In this paper, applications of the interacting multiple model (IMM) nonlinear filters to ultra-tightly coupled GPS/INS integrated navigation system. An ultra-tight GPS/INS architecture involves the integration of in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components from the correlator of a GPS receiver with the INS data. The error caused by linearization as in the extended Kalman filter (EKF) can be avoided using the unscented Kalman filter (UKF), which employs a set of sigma points by deterministic sampling, can efficiently deal with the nonlinear problem. The interacting multiple model (IMM) has the configuration that runs in parallel several model-matched state estimation filters, which exchange information (interact) at each sampling time. The use of IMM provides the appropriate value of process noise covariance so as to maintain good estimation accuracy and tracking capability. Performance assessment for EKF/UKF and IMMEKF/IMMUKF is carried out. The results show that the proposed IMMUKF algorithm demonstrates remarkable improvement in navigation estimation accuracy as compared to the conventional approaches.

A new tool has been developed for comparison and evaluation of medical images based on image registration and edge detection algorithms. The tool performance has been demonstrated on the processing of the ortopantomograms taken before and after treatment. The accuracy of the performance has been discussed and the possible origins of tool performance errors have been explained. The results obtained using presented tool have been discussed by an expert. The expert has confirmed that the tool is well suited for comparison and evaluation of ortopantomograms. The expert has come to the conclusion that our tool can be useful in other specializations of dentistry, not only in orthodontics. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, a complete architecture of the software defined radio receiver is proposed. First, a precise definition and the discussion of the problem is given. Next, an outline of the system topology is proposed, together with the requirements for each component of the system. Finally, a custom implementation is presented, including specifications, design considerations, and simulations.

The aim of this work is to yield a procedure for predicting expectation and covariance of power delivered by a generally tilted photovoltaic panel, based on available expectations and covariances of incident weather forecast data. The procedure consists of several steps: (i) neural-network-based identification of direct and diffuse solar irradiance models as static functions of available meteorological data; (ii) implementing the model of overall solar irradiance received on a tilted surface; (iii) determination and implementation of a thermal model of a photovoltaic panel, and (iv) implementing the unscented transformation to compute expectation and covariance of a stochastic variable after passing through a nonlinear mapping. Obtained simulation results present usefulness of the approach which is to be used within predictive control strategies of electrical storages in a microgrid with photovoltaic panels, that will optimize a combination of technical and economical criteria of the microgrid operation.

Emergence of Web 2.0 technologies became a trigger for a revolution that goes far beyond the Web. For an average student Web was transformed from a steady, accessible source of information into a place of action and viable exchange of knowledge - a kind of a virtual classroom. Students started to look for experience and a touch to reality online, and this is where remote laboratories come in place. Such laboratories became an inevitable need in electrical and computer engineering courses dealing with microcomputers. This paper presents an overview of available architectures of microcomputer laboratories used today and addresses their most important limitations. Moreover, an important extension of such architecture is proposed allowing support for remote Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) laboratory. Different aspects of compatibility between microcomputer laboratories and WSNs have been examined to allow creation of an general extension model. With additional effort and adaptation, WSN nodes may serve remote clients as an economic and accessible microcomputer laboratory providing invaluable hands-on experience and a motivation for a course using it.

Recent increases in railway patronage worldwide have created pressure on rolling stock and railway infrastructure through the demand to improve the capacity and punctuality of the whole system, and this demand must also be balanced with reducing life-cycle costs. Condition monitoring is seen as a significant contributor in achieving this. The emphasis of this article is on the use of sensors mounted on rolling stock to monitor the condition of infrastructure and the rolling stock itself. This is set in the context of modern rolling stock being fitted with high-capacity communication buses and multiple sensors, resulting in the potential for advanced processing of collected data. This article brings together linked research that uses a similar set of rolling stock sensors, and discusses: general usage and benefits, a track defect detection method, running gear condition monitoring, and absolute train speed detection.

Protein subcellular localization aims at predicting the location of a protein within a cell using computational methods. Knowledge of subcellular localization of proteins indicates protein functions and helps in identifying drug targets. Prediction of protein subcellular localization is an important but challenging problem, particularly when proteins may simultaneously exist at, or move between, two or more different subcellular location sites. Most of the existing protein subcellular localization methods are only used to deal with the single-location proteins. To better reflect the characteristics of multiplex proteins, we formulate prediction of subcellular localization of multiplex proteins as a multi-label learning problem. We present and compare two multi-label learning approaches, which exploit correlations between labels and leverage label-specific features, respectively, to induce a high quality prediction model. Experimental results on six protein data sets under various organisms show that our described methods achieve significantly higher performance than any of the existing methods. Among the different multi-label learning methods, we find that methods exploiting label correlations performs better than those leveraging label-specific features.

In this paper, we study the global robust output regulation problem for a class of multivariable nonlinear systems. The problem is first converted into a stabilization problem of an augmented system composed of the original plant and an internal model. The augmented system is a two-input system containing both dynamic uncertainty and time-varying static uncertainty. By decomposing the two-input control problem into two single-input control problems, we can solve the problem via a recursive approach utilizing the changing supply function technique. Finally, the theoretical result is applied to the speed tracking control and load torque disturbance rejection problem of a surface-mounted PM synchronous motor.

Tangentially-fired furnaces (TFF) are vortex-combustion units and are widely used in steam generators of thermal power plants. Perfect modeling and simulation of furnace gas temperature is quite difficult, due to its complex aerodynamics of burning particles, flame stability and hot gas flow distribution throughout the furnace. The temperature of the furnace gas depends on many parameters such as the inclination angle (tilt angle), fuel quality, burn out percentage and the flow rates in the burners for each of the furnace corners. However, the measurements are not available in the existing furnace operated at Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), Neyveli. Thus, state estimation of temperature is an important prerequisite for safe and economical process operations. It is an integral part of applications such as process monitoring, fault detection and diagnosis, process optimization, and model-based control. Because all the process variables are generally not measured, an observer can be designed to generate an estimate of the state by making use of the relevant process inputs, outputs, and process knowledge, in the form of a mathematical model. The aim is to design a good state estimator for the furnace. Linear Kalman Filter (LKF) and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithms are developed for this problem and simulation results are compared.
