Single-phase-to-ground sub-cycle faults in the distribution network can be located using voltage sag fault location. This paper illustrates how a sensitivity study of measurement imperfections can be used to quantify the impact of sub-cycle faults on voltage sag based fault location. Our results suggest that there is a complex relationship between factors influencing error in fault location because the design of the study covered a wide range of conditions. The more complicated, higher order interactions have a stronger influence on error than any particular input factor alone.

In this paper, the problem of energy-to-peak state estimation for a class of discrete-time Markov jump recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with randomly occurring sensor saturations is investigated. A practical phenomenon of nonsynchronous jumps between RNNs modes and desired mode-dependent filters is considered and a nonstationary mode transition among the filters is used to model the non-synchronous jumps to different degrees that are also mode-dependent. The sensor saturation occurs in a probabilistic way according to a Bernoulli sequence. Sufficient conditions on the existence of the nonsynchronous filters are obtained such that the filtering error system is stochastically stable and achieves a prescribed energy-to-peak performance index. A numerical example is presented to verify the theoretical findings.

The paper describes a mathematical model of PHA biopolymer production process by Pseudomonas putida KT2442 where the octanoic acid is used as a substrate. The process is modeled using mass balances for fed-batch cultivation. Proper fitting to experimental data is obtained by identification of the model parameters. The model exhibits good agreement with experiments and its possible application for control is considered in the paper.

A novel derivative-free algorithm for solving quasilinear systems is presented. It resembles "classical" optimization approach but greatly simplifies computation, resulting in fast execution and numerical stability. Though the global convergence cannot be guaranteed, it turns out that the presented algorithm finds a solution as successfully as other commonly accepted methods. The algorithm is clearly developed and mathematically founded, and its properties are examined by comparisons with other methods.

This paper presents the usage of a nanorobotic handling technique for the transfer of individual copper-nanowires with diameters between 150nm and 400nm and length of about 10 mu m. Handling and assembly are inside the SEM and use electron beam induced deposition as well as focused ion beam milling. The handled nanowires are used to assembly a NEMS device, namely an electrostatic switch design, where the nanowire acts as switching contact. Working principle, reproducibility and specific values of the switches are investigated, as well as the conductivity of the nanowires themself.

Energy plants represent large energy consumers with a wide array of energy needs, assets (e.g. boilers, chillers, storage, on-site generation), and constraints on operations. An innovative energy management system for energy plants is presented in this paper. Through predictive optimization of plant assets, energy analytics, pricing signals, and historical and realtime data, the online energy management system supplies energy plants with salient hourly, real-time recommendations and enables “what-if” analysis to achieve improved economic efficiency. Within a systems context, the paper draws upon ideas from power systems and highlights technical issues related to plant optimization. The paper also describes actual implementations of the energy management solution at two energy plants in the US, providing economic details and an analysis of the savings achieved.

The in-line measurement of COD and NH 4 -N in the WWTP inflow is crucial for the timely monitoring of biological wastewater treatment processes and for the development of advanced control strategies for optimized WWTP operation. As a direct measurement of COD and NH 4 -N requires expensive and high maintenance in-line probes or analyzers, an approach estimating COD and NH 4 -N based on standard and spectroscopic in-line inflow measurement systems using Machine Learning Techniques is presented in this paper. The results show that COD estimation using Radom Forest Regression with a normalized MSE of 0.3, which is sufficiently accurate for practical applications, can be achieved using only standard in-line measurements. In the case of NH 4 -N, a good estimation using Partial Least Squares Regression with a normalized MSE of 0.16 is only possible based on a combination of standard and spectroscopic in-line measurements. Furthermore, the comparison of regression and classification methods shows that both methods perform equally well in most cases.

In this study, brain, and gait dynamic information were combined and used for diagnosis and monitoring of Parkinson's disease (the most important Neurodegenerative Disorder). Analysis of the information corresponding to a prescribed movement involving tremor, and the related changes in brain connectivity is novel and original. Analytically, developing a space-time nonlinear adaptive system which fuses brain and gait information algorithmically is proposed here for the first time. The overall dynamic system will be constrained by the clinical impressions of the patient symptoms embedded in a knowledge-based system. The entire complex constrained problem were solved to enable a powerful model for recognition and monitoring of Parkinson's disease and establishing appropriate rules for its clinical following up.

Research related to diver safety, navigation and monitoring has been identified as crucial for advancing diving activities. These issues are usually dealt with by pairing up divers and adopting well defined rules for diving operations to reduce the chance of accidents. However, during more challenging dives (such as technical dives) these procedures may not be sufficient to ensure almost accident-free operations, for the divers must manoeuvre in complex 3D environments, carry cumbersome equipment, and focus attention on operational details. In this work it is stated that research and technological development in the area of cognitive robotics can significantly contribute to the effectiveness and safety of diving operations. The current research performed in LABUST is based on an autonomous surface platform for following divers and transmitting GPS signal to the underwater. Future envisioned applications include the development of a cognitive autonomous diving buddy consisting of both the surface platform and an underwater vehicle that will serve as diving "guide", "slave" and "observer". © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
