On recent years, the educational paradigm of electrical and computer engineering has undergone a significant transformation with the advent and the exploitation of computer and communication technologies. Such transformation was necessitated in order to harmonize the learning process with the needs of the daily life. As a result, E-learning has been adopted and has added two major aspects to the learning process: 1) Interactivity;owing to the integration of simulation and multimedia technologies. 2) Ubiquity;owing to the integration of synchronous and asynchronous communication tools, and remote laboratories. Thereby, thanks to E-learning students incentives toward learning have increased. There is no doubt that practical sessions have an intrinsic role in electrical and computer engineering education;they augment the learning outcomes by strengthening the understanding of scientific concepts and theories. However, cost and administration burdens have hindered the adoption of practical sessions in engineering education until the appearance of remote laboratories. Remote laboratories have tackled these concerns by bringing practical sessions online and providing workbenches unconstrained by neither geographical nor time considerations. For these reasons, remote laboratories have proliferated among many universities and institutes around the world to be adopted in most of the disciplines of electrical and computer engineering curricula. A study carried out by the authors deduced that most of the developed remote laboratories around the world are based on common prototypes that are subsets of a common architecture, which is going to be the main topic of this paper. The paper reports on the common prototypes of today's remote laboratories for electrical and computer engineering education and addresses the most outstanding developments for the multidisciplinary applications that are based on such prototypes. This paper is devoted to the astronomical systems analysis and object detection in images acquired by these systems. It brings general overview of object detection methods used in digital image processing and focuses on different approach via. mathematical statistics. Astronomical systems analysis introduces statistical test for Poisson distribution and False Discovery Rate used in multiple hypothesis testing. Mentioned methods are firstly used for analysis of the dark frames. These results are then used for the purpose of object detection. Proposed methods are applied to the model data and then to the real images acquired by MAIA (Meteor Automatic Imager and Analyzer) system.

In this paper, a neural network PCA method that integrates neural networks (NN) and principal component analysis (PCA) is used to detect faults in a wastewater treatment plant. The neural networks are used to calculate a non-linear and dynamic model of the process in normal operating conditions. PCA is used to generate monitoring charts based on the residuals calculated as the difference between the process measurements and the output of the networks. It can evaluate the current performance of the process and detects the faults. This technique has been applied to the simulation of a benchmark of a biological wastewater treatment process, a highly non-linear process. The simulation results clearly show the advantages of using this NNPCA monitoring in comparison with classical PCA monitoring.

This paper analyzes some basic issues involving the application of discontinuous control techniques for controlling fractional order systems (FOS). With reference to a simple class of SISO perturbed processes, we compare the performance of two distinct approaches, namely the “fractional sliding manifold” (FSM) approach, and the “fractional dynamic input extension” (FDIE) approach. The latter, which is the main new contribution of this paper, is shown to provide for the finite time convergence property of the systems' state. Remarkably, this approach also attenuates the chattering phenomenon by leading to a continuous, although obviously non-smooth, control action. The performance of the two methodologies under investigation are determined by means of Lyapunov approach. Additionally, we derive two new results involving the application of second-order sliding mode control techniques in the context of SISO FOS, and the application of the unit-vector methodology for controlling uncertain multivariable FOS. The presented analysis is supported by simulation results.

We discuss methods for modeling and removal of noise in astronomical images. For its favorable properties, we exploit the undecimated wavelet representation and apply noise suppression in this domain. Usually, the noise analysis of the studied imaging system is carried out in the spatial domain. However, noise in astronomical data is non-Gaussian, and thus the noise model parameters need to be estimated directly in the wavelet *** derive equations for estimating the sample moments for non-Gaussian noise in the wavelet domain. We consider that the sample moments in the spatial domain are known from the noise analysis and that the model parameters are estimated by using the method of moments. © 2012 SPIE and IS&T.

Establishing performance metrics is a key part of a systematic design process. In particular, specifying metrics useful for quantifying performance in the ongoing efforts towards biomolecular circuit design is an important problem. Here we address this issue for the design of a fast biomolecular step response that is uniform across different cells and widely different environmental conditions using a combination of simple mathematical models and experimental measurements using single-cell time-lapse microscopy. We evaluate two metrics, the difference of the step response from an ideal step and the relative difference between multiple realizations of the step response, that can provide a single number to measure performance. We use a model of protein production-degradation to show that these performance metrics correlate with response features of speed and noise. Finally, we work through an experimental methodology to estimate these metrics for step responses that have been acquired for inducible protein expression circuits in E. coli. These metrics will be useful to evaluate biomolecular step responses, as well as for setting similar performance measures for other design goals.

Animals use stochastic search strategies to find a potential nest or to localize the food source. Animals do not rely much on the environmental cues or their sensory inputs. Since their cognitive capabilities are rather limited, search strategies are usually simplistic and stochastic. And yet such simple search strategies result in high efficiency in finding potential targets in limited time intervals. Similar problems with perception of the environment and limited computational power and sensory inputs are observed on the mobile robots used in search scenarios. In spite of their limitations, such robotic systems usually perform deterministic search strategies which heavily depend on environmental cues and sensory input. The research question we are addressing in this paper is which stochastic search strategy has the best performance in terms of area coverage and can stochastic search strategies outperform deterministic search strategies.

Purpose: The analysis of syndrome distribution and the association between symptom((signs))-syndrome in chronic gastritis (CG) patients can provide references for research about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis and treatment of CG. Method: This paper applies the investigation method of clinical epidemiology, adopts probability statistics method and comes up with the concept of associated density to conduct association analysis of symptom-syndrome. Result: In the distribution of syndromes patients who have a single syndrome occupy 64.7% of the whole sample;some symptoms have been selected out, of which the associated density is more than 0.6. Conclusion: Through this comparison of the values, we found the obvious one-way relationship of the symptoms (signs) and syndromes, and the results are in line with traditional Chinese medicine theory. This method effectively complements and supports traditional Chinese medicine point of view and hypothesis.

A covariance matching method for continuous-time errors-in-variables system identification from discrete-time data is analyzed. The asymptotic normalized covariance matrix, valid for a large number of data and a small sampling interval, is evaluated. This involves the evaluation of a covariance matrix of estimated covariance elements and estimated derivatives of such elements, and large parts of the paper are devoted to this task. © 2012 IFAC.

Electrochemical dual layer capacitors, also known by their market names Supercapacitors and Ultracapacitors are perspective technology for many uses, for instance in power saving circuits for electric propulsion systems, short-term energy storage systems, systems for extending battery lifetime and other similar uses. Although they can be used connected directly to a power converter DC link, in most cases they are connected to the DC link through a separate power converter. In use, such an EDLC and power converter assembly, due to EDLC specifics, must reliably operate in numerous operating points, unlike a typical power electronic converter. Such a power converter operation entails many control issues. Some of them are considered in this paper.
