Aspect-based sentiment analysis in MOOCs: a systematic literature review introducing the MASC-MEF framework

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) in massive open online courses (MOOCs) offers a powerful tool to understand student experiences and improve the quality of online education. As MOOCs grow in popularity, there is an increasing need to analyze student feedback at a granular level, focusing on specific course aspects rather than just overall sentiment. Despite ABSA’s potential in MOOCs, research in this specific domain remains limited. Thus, this review of the literature seeks to fill this gap by systematically examining ABSA within the realm of MOOCs. We utilized a PRISMA framework to guide the search process. Consequently, this review covered 57 studies conducted between 2019 and 2024, retrieved from eight electronic research databases. The studies included in this analysis were examined on the basis of their datasets, data preprocessing, ABSA tasks in MOOCs, evaluation aspects in online courses, fusion approach in ABSA, techniques of word representations, and evaluation criteria utilized to evaluate the proposed models. Additionally, this review introduces the multiaspect sentiment classification using multiembedding and fusion (MASC-MEF) framework, a novel approach that uniquely incorporates multiword embeddings and multifeature extraction along with advanced classification techniques. Results shed light on several critical issues and various limitations, pointing towards future directions for ABSA research within the realm of MOOCs. This review underscores significant contributions to improving ABSA in educational technology, with a focus on course effectiveness and advancements in online learning, guiding researchers towards innovative techniques to tackle this challenge in the future. © The Author(s) 2025.

Efficient management of resources such as CPU, RAM, and disk storage is a critical challenge for object detection systems that rely on multi-camera video streaming, especially for resource-constrained devices. These constraints frequently result in the risk of overheating and potential system failure during high workloads. This paper presents a novel Resource-Aware Framework (RA-Framework), designed to optimize resource allocation using dynamic adaptation mechanisms. The RA-Framework dynamically manages CPU, RAM, and disk storage resources for YOLO-based object detection, supporting multiple camera streams and scheduling mechanisms. The framework was implemented in resource-constrained environments using various YOLO models with single and dual-camera setups. Experimental results showed that the RA-Framework successfully reduced average CPU usage by up to 68.62%, decreased RAM consumption by approximately 13.47%, and extended the time for disk usage to increase by 1% by more than 500% in specific scenarios. In contrast, systems without the RA-Framework experienced higher resource utilization and greater susceptibility to resource scarcity or even overheating. © 2013 IEEE.

Addressing Imbalance in Health Datasets: A New Method NR-Clustering SMOTE and Distance Metric Modification

An imbalanced dataset often challenges machine learning, particularly classification methods. Underrepresented minority classes can result in biased and inaccurate models. The Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) was developed to address the problem of imbalanced data. Over time, several weaknesses of the SMOTE method have been identified in generating synthetic minority class data, such as overlapping, noise, and small disjuncts. However, these studies generally focus on only one of SMOTE’s weaknesses: noise or overlapping. Therefore, this study addresses both issues simultaneously by tackling noise and overlapping in SMOTE-generated data. This study proposes a combined approach of filtering, clustering, and distance modification to reduce noise and overlapping produced by SMOTE. Filtering removes minority class data (noise) located in majority class regions, with the k-nn method applied for filtering. The use of Noise Reduction (NR), which removes data that is considered noise before applying SMOTE, has a positive impact in overcoming data imbalance. Clustering establishes decision boundaries by partitioning data into clusters, allowing SMOTE with modified distance metrics to generate minority class data within each cluster. This SMOTE clustering and distance modification approach aims to minimize overlap in synthetic minority data that could introduce noise. The proposed method is called “NR-Clustering SMOTE,” which has several stages in balancing data: (1) filtering by removing minority classes close to majority classes (data noise) using the k-nn method;(2) clustering data using K-means aims to establish decision boundaries by partitioning data into several clusters;(3) applying SMOTE oversampling with Manhattan distance within each cluster. Bias analysis of AI models for undergraduate student admissions

Bias detection and mitigation is an active area of research in machine learning. This work extends previous research done by the authors Van Busum and Fang (Proceedings of the 38th ACM/SIGAPP Symposium on Applied computing, 2023) to provide a rigorous and more complete analysis of the bias found in AI predictive models. Admissions data spanning six years was used to create an AI model to determine whether a given student would be directly admitted into the School of Science under various scenarios at a large urban research university. During this time, submission of standardized test scores as part of a student’s application became optional which led to interesting questions about the impact of standardized test scores on admission decisions. We developed and analyzed AI models to understand which variables are important in admissions decisions, and how the decision to exclude test scores affects the demographics of the students who are admitted. We then evaluated the predictive models to detect and analyze biases these models may carry with respect to three variables chosen to represent sensitive populations: gender, race, and whether a student was the first in his/her family to attend college. We also extended our analysis to show that the biases detected were persistent. Finally, we included several fairness metrics in our analysis and discussed the uses and limitations of these metrics. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Distribution-flexible subset quantization for post-quantizing super-resolution networks

This paper introduces distribution-flexible subset quantization(DFSQ), a post-training quantization method for super-resolution networks. Our motivation for developing DFSQ is based on the distinctive activation distributions of current super-resolution models, which exhibit significant variance across samples and channels. To address this issue, DFSQ conducts channel-wise normalization of the activations and applies distribution-flexible subset quantization(SQ), wherein the quantization points are selected from a universal set consisting of multi-word additive log-scale values. To expedite the selection of quantization points in SQ, we propose a fast quantization points selection strategy that uses K-means clustering to select the quantization points closest to the centroids. Compared to the common iterative exhaustive search algorithm, our strategy avoids the enumeration of all possible combinations in the universal set, reducing the time complexity from exponential to linear. Consequently, the constraint of time costs on the size of the universal set is greatly relaxed. Extensive evaluations of various super-resolution models show that DFSQ effectively improves performance even without fine-tuning. For example, for 4-bit EDSR×2 on the Urban benchmark, DFSQ obtains 0.242 dB PSNR gains.

Pretrained transformer-based Language Models (LMs) are well-known for their ability to achieve significant improvement on text classification tasks with their powerful word embeddings, but their black-box nature, which leads to a lack of interpretability, has been a major concern. In this work, we introduce GAProtoNet, a novel white-box Multi-head Graph Attention-based Prototypical Network designed to explain the decisions of text classification models built with LM encoders. In our approach, the input vector and prototypes are regarded as nodes within a graph, and we utilize multi-head graph attention to selectively construct edges between the input node and prototype nodes to learn an interpretable prototypical representation. During inference, the model makes decisions based on a linear combination of activated prototypes weighted by the attention score assigned for each prototype, allowing its choices to be transparently explained by the attention weights and the prototypes. Experiments on multiple public datasets show our approach achieves superior results without sacrificing the accuracy of the original black-box LMs. We also compare with four alternative prototypical network variations and our approach achieves the best accuracy and F1 among all. Our case study and visualization of prototype clusters also demonstrate the efficiency in explaining the decisions of black-box models built with LMs. Our codes are available at https://***/ximingwen/GAProtoNet. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Omnidirectional, 360∘ or spherical images are signals defined on the sphere surface that capture the entire field of view. High-resolution 360∘ images are applicable in virtual reality and require efficient compression. Spherical images are commonly mapped to the plane using the equirectangular projection, which suffers from latitude-dependent distortions. Existing 360∘ image block-based compression methods introduce blocking artifacts, degrading image quality, or face design issues that might turn their usage impractical. This paper proposes a new content-guided compression method designed for spherical images that uses spherical superpixels as coding units. The proposed method applies a spherically-weighted graph Fourier transform and a latitude-adaptive quantization scheme to each superpixel. The proposed approach enables state-of-the-art compression ratios with results up to 3.66dB in image quality and -55% of bit rate regarding other recent coding unit-based 360∘ image compression techniques. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

After learning the basic features of a programming language, such as expressions and control statements, novice programmers need to combine these features to solve programming questions. Some of these combined code snippets are reusable constructs useful to solve future questions. They are referred to as plans, schemas, or patterns in the literature. An example of such a pattern is determining the equality of three values using the ‘equal and logical and operators. Previous research has investigated the acquisition of these patterns by observing and interviewing novice programmers as they solve programming problems. In this paper, we test the hypothesis that students tend to reuse acquired patterns to solve subsequent problems by analyzing a computer science education dataset called CodeWorkout, which contains students’ code submissions for introductory-level programming questions. We employed directed labeled tree to represent the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) of the submitted code and the patterns. To search for a pattern, we first applied the subgraph isomorphism algorithm VF2 with wildcard node labels to identify candidate matches, followed by enforcing the proper ordering of descendant nodes between the pattern and the candidate matches. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach effectively identifies common usage of patterns. Moreover, the findings indicate that if a student employs a pattern in one question, they are likely to reuse the same pattern in a subsequent question. This paper also reveals that when multiple alternative patterns exist for the same function, students tend to maintain their preference for a particular alternative while solving different questions. Sobol Sequence Optimization for Hardware-Efficient Vector Symbolic Architectures

Hyperdimensional computing (HDC) is an emerging computing paradigm with significant promise for efficient and robust learning. In HDC, objects are encoded with high-dimensional vector symbolic sequences called hypervectors. The quality of hypervectors, defined by their distribution and independence, directly impacts the performance of HDC systems. Despite a large body of work on the processing parts of HDC systems, little to no attention has been paid to data encoding and the quality of hypervectors. Most prior studies have generated hypervectors using inherent random functions, such as MATLAB’s or Python’s random function. This work introduces an optimization technique for generating hypervectors by employing quasi-random sequences. These sequences have recently demonstrated their effectiveness in achieving accurate and low-discrepancy data encoding in stochastic computing systems. The study outlines the optimization steps for utilizing Sobol sequences to produce high-quality hypervectors in HDC systems. An optimization algorithm is proposed to select the most suitable Sobol sequences via indexes for generating minimally correlated hypervectors, particularly in applications related to symbol-oriented architectures. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated in comparison to two traditional approaches of generating hypervectors based on linear-feedback shift registers and MATLAB random functions. The evaluation is conducted for three applications: 1) language;2) headline;and 3) medical image classification. Our experimental results demonstrate accuracy improvements of up to 10.79%, depending on the vector size. Additionally, the proposed encoding hardware exhibits reduced energy consumption and a superior area-delay product. © 2024 IEEE.
