In a clinical context, dementia refers to a syndrome of acquired cognitive deterioration that can be associated with various potential stages of the disease. The two most common variations of this disease are Alzheimer type dementia and Vascular type dementia, although there are other forms known as mixed dementia. All of these forms can be associated with different patterns of anatomical affectation, different risk factors, multiple diagnostic characteristics and multiple profiles of neuropsychological tests, making the differential diagnosis of dementias (DDD) very complex. In this paper we propose new diagnostic tools based on a data fusion scheme using artificial neural networks and ensemble systems, which offer important advantages referring to other computational solutions. We have designed two HUMANN-S based systems, with capacity of processing missing data. We explore their ability for DDD using a battery of cognitive and functional/instrumental neuropsychological tests. We carried out a comparative study between these systems and an clinical expert, reaching these systems a higher level of performance than the expert. Our proposal is a smart and effective complementary method to assist the diagnosis of dementia both in specialized care as well as in primary care centres.

The social network analysis (SNA) is an approach that can be applied as a complement to other analysis (such as statistical) in order to obtain other valuable information. The social network analysis has been used in several initiatives showing that it is an approach that can contribute in building the semantic web. Within the project Technologies Applied to Electronics Teaching (TAEE) there are biannual conferences (it has been organized since 1996) and have accumulated a significant amount of data resulting from the conferences held. All of this information constitutes a data source that should be exploited and that can provide meaningful information. In this document we describe, how to social network analysis has been used on data sources generated by user communities, in order to obtain some semantic artifacts, like ontologies. Also describes how to was applied the social network analysis and its metrics on the information generated in the TAEE congresses to answer a set of questions (What are the relationships and the level of cohesion of the different organizations (at the level of Spain and across continents) involved in TAEE? How have evolutioned the thematics covered in the conference?, What are the new ontological additions in technology over the years?, and How have evolutioned the thematics in the research and studies related to teaching electronics?) formulated by the organizers of the congresses and that through other approaches would have been a large task and complicated. The answers to the questions can provide us important information about the behavior and characteristics of the elements present in TAEE conferences, furthermore being an element for making decisions on future initiatives with the same style of TAEE.

Passive decoy-state quantum key distribution with practical light sources

Decoy states have been proven to be a very useful method for significantly enhancing the performance of quantum key distribution systems with practical light sources. Although active modulation of the intensity of the laser pulses is an effective way of preparing decoy states in principle, in practice passive preparation might be desirable in some scenarios. Typical passive schemes involve parametric down-conversion. More recently, it has been shown that phase-randomized weak coherent pulses (WCP) can also be used for the same purpose [M. Curty et al., Opt. Lett. 34, 3238 (2009).] This proposal requires only linear optics together with a simple threshold photon detector, which shows the practical feasibility of the method. Most importantly, the resulting secret key rate is comparable to the one delivered by an active decoy-state setup with an infinite number of decoy settings. In this article we extend these results, now showing specifically the analysis for other practical scenarios with different light sources and photodetectors. In particular, we consider sources emitting thermal states, phase-randomized WCP, and strong coherent light in combination with several types of photodetectors, like, for instance, threshold photon detectors, photon number resolving detectors, and classical photodetectors. Our analysis includes as well the effect that detection inefficiencies and noise in the form of dark counts shown by current threshold detectors might have on the final secret key rate. Moreover, we provide estimations on the effects that statistical fluctuations due to a finite data size can have in practical implementations.

Flexural-torsional resonance mode of a chip cantilever system: Applications to nanomachining

Cantilever vibration modes beyond the first harmonic of the standard flexural vibration mode were intensely explored in atomic force microscopy (AFM) during the past years. One example for this development is the usage of the torsional resonance mode. Further, the lateral bending mode was investigated and applied in AFM imaging and measurement. Here, the authors report on an extraordinary resonance mode of a cantilever chip system. In this mode the cantilever performs flexural as well as torsional movements. The mode was investigated in detail by scanning laser-Doppler vibrometry. It was found that there exists an intermediate stripelike region between the cantilever and the chip, which significantly contributes to the mechanical vibrations. In addition simulations using the finite-element method were performed to explore possible natural modes of the chip cantilever system. Nanomachining was performed on samples in a highly efficient manner with help of the above described resonance mode. The atomic force microscope could be specialized for material processing tasks on the micro- and nanometer scales utilizing this resonance mode. © 2009 American Vacuum Society.

Extended models of the W-PESQ method are presented which are capable of assessing the subjective quality of noisy speech signals sampled at 48 kHz. Two methods are proposed: a version backward compatible with the W-PESQ standard, called EW-PESQ(E), and another, called EW-PESQ(R), in which the original psychoacoustic models are entirely replaced with alternative formulations available in the literature. Performance figures of both the EW-PESQ(E) and the EW-PESQ(R) in predicting the subjective quality of extrawide-band speech (sampled at 48 kHz) corrupted with broad-band and environmental noise are reported. In both cases the results obtained reveal a strong correlation (approximately 97%) with mean opinion scores.

In order to provide the fastest search for optimal solution, both the structure and the parameters of genetic algorithms (GA) should be optimized. The advantage of recently introduced micro-genetic algorithms (μGA) is that they operate with smaller genetic populations than standard GA. This paper describes the method of determining an optimal (best possible) mutation interval for μGA based on the analysis of the influence of mutation on the performance of GA and μGA. The results obtained analytically and numerically for a selected vector optimization problem show the practical value of the method. © 2009 EUCA.

The experiments aimed to compare data driven models for the valuation of residential premises were conducted using KEEL (Knowledge Extraction based on Evolutionary Learning) system. Twelve different regression algorithms were applied to an actual data set derived from the cadastral system and the registry of real estate transactions. The 10-fold cross validation and statistical tests were applied. The lowest values of MSE provided models constructed and optimized by means of support vector machine, artificial neural network, decision trees for regression and quadratic regression, however differences between them were not statistically significant. Worse performance revealed algorithms employing evolutionary fuzzy rule learning. The experiments confirmed the usefulness of KEEL as a powerful tool with its numerous evolutionary algorithms together with classical learning approaches to carry out laborious investigation on a practical problem in a relatively short time.

In this paper we show how to accurately track position and orientation of a mobile robot using positioning only RF ultrasound transceiver system and dead-reckoning. The solution is based on geometrical displacement of the positioning device from the axis of rotation of the robot which brings dependency in position of the device and robot's orientation and enables the correction of the absolute orientation of the robot. Estimation is done via extended Kalman filter with variable discretization time because of stochastic nature of measurement arrival times. We describe and analyze the main sources of noise in odometry and position device readings. We also suggest the method for measurement outlier elimination derived from empirical measurement analysis. Experimental verification of the proposed method is presented that yields position error aprox. 1plusmn2.5 centimeters and 1plusmn2 degrees.

This paper presents the solution to a quadrotor control problem based on a discrete automaton that, in combination with classical PID controllers, creates a hybrid control system. Some modifications to the known and widely used mathematical model of quadrotor aircrafts are also discussed in this paper. The paper shows an open loop control concept that flies the aircraft into looping. Finally, the performance of the suggested control scheme is tested with simulations.
