosen wavelength regions. At the same time SVR method is used to make calibration model for whole spectrum as comparison. 160 samples of 8 typical varieties of chocolates are selected in the experiment. 128 samples are used to train and the remainders are predicting samples. 12 GSVR calibration models and a SVR calibration model with the whole spectrum region are established, and all GSVR models' root mean square error in cross validation (RMSECV) and correlative coefficient ( r ) are better than SVR model's. The best GSVR model, whose RMSECV and r are 0.9767, 0.2565, respectively, is picked out among 12 models as final calibration model. In the predicting process, the GSVR model, whose root mean square error (RMSE) and mean error are 0.2454, 0.1968, respectively, is more robust in contrast to SVR whose RMSE and mean error are 0.2933, 0.2165, respectively.

This paper presents ontlology-based architecture for pattern recognition in the context of static source code analysis. The proposed system has three subsystems: parser, OWL ontologies and analyser. The parser subsystem translates the input coded to AST that is constructed as an XML tree. The OWL ontologies define code patterns and general programming concepts. The analyser subsystem constructs instances of the input code as ontology individuals and asks the reasoner to classify them. The experience gained in the implementation of the proposed system and some practical issues are discussed. The recognition system successfully integrates the knowledge representation field and static code analysis. resulting in greater flexibility of the recognition system.

This paper is concerned with the variance-constrained controller design problem for a class of uncertain nonlinear stochastic systems with possible actuator faults. The stochastic nonlinearities described by statistical means are quite general that include several well-studied classes of nonlinearities as special cases. A model of actuator failures is adopted which is more practical than the traditional outage one. A linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is proposed to solve the multiobjective fault-tolerant controller design problem, where both the exponential stability and the steady-state state variance indices are simultaneously guaranteed. Within the developed LMI framework, a sufficient condition for the solvability of the robust control problem is obtained. The explicit expression of the desired controllers is also parameterized and a single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model is used to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed design approach.

In this paper the quadrotor dynamic model with nonlinear inputs is presented. Deadzone and saturation nonlinear inputs are considered for the quadrotor reflected to the actuators. The goal is to obtain a faithful mathematical representation of the mechanical system for system analysis and control design, not only in hover as presented in many works, but also in motion when take-off, land and flight for aerial navigation task. The model was implemented in Matlab/Simulink simulation model to optimize the design and to project control. Simulations of the model show that the nonlinear inputs must be considered in the control project. © 2008 IEEE.

In this study, we investigate the diffusion of carbon (C) and other elements into steel substrates (Impax Supreme?) during diamond chemical vapour deposition (CVD). The substrate temperature varied from 700 to 850C by plasma power manipulations to enable the correlation of substrate temperature with diffusion length and depth of the above mentioned critical elements into steel during film growth conditions. Methane concentration is also a parameter which has been considered during the parametric analysis. The crystalline compounds formed during the diamond growth process were studied using XRD analysis. In addition, SIMS technique is used with depth profiling to monitor the diffusion of elements induced by the process. The results obtained enabled to improve traditional understanding about the mechanisms relating to diamond deposition on steel substrates using CVD processes. © 2008, Inderscience Publishers.

Time Modulated Chemical Vapour Deposition. (TMCVD) process regime has been used to deposit diamond coatings onto commercially available tungsten carbide tool inserts. The TMCVD process was developed in our laboratories so that diamond films with fine grains could be deposited. It accomplishes this by promoting secondary nucleation during larger methane flow modulations. The average surface roughness of the diamond coatings were correlated with the cutting performance of the coatings when dry machining of graphite. Inserts coated were characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy and were tested for turning performance using graphite as the workpiece material. The cutting forces were measured by the DynoWare data acquisition system. Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) inserts were also used for comparison. Repeated turning tests showed that the surface roughness of the coatings is a limiting factor when achieving better chip flow during machining. Copyright © 2008 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

During complex measurements on synchronous hydro-generator 35MVA, among other measurements, temperature measurement of stator winding end was realized. The real aim of this temperature measurement was to determine influence of excitation winding on armature windings during different operation points. This paper describes the measurement procedure, measurement system and some problems that occurred during this measurement.
