We propose a new method of speech enhancement based on auto gain control (AGC) using two channel inputs to deal with transient noises. Auto gain control is considered to be relatively ineffective for reducing noises that are superimposed on speech. Nevertheless, it offers advantages for addressing problems posed by musical noise and spectral distortion. This method combines two operations for obtaining accurate gain. One is spectral subtraction for two-channel input (2chSS);the other is self-offset of the noise with pre-whitening. This study also addresses a coherence based post-filter to reduce uncorrelated noise components among channels. The proposed method is evaluated in experiments across three noise conditions in which (i) impulsive noises, (ii) stationary car noise, and (iii) speech noise are present, respectively. Objective measures and spectrograms demonstrate marked improvements over other two-microphone based methods, but subjective preference tests reveal that the proposed method is less preferred than the equivalent of a nonprocessed signal in the case of stationary car noise (ii). The performance of the proposed method and the conventional 2chSS were even in the case of speech noise (iii). These results of subjective tests reflect some disadvantages of the AGC processing. Those drawbacks involve degradation of noise consistency in stationary noise conditions and residual noises in desired speech segments. Nevertheless, subjective tests in the case of noise (i) demonstrate that the proposed method is the most preferred among the methods compared here. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed particularly for this noise condition. © 2006 IEEE.

Multi-spectral fusion focused on the task of image enhancement by processing raw data collected at various electromagnetic bands via passive sensors. Passive spectral sensors collect information about the scene based on the inherently reflected or emitted energy of the scene and is represented by spectral distributions and intensities. These systems can be designed so that they provide collocated information through common optics or other means (algorithms). This paper addresses the issue of multi-spectral pixel-level fusion to enhance the visual quality of the "combined" (fused) image data as compared to that of each single spectral band image data. We propose a knowledge-based fusion methodology. We also make the implicit assumption that visually superior image data are also better image data for processing by most types of algorithms.

In this work we realized the method multistage mixing of speech signals and conducted the series of computational experiments at wav-files. As a result of experiments we received dependences time of mixing speech signals, which are contained in wav-files, from amount wav-files and their descriptions. We formed requirements to the speech signals, that mixed accordant with the method of multistage mixing, which allow decreasing time of mixing of speech signals.

A heuristic algorithm for multiple vehicles routing problem with stochastic demand is proposed and the goal is to minimize the total traveling cost. Two-phase method is adopted to deal with this problem. In the first phase, an algorithm is proposed to partition customers into clusters, and the main task of the second phase is to design an effective routing through each cluster of customers to minimize the total expected traveling cost. Both the a priori strategy and the reoptimization strategy are used to obtain the optimal routing. The experiment results indicate that this method can produce solutions of good quality and is an effective algorithm for the multiple vehicles routing problem with stochastic demand

The high encoding efficiency of H.264 comes from many new video encoding technologies such as adopting variable block size in the process of motion estimation and compensation. But this increases the complexity of H.264 encoder greatly. The high encoding complexity limits the application of H.264 in the domain of real time video encoding. In order to decrease the complexity of H.264 encoder greatly, this paper proposes a fast inter mode selection algorithm to speed up the H.264 encoder. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the complexity of the inter mode decision remarkably while incurring little, if any, loss in quality

The H∞-based and classical engineering approaches to flight control law design are compared regarding a similarity between the derived controllers structure. The integrated flight and aeroelastic control laws have been designed using the H∞ synthesis. The engineering control laws for the same aeroservoelactic aircraft model and flight conditions have been designed using a conventional control law structure with the rigid body mode feedbacks and the notch and lag filters for the structural dynamics modes. For comparison purposes the H∞-based control laws have been modified using the order reduction techniques and simplifications separately in each control law channel. A special attention has been given for comparison of the control laws designed for the rigid body approximation of an aircraft model. The μ, analysis method have been used to compare the closed-loop system robustness to flight regime variation, modelling errors and uncertainties of frequencies and damping in structural modes. The gain/phase margins and the complexity of gain scheduling have been also compared. Copyright © 2005 by British Crown.

A traditional representation of aerodynamic characteristics based on the concept of aerodynamic derivatives becomes inadequate at high angles of attack due to significant dynamic effects generated by separated and vortical flow. The main difficulty in an application of aerodynamic derivatives at these conditions is linked with their strong dependence on frequency and amplitude of oscillations. To describe these dependencies the mathematical model for aerodynamic characteristics in the time domain should be dynamic and nonlinear. To capture frequency effects the lateral/directional aerodynamic characteristics are represented in the form of differential equations and applied for the open- and closed-loop dynamic analysis. The control of dynamical systems with inherent non-linear characteristics has motivated research in non-linear control theory. Two main approaches to dealing with uncertainties in control systems design are adaptive and robust control. In this paper, discrete direct adaptive control of unknown non-linear SISO systems is considered. The controller is implemented using a fuzzy neural network. The control concept is tested on a laboratory pilot plant and compared to a standard discrete FED Takahashi controller. © 2005 IEEE.

In today’s hyper-competitive business environments virtual organisations are becoming highly dynamic and unpredictable. Individuals may want to work together across organisation boundaries but do not have much prior knowledge of others. The semantic web and its associated new standards appear very promising as candidates to support a new generation of virtual organisations. In this paper a behaviour based organisation, Social Behaviour Networks, is proposed. In order to sense the changes on the web this paper focuses on a virtual sensor for allocating tasks amongst agents based on the announcements of tasks and capabilities of agents in DAML (DARPA Agent Markup Language). Due to the autonomy of agents the announcements are often vague and in a very high dimensional space. The ontology can provide useful information for achieving variable-resolution sensing from an individual agent’s perspective and reducing the dimensions of the virtual space. The variable-resolution virtual sensors are based on hierarchical clustering analysis to reveal the level of similarity of announcements in the web. © 2005 The authors. All rights reserved.
