The ability to recognise and interpret emotional expressions is crucial since emotions play a significant role in our daily lives. Emotions are multifaceted phenomena that affect our behavior, perception, and cognition. As a result, numerous machine-learning and deep-learning algorithms for emotion analysis have been studied in previous works. Finding emotion in an obscured face, such as one covered by a scarf or hidden in shadow, is considerably harder than in a complete face, though. This study explores the effectiveness of deep learning models in occluded facial emotion analysis through a transfer learning approach. The performance of two individual pre-trained models, MobileNetV2 and EfficientNetB3, is compared alongside a hybrid model that combines both approaches. This comparison is conducted using the FER-2013 dataset. The dataset consists of 35,887 images and categorizes emotions into seven emotional categories. The results indicate that the hybrid model attained the highest accuracy, with a score of 93.04% for faces occluded at the top and 92.63% for faces occluded at the bottom. Additionally, the study suggests that top-occluded faces displayed more pronounced emotional expressions in comparison to bottom-occluded faces. Overall, these findings imply that hybrid architecture, which was developed as a state-of-the-art model in the study, proves to be effective for analyzing emotions in facial expressions that are partially obscured. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Feature selection is one of the most important components of many machine learning applications. Most of the existing sparse coding-based methods only concerned with the regularization of the transformation matrix, but ignoring the sparsity of projected features in the intrinsic feature space. In this paper, we introduce a novel regularization with 12-norm, called class specificity distribution term. It aims to ensure that samples with the same label could obey a specific distribution, while data from the different categories should have different distributions in the intrinsic feature space. Then we propose a novel embedded feature selection framework based on regression and class specificity distribution term measured by 12-norm, termed RL12. An efficient augmented Lagrange multipliers based optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the 12-norm regularization iteratively. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. © 2023 IEEE.

Edge computing is a new technology that enables 6G development by bringing cloud capabilities closer to end users to overcome traditional cloud flaws such as high latency and a lack of security. Few studies identify recent advances, challenges, and opportunities in 6G edge computing. As a result, this paper presents a review to identify recent advances in edge computing in 6G. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities of such new trends in the computing landscape. The paper identifies challenges (security and privacy, offloading and task division, bandwidth, service management, advanced communication, general-purpose computing on edge nodes, quantum computing and edge computing, and IoT heterogeneous platforms) as well as opportunities (academic-industry collaborations, algorithms and libraries that are lightweight and virtualization and micro-operating systems). Finally, some conclusions have been drawn after identifying current research directions. © 2022 IEEE.

This research was conducted to develop a mobile application that provides expert solutions for the common problems faced by rubber planters in Sri Lanka. The application developed consists of four components, namely, identification of pests in immature rubber plantations and rubber nurseries;leaf disease identification;cover crop identification;and weed identification. Images taken using the mobile phone cameras are recognized using machine learning models developed using several convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures such as mobile net version 2 (MobileNet v2), VGG 16, VGG19, and residual networks (ResNet). After the images were recognized, the application will provide expert solutions and management strategies to the rubber planters. As most of the rubber plantations are located in areas with low network coverage, the application was designed to be operated in offline mode using TensorFlow lite technology. © 2022 IEEE.

State of the Practice for Medical Imaging software

We present the state of the practice for Medical Imaging (MI) software. We selected 29 medical imaging projects from 48 candidates, assessed 10 software qualities (installability, correctness/verifiability, reliability, robustness, usability, maintainability, reusability, understandability, visibility/transparency and reproducibility) by answering 108 questions for each software project, and interviewed 8 of the 29 development teams. Based on the quantitative data for the first 9 qualities, we ranked the MI software with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The four top ranked software products are: 3D Slicer, ImageJ, Fiji, and OHIF Viewer. Our ranking is mostly consistent with the community’s ranking, with four of our top five projects also appearing in the top five of a list ordered by stars-per-year. Generally, MI software is in a healthy state as shown by the following: in the repositories we observed 88% of the documentation artifacts recommended by research software development guidelines, 100% of MI projects use version control tools, and developers appear to use the common quasi-agile research software development process. However, the current state of the practice deviates from the existing guidelines because of the rarity of some recommended artifacts (like test plans, requirements specification, code of conduct, code style guidelines, product roadmaps, and Application Program Interface (API) documentation), low usage of continuous integration (17% of the projects), low use of unit testing (about 50% of projects), and room for improvement with documentation (six of nine developers felt their documentation wasn’t clear enough). From interviewing the developers, we identified five pain points and two qualities of potential concern: lack of development time, lack of funding, technology hurdles, ensuring correctness, usability, maintainability, and reproducibility. Requirement elicitation (RE) is a cognitively challenging and time-consuming task in software development due to the numerous challenges associated with it including conflicting requirements, unspoken, or assumed requirements, difficulty meeting with relevant stakeholders, stakeholder resistance to change, and not enough time set aside for meetings with all stakeholders. The prime causes of software implementation failure have been identified as inadequacies in the treatment of requirements. Without collecting the quality requirement, cannot achieve the goal of a quality software product. Through identifying the success factors affecting requirement elicitation, the paths to the quality requirements can be identified. The success factors identify through this research are experience, business analyst skills, stakeholder relationship, organizational elicitation process. This study aims to identify the factors affecting requirement elicitation based on the data collected from business analysts and similar positions in the software industry through a survey, interviews, and analyzed data to provide the initial validation for the identified factors. Through the analysis, we identified the main factors affecting successful requirement elicitation with a perfect significance value of less than 0.05 for all factors. © 2022 IEEE.

Refactoring is one of the most widely used techniques in practice to improve the quality of software, such as maintainability, testability, and understandability. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the effect of refactoring on security. The effect of refactoring on security is poorly understood and understudied. A limited number of studies provide the categorization of refactoring techniques based on their effect on quality attributes to assist developers in achieving their design objectives by selecting the most beneficial techniques and applying them at the right places with respect to specific software quality attributes. However, security was not considered in these studies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of refactoring techniques on security in terms of information hiding. The aforementioned objectives were achieved by conducting several steps starting with selecting suitable refactoring techniques, selecting five case studies, selecting security metrics, applying the refactoring techniques, and conducting multi-case analysis. Then, the chosen refactoring techniques were categorized based on their effect on security. The results of this study identify and analyze the effect of the refactoring techniques on security metrics and then propose a categorization of the refactoring techniques based on their effect on security metrics. The finding will help the developers select appropriate refactoring techniques to improve existing software security. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

The Learning management system(LMS)is now being used for uploading educational content in both distance and blended *** platform has two types of users:the educators who upload the content,and the students who have to access the *** students,usually rely on text notes or books and video tutorials while their exams are conducted with formal *** assessments and examination criteria are ineffective with restricted learning space which makes the student tend only to read the educational contents and videos instead of interactive *** aim is to design an interactive LMS and examination video-based interface to cater the issues of educators and *** is designed according to Human-computer interaction(HCI)principles to make the interactive User interface(UI)through User experience(UX).The interactive lectures in the form of annotated videos increase user engagement and improve the self-study context of users involved in *** interface design defines how the design will interact with users and how the interface exchanges *** findings show that interactive videos for LMS allow the users to have a more personalized learning experience by engaging in the educational *** result shows a highly personalized learning experience due to the interactive video and quiz within the video.

This paper introduces a new method for traffic anomaly identification within the Faster R-CNN framework by combining the DenseNet module with the region proposals (RPs) processing block. The suggested approach seeks to improve feature extraction and RP creation in aerial imagery or CCTV frames to get beyond the drawbacks of the current methods. Discriminative features are extracted through DenseNet, and the RPs block makes it easier to provide a wide range of accurate and varied area proposals. Contrast correction techniques are applied to overcome the difficulties presented by low-resolution and low-contrast images frequently seen in surveillance scenarios. Comparing experimental results to state-of-the-art techniques, one can observe notable resilience and detection accuracy increases. The suggested method works exceptionally well in various traffic scenarios and environmental circumstances, indicating its potential for practical implementation in traffic surveillance systems. Overall, the study contributes to advancing the efficacy and reliability of anomaly detection in urban traffic environments. © 2024 SPIE.
