Modern healthcare often utilises radiographic images alongside textual reports for diagnostics, encouraging the use of Vision-Language Self-Supervised Learning (VL-SSL) with large pre-trained models to learn versatile medical vision representations. However, most existing VL-SSL frameworks are trained end-to-end, which is computation-heavy and can lose vital prior information embedded in pre-trained encoders. To address both issues, we introduce the backbone-agnostic Adaptor framework, which preserves medical knowledge in pre-trained image and text encoders by keeping them frozen, and employs a lightweight Adaptor module for cross-modal learning. Experiments on medical image classification and segmentation tasks across three datasets reveal that our framework delivers competitive performance while cutting trainable parameters by over 90% compared to current pre-training approaches. Notably, when fine-tuned with just 1% of data, Adaptor outperforms several Transformer-based methods trained on full datasets in medical image segmentation.

Agriculture is the backbone of India's economy, supporting a large portion of the population and establishing the country as a key global player in food production. India ranks as the second-largest producer of both paddy and wheat. However, agricultural productivity is highly susceptible to various plant diseases, which can significantly reduce crop yields and quality. Paddy, one of the most important staple crops, is particularly vulnerable to diseases caused mainly by viral and bacterial related diseases. The climate conditions are also play a vital role in paddy plant diseases. This research work proposes a deep learning-based approach for early detection and classification of paddy diseases. The proposed research devises a hybrid model that combines the VGG19 and ResNet50 algorithms, the system analyses images of both healthy and disease-affected paddy leaves, sourced from the Kaggle repository. This research focuses on predicting four major paddy diseases that can cause yield losses of up to 80%, and in severe cases, can destroy an entire crop: (i) Paddy Blast, (ii) Bacterial Leaf Blight, (iii) Sheath Blight, and (iv) Ufra Disease. The proposed model achieves a high accuracy rate of 98% in predicting paddy diseases and offers a rapid classification process, showcasing the potential of advanced image processing and deep learning techniques to mitigate the impact of paddy plant diseases on agricultural productivity. © 2024 IEEE.

Efficient tensor networks for control-enhanced quantum metrology

Optimized quantum control can enhance the performance and noise resilience of quantum metrology. However, the optimization quickly becomes intractable when multiple control operations are applied sequentially. In this work, we propose efficient tensor network algorithms for optimizing strategies of quantum metrology enhanced by a long sequence of control operations. Our approach covers a general and practical scenario where the experimenter applies N−1 interleaved control operations between N queries of the channel to estimate and uses no or bounded ancilla. Tailored to different experimental capabilities, these control operations can be generic quantum channels or variational unitary gates. Numerical experiments show that our algorithm has a good performance in optimizing the metrological strategy for as many as N = 100 queries. In particular, our algorithm identifies a strategy that can outperform the state-of-the-art strategy when N is finite but large. © 2024, CC BY.

In recent years, Pretraining Language Models based on Transformers -Natural Language Processing (PLMT-NLP) have been highly successful in nearly every NLP task. In the beginning, Generative Pre-trained model-based Transformer, BERT- Bidirectional Encoder model Representations using Transformers was used to develop these models. Models constructed on transformers, Self-supervise knowledge acquiring, and transfer learning establish the foundation of these designs. Transformed-based pre-trained models acquire common linguistic illustrations from vast amounts of textual information through self-supervised model and apply this information to downstream tasks. To eliminate the need to retrain downstream models, these models provide a solid foundation of knowledge. In this paper, the enhanced learning on PLMT-NLP has been discussed. Initially, a quick introduction to self-supervised learning is presented, then diverse core concepts used in PLMT-NLP are explained. Furthermore, a list of relevant libraries for working with PLMT-NLP has been provided. Lastly, the paper discusses about the upcoming research directions that will further improve these models. Because of its thoroughness and relevance to current PLMT-NLP developments, this survey study will positively serve as a valuable resource for those seeking to understand both basic ideas and new developments better. © 2022 IEEE.

Stroke is one dangerous illness that kills people. Stroke is so called because of the way it strikes people down. Across the globe, it is among the main causes of mortality and disability. It requires early identification and precise measures to be taken in order to prevent stroke and further damages to the brain and other parts of body. Our study investigates the use of machine learning techniques that includes Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Free Classifier, Random Forest Classifier, Naive Bares and multiple Boosting Classifiers. The “Healthcare dataset Stroke data” is the dataset used, which is preprocessed and then trained upon by Ml. models. For Random Forest Classifier, the maximum accuracy observed was 94.91%, and upon Hyper parameter Tuning- there was rise in accuracy to 95.64%, Evaluation criteria like F1-score, precision, and recall provides additional evidence for the effectiveness of these models: Further in order to explain how each feature contributes differently to each prediction we have made use of two popular techniques for XAT, LIME and SHAP. LIVE and SHIP provides local, interpretable explanations and global explanations respectively.

Generative AI for synthetic data across multiple medical modalities: A systematic review of recent developments and challenges

This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review of generative models (GANs, VAEs, DMs, and LLMs) used to synthesize various medical data types, including imaging (dermoscopic, mammographic, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and X-ray), text, time-series, and tabular data (EHR). Unlike previous narrowly focused reviews, our study encompasses a broad array of medical data modalities and explores various generative models. Our aim is to offer insights into their current and future applications in medical research, particularly in the context of synthesis applications, generation techniques, and evaluation methods, as well as providing a GitHub repository as a dynamic resource for ongoing collaboration and innovation. Our search strategy queries databases such as Scopus, PubMed, and ArXiv, focusing on recent works from January 2021 to November 2023, excluding reviews and perspectives. This period emphasizes recent advancements beyond GANs, which have been extensively covered in previous reviews. The survey also emphasizes the aspect of conditional generation, which is not focused on in similar work. Key contributions include a broad, multi-modality scope that identifies cross-modality insights and opportunities unavailable in single-modality surveys. While core generative techniques are transferable, we find that synthesis methods often lack sufficient integration of patient-specific context, clinical knowledge, and modality-specific requirements tailored to the unique characteristics of medical data. Conditional models leveraging textual conditioning and multimodal synthesis remain underexplored but offer promising directions for innovation. Our findings are structured around three themes: (1) Synthesis applications, highlighting clinically valid synthesis applications and significant gaps in using synthetic data beyond augmentation, such as for validation and evaluation;(2) Generation techniques, identifying gaps in personalization and cross-modality innovation;and (3) Evalu

Concurrent B+trees have been widely used in many systems. With the scale of data requests increasing exponentially, the systems are facing tremendous performance pressure. GPU has shown its potential to accelerate concurrent B+trees performance. When many concurrent requests are processed, the conflicts should be detected and resolved. Prior methods guarantee the correctness of concurrent GPU B+trees through lock-based or software transactional memory (STM)-based approaches. However, these methods complicate the request processing logic, increase the number of memory accesses and bring execution path divergence. They lead to performance degradation and variance in response time increasing. Moreover, previous methods do not guarantee linearizability among concurrent requests. In this paper, we design a combined-based concurrency control framework, called Eirene, for GPU B+tree to reduce the overhead of conflict detection and resolution. First, a combining-based synchronization method is designed to combine and issue requests. It combines the requests with the same key, constructs their dependence, decides the issued request, and determines their return values. Since only one request for each key is issued, key conflicts are eliminated. Then, an optimistic STM method is used to reduce structure conflicts. The query and the update requests are partitioned into different kernels. For the update kernels, STM is involved only when the number of the retry reaches a threshold. Finally, a locality-aware warp reorganization optimization is proposed to improve memory behavior and reduce conflicts by exploiting the locality among requests. Evaluations on an NVIDIA A100 GPU show that Eirene is efficient (a throughput of 2.4 billion per second) and can guarantee linearizability. Compared to the state-of-the-art GPU B+tree, it can achieve a speedup of 7.43X and reduce the response time variance from 36% to 5%. © 2023 ACM.

Fetal weight estimation during pregnancy is critical for monitoring growth and planning delivery, yet current ultrasound-based estimations are prone to error. This study leveraged open access ultrasound images and simulated clinical data to develop a deep learning pipeline for fetal weight prediction. The dataset consisted of n=1,570 ultrasound images from 333 pregnant individuals at 18-40 weeks' gestation. Relevant maternal and fetal attributes like body mass index, gestational age, amniotic fluid index, and newborn birth weight were simulated based on population averages. A convolutional neural network (CNN) using transfer learning was applied to extract imaging features. The pre-Trained Xception model was adapted by adding a global average pooling layer and freezing layers during feature extraction. Extracted imaging features were combined with clinical metadata and input into linear regression and random forest models. Hyperparameter tuning via randomized search identified a random forest configuration minimizing error. On a 20% test set, the pipeline achieved a mean absolute error of 328.6 grams in predicting birth weight, suggesting feasibility of the approach. While clinical conclusions are limited without real-world data, this study demonstrates a pipeline leveraging open science resources to address an important maternal-fetal health problem. Tailored CNN architectures and further model optimization on population-representative data could enhance performance and clinical utility. This work highlights the potential of open datasets to enable rapid scientific progress and proposes a deep learning methodology for improved fetal weight assessment during pregnancy. © 2023 IEEE.

Heisenberg-Limited Quantum Metrology without Ancilla

Extensive research has been dedicated to the asymptotic theory of quantum metrology, where the goal is to determine the ultimate precision limit of quantum channel estimation when many accesses to the channel are allowed. The ultimate limit has been well established, but in general noiseless and controllable ancilla is required for attaining it. Little is known about the metrological performance without noiseless ancilla, which is more relevant in practical circumstances. In this work, we present a novel theoretical framework to address this problem, bridging quantum metrology and the asymptotic theory of quantum channels. Leveraging this framework, we prove sufficient conditions for achieving the Heisenberg limit with repeated applications of the channel to estimate, both with and without applying interleaved unitary control operations. For the latter case, we design an algorithm to identify explicitly the control operation. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
