Deterministic replay of a parallel application is commonly used for discovering bugs or to recover from a hard fault with message-logging fault tolerance. For message passing programs, a major source of overhead during forward execution is recording the order in which messages are sent and received. During replay, this ordering must be used to deterministically reproduce the execution. Previous work in replay algorithms often makes minimal assumptions about the programming model and application to maintain generality. However, in many applications, only a partial order must be recorded due to determinism intrinsic in the program, ordering constraints imposed by the execution model, and events that are commutative (their relative execution order during replay does not need to be reproduced exactly). In this paper, we present a novel algebraic framework for reasoning about the minimum dependencies required to represent the partial order for different orderings and interleavings. By exploiting this framework, we improve on an existing scalable message-logging fault tolerance scheme that uses a total order. The improved scheme scales to 131,072 cores on an IBM BlueGene/P with up to 2× lower overhead.

The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) Collaboration has recently released a catalog of 360 sources detected above 50 GeV (2FHL). This catalog was obtained using 80 months of data re-processed with Pass 8, the newest event-level analysis, which significantly improves the acceptance and angular resolution of the instrument. Most of the 2FHL sources at high Galactic latitude are blazars. Using detailed Monte Carlo simulations, we measure, for the first time, the source count distribution, dN/dS, of extragalactic γ-ray sources at E>50 GeV and find that it is compatible with a Euclidean distribution down to the lowest measured source flux in the 2FHL (∼8×10−12 ph cm−2 s−1). We employ a one-point photon fluctuation analysis to constrain the behavior of dN/dS below the source detection threshold. Overall, the source count distribution is constrained over three decades in flux and found compatible with a broken power law with a break flux, Sb, in the range [8×10−12,1.5×10−11] ph cm−2 s−1 and power-law indices below and above the break of α2∈[1.60,1.75] and α1=2.49±0.12, respectively. Integration of dN/dS shows that point sources account for at least 86−14+16% of the total extragalactic γ-ray background. The simple form of the derived source count distribution is consistent with a single population (i.e., blazars) dominating the source counts to the minimum flux explored by this analysis. We estimate the density of sources detectable in blind surveys that will be performed in the coming years by the Cherenkov Telescope Array.

We report on the search for spectral irregularities induced by oscillations between photons and axionlike-particles (ALPs) in the γ-ray spectrum of NGC 1275, the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster. Using 6 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data, we find no evidence for ALPs and exclude couplings above 5×10−12 GeV−1 for ALP masses 0.5≲ma≲5 neV at 95% confidence. The limits are competitive with the sensitivity of planned laboratory experiments, and, together with other bounds, strongly constrain the possibility that ALPs can reduce the γ-ray opacity of the Universe.

e-ASTROGAM ('enhanced ASTROGAM') is a breakthrough Observatory space mission, with a detector composed by a Silicon tracker, a calorimeter, and an anticoincidence system, dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.3 MeV to 3 GeV - the lower energy limit can be pushed to energies as low as 150 keV for the tracker, and to 30 keV for calorimetric detection. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the most powerful Galactic and extragalactic sources, elucidating the nature of their relativistic outflows and their effects on the surroundings. With a line sensitivity in the MeV energy range one to two orders of magnitude better than previous generation instruments, e-ASTROGAM will determine the origin of key isotopes fundamental for the understanding of supernova explosion and the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. The mission will provide unique data of significant interest to a broad astronomical community, complementary to powerful observatories such as LIGO-Virgo-GEO600-KAGRA, SKA, ALMA, E-ELT, TMT, LSST, JWST, Athena, CTA, IceCube, KM3NeT, and LISA. Appearance-order-based schema matching

Schema matching is widely used in many applications, such as data integration, ontology merging, data warehouse and dataspaces. In this paper, we propose a novel matching technique that is based on the order of attributes appearing in the schema structure of query results. The appearance order embodies the extent of the importance of an attribute for the user examining the query results. The core idea of our approach is to collect statistics about the appearance order of attributes from the query logs, to find correspondences between attributes in the schemas to be matched. As a first step, we employ a matrix to structure the statistics around the appearance order of attributes. Then, two scoring functions are considered to measure the similarity of the collected statistics. Finally, a traditional algorithm is employed to find the mapping with the highest score. Furthermore, our approach can be seen as a complementary member to the family of the existing matchers, and can also be combined with them to obtain more accurate results. We validate our approach with an experimental study, the results of which demonstrate that our approach is effective, and has good performance. © 2014. We have measured the gamma-ray emission spectrum of the Moon using the data collected by the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi satellite during its first seven years of operation, in the energy range from 30 MeV up to a few GeV. We have also studied the time evolution of the flux, finding a correlation with the solar activity. We have developed a full Monte Carlo simulation describing the interactions of cosmic rays with the lunar surface. The results of the present analysis can be explained in the framework of this model, where the production of gamma rays is due to the interactions of cosmic-ray proton and helium nuclei with the surface of the Moon. Finally, we have used our simulation to derive the cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra near Earth from the Moon gamma-ray data.

Cloud computing is still an emerging field experiencing rapid advancement in both industry and academia. Cloud computing has solved many problems initially faced by internet application developers such as acquisition of a server with a fixed capacity to handle expected peak application demand which led to under-utilization of provisioned resources, by enabling a new consumption and delivery model for IT services. It involves provisioning of dynamically scalable and virtualized resources as a service over the Internet. Evaluation of algorithms and policies in an exhaustive manner directly on a cloud is infeasible as it involves a lot of time and effort. Moreover, utilization of real cloud infrastructure limits the experiment to the scale of the infrastructure. A desirable alternative would be utilization of simulation tools that enables evaluation of a hypothesis in a repeatable, controlled and timely manner prior to software development in a cloud environment. Taking into consideration these issues and the ever-growing popularity of OpenStack, in this paper we propose OpenSim a simulator of OpenStack services. It has been developed by the authors of this paper with the intention of simulating new algorithms and also to enable a user to study the behavior of an application running under various deployment configuration in an OpenStack environment.

Hybrid clouds are increasingly becoming important in cloud computing. We see a rapid raise in the demand for a secure infrastructure that would enable sharing of computing resources between multiple hybrid cloud deployments to facilitate accommodation of situations where the demand outstrips supply, load balancing, and other such infrastructure constraints. From the end user perspective, this would also mean that the end users can host applications with their choice of federated cloud provider, as opposed to choosing from a host of global cloud providers on the market. The following paper describes a federated infrastructure for hybrid clouds, in particular, Openstack. © 2013 Infonomics Society.
